The main reason for the proprietary hardware that goes along with Microtech's warranty statement “that if you take apart the knife it voids the warranty” is to discourage people from taking the knives apart, then not being able to get it put back together properly. Over the years Microtech has received zip lock bags full of parts from people that have taken their knife apart, and were not "mechanically inclined" in getting it put back together properly, then they expect Microtech to put the knife back together under warranty (Free). Truth of the matter, if you are able to take apart your Microtech knife and get it put back together properly, it really doesn't void the warranty. Microtech is just covering their butt in their warranty for the people that expect Microtech to rebuild their knife from a zip lock bag full of parts for free.
i gifted an ultratech to my cousin since he liked mine so much and hes more mechanically inclined than probably 90% of us but hes up there. he started getting failure to open and close. luckily i was able to order the tool and i took it apart but one of the conical springs either got jammed up or came out of place and this was a brand new ultratech that had been fired and closed less than 100 times and not cut anything. for a $230 dollar knife in that case i just wish it came with the tool for disassembly. i had a cheap lightning otf which i played with off nutnfancys recommendation and decided i liked it enough to take the plunge into a microtech. my lightning would fail when i first got it so i took it apart easily and put it back together nice and tight and it hadnt failed to fire or retract after and i probably had over 500 fires and retractions on it before i gave it away
You sound just like that bastard at Mantis when I sent my Vuja De in because it blew up I my hands 10 min after receiving it. He told me he I tried to flip the belt clip when in fact he not once asked me if I was left handed. They didn't even fix my knife... They just sent me a different color without okaying it with me. Imagine the following conversation I had with *cough cough.. David after receiving something I didn't order. Now it's obvious if you take the microtech apart. It has many screws. The Mantis knife had 1 screw on the flip latch that has 2 parts. A male end and a female end... And if it's too tight the knife don't work. So they fall apart easily. But it's entirely my fault... I just won't never buy Mantis again
It actually doesn't void the warranty if you open the knife it only voids it if there is modifications. If you read the paperwork that come with microtefh knives they literally tell you that you can in fact open their knives you purchase
A most satisfying noise as the blade is deployed and retracted. The sort you only hope to hear in the parking garage if it's coming from your hand. Another must have on the always growing list.
I would like one of those some time. I've EDC'ed a microtech troodon with a drop point blade for almost a year. love it and hasn't failed me. And I flipped the clip around cause I'm lefty and have no problem. Awesome video guys!

Long story short, I just ordered one of these 85's in carbon fiber with the bronzed stonewash Elmax blade and bronze hardware. I am so stoked to get it. I've always heard great things about the Ultratechs and I figured if you're going to buy an OTF, you may as well get the one everyone says to get.

In Kansas, the knife laws were strange, but they were relaxed some. The only thing I may not carry are throwing stars; I am permitted to be a Mall Samurai, but not a Mall Ninja.
Frankie IS absolutely right about the buttons on the UTs...my 2014 is tougher than my 2016 and i have med to large hands that i use everyday working in construction related fields (so i'm like a real real man)..there were complaints about the spring tension of the 2014 batch knives ...my 2016 is a pleasure to operate..lighter spring plus better grip on the slide button equals :)
Microtech will do production runs on about 10 knives each year..according to their website postings and previous catalogues ..sometimes not every model is produced and put out for sale on its intended year
I've seen 5-lobed screws like that in automotive tools. I think I have a set somewhere. They're like Torx, but a special tamper-resistant deal. My Microtech Tachyon III has the same 3-sided tamper-resistant screws, but it did come with a tool for them. Not that I've had to tighten anything, because ball bearings don't tend to loosen much.
I know this is an old video and someone might have said this before but I honestly didn't want to scroll through all the comments looking for it. The reason it didn't pierce the skull is a safety feature that almost all, if not all, current OTFs have. Its because way back when there was a specific OTF that was strong enough to actually walk up to someone, pop the blade out and back in without anyone seeing you just stab the shit out of someone, and that knife would actually fully deploy into a person. I have seen old videos of people putting it up to a 2x4 and it sticking the blade in and pushing the persons hand back in the process.
I just bought a utx-85 brand new and I’ve barely used it but twice already it’s come off track by normally opening the blade. I’m I doing something wrong or is there some wrong with the knife?

13:53 I have that same one and it works great I have never had a problem with it. Just like yours mine snaps out with force too versus my red one with the belly switch that doesn't pop out as hard but still plenty hard enough the green one just pops out extra hard. They are keychain knives plain and simple just a little fidget toy that can cut letters open for you ect. They can crack easy too when you tighten them so just use thread locker and don't wrench it down.
I just got a UTX85, was rewatching this video, "if you see one in a color, or a 70 pick it up" , decide to go to Revolvers page and see what they got in stock.... one blue utx70.... I had to get it XD
With the we stars kind of makes sense because the star bits always strip when there is lock tight if you don't warm it up first because its usually heavy amounts of lock tight.

