Duke Homestead State Historic Site

This national historic landmark marks the spot where Washington Duke started his worldwide tobacco empire. After learning of the demand Union soldiers had for brightleaf tobacco during his service in the Civil War, Duke returned to the fledgling tobacco operation he had left behind, built a small factory, and began selling his product to the world.