Yeah, real bummer. Green with bronze hardware and blade, beautiful knife dated 03/2017. I really don't want to return it but the reliability is questionable for me. I have tried to recreate the issue but it just seems random. The vendor suggested compressed air and/or oiling. Tried it, still having issues. Thanks for the reply, you guys are awesome!
I live in Colorado and as of August of 2017, any and every type of every knife other than ballistic will be legal. Any recommendations of a good OTF knife? Budget of around 200 here.
awesome news, obviously an 85 if you can score it but the ultimate entry level OTF is the chinese Lightning. That's what we started with anyway. The standard Ultratech's go for not much more than $200 as well
My city has a 2.5" blade limit, no autos..Around 2014 the city was in at least 3 different crime studies..It made top 12 most dangerous cities per capita in the country on every study..They fudged their stats after that..Plenty of stabbings. So, the 2.5" blade limit/no autos law is really working out well..It's also one of the hardest cities to get a gun permit. Sorry for my rant but it's ridiculous..
I have just purchased a UTX 85 from blade ops first time testing the knife the it deployed and retracted fine 5 times then the knife broke on me the switch just slides loosly and the blade is very loose it just slides back and forth is not connected something internal happed have you seen any problems with the UTX 85 microtech
I'm interested in a Microtech now.. Really much different knife, but have you guys checked out the Boker F3 Vox ? I just got one for $144. Probably cheaper on line. Its a thick handle knife and blade. Between a Medford and a Strider. Two thick titanium handle scales (comes in G10, carbon fiber too), Framelock, steel insert, over travel stop, thick blade of 3.5" S35VN, anodized blue clip and back spacer..It could be finished a little better (pivot and frame screws).. Not really my style but what a beast..And I mentioned it's thick and heavy (6.7 oz ?)... Worth checking out....
A Halo 5 will pierce when pushed up against the skin, it's actually true. It happened in the end of Bullet to the Head with Sylvestor Stalone, but it only works with single actions. Syl is actually a huge knife collector.

I ordered my ultratech in dagger but I kind of agree with you I like the semi drop point style blades. I did get it with the black stonewash though thankfully because a good stonewash really does make or break a blade. The blade on both sides with the silver in the center is just so overdone and every cheap knife has that design so I cant take it serious on an expensive knife. But something simple like a nice black stonewash really makes it. The knife goes from looking like some cheap tactical ninja mall knife to an elegant EDC. Not to mention the stonewash finish is typically a very strong finish versus a lot of others.
Yeah, sux being in Canada, lol that comb auto was the closest I'll ever get to owning an auto, haha... Funny enough, the dollar store used to sell those..

go easy on the tri-wing dome bit you bought...i got one from PVK to fix my Scarab and it served its purpose, i fixed my $450 OTF without sending it out..but one or two of the small tabs broke off shortly after...at $20-$30 a piece (2 years ago) that sucked...but if you can buy 2 of each bit you might need...and don't over tighten...hard not to do as a knife guy ..prices have come down and there are more places to buy these bits fro hat i've seen
Hey Frankie and bird a suggestion on some knives to look at for discreet carry or to put in keychains are opinel knives they are French made knives that's are extremely light and have decent edge retention and cost at most probably forty dollars
I've sharpened Ultratechs but not an 85 yet. If you are comfortable sharpening then there's no reason to be scared. Tape up the body of the knife to protect it
in California if any part of the knife is visible. So basically every pocket knife (What knife doesn't have a little handle above the clip) is considered open carry. but it's California so what isn't stupidly illegal.... I guess being stupidly scared, sensitive, and entitled is an exception.
My family has a cabin near Bradford Pennsylvania, I've been going into a store called sportsmans outlet for years... Ive only known of microtech for about a year and just find out the microtech manufacturing facility is connected to the store I've been going in for years. Just thought you'd find that interesting. I Also have a carbon fiber ultratech made in 2004.
I hate blade play in knifes but for some reason it doesn’t bother me with otf’s. I just know it’s part of the design and Ik that it won’t fail on me it just wobbles a little bit. Great vid!
I just picked one of these up last weekend. Have you had any issues with the blade not locking up when deployed? Mine doesn't lock about 15% of the time. The birthday of mine is 3/2017. Love your videos, btw!
Jason Randolph ordered one last Sunday, received on Wednesday. Started having the same problem Thursday. Same b-day as yours. Not impressed at all. Will most likely return to vendor.
Sorry to hear that guys, no issues with either one of ours. We have seen one Ultratech that had issues similar to that but different model and it was a '15
99% of the time if the blade is trying to deploy and retract but not locking up, it's due to a lack of lubrication. OTF knives are not maintenance free and require lubrication and cleaning to maintain operation. Can anyone let me know the name of the finish on the blade of that purple Ultratech? I have an Ultratech that has exactly the same blade(Bayonet, full black), but I can't tell whether it's DLC or something else.
That's a safety feature they started using back when autos were banned.. A true auto out the front without that safety feature is illegal anywhere in America if I remember correctly?.
There was a scene in the first IT movie remake. The bad kid I forget his name had an otf and (spoiler alert) he put the knife up to his fathers head and ejected the knife and it went straight through his head. Knowing how off knives worked I was really annoyed with the way the off was portrayed. Just a little rant.

Yo Bird: In 1977 I got a switchblade in Mexico for 5 bucks. It worked for at least two weeks before the scales fell off. Oh well. Last year I bought a 2"er from Blade HQ, which is legal in Commie-4-nia.

We have yet to see any non-locking issues. You can "induce" it sometimes if you shake your hand while trying to deploy it

Illegal in PA unfortunately. I can carry a full size glock with an extra mag open carry with no permit but cant have an auto knife. Ridiculous.

we've never had trouble with the larger ones like the Ultratech's or these 85's. We did have issues with the UTX-70's a while back.
Hey Frankie and bird a suggestion on some knives to look at for discreet carry or to put in keychains are opinel knives they are French made knives that's are extremely light and have decent edge retention and cost at most probably forty dollars
Opinel has been on our list for too long, we know we need to check them out

I've sharpened Ultratechs but not an 85 yet. If you are comfortable sharpening then there's no reason to be scared. Tape up the body of the knife to protect it
If you carry a knife using the pocket clip is that considered open carry?

in California if any part of the knife is visible. So basically every pocket knife (What knife doesn't have a little handle above the clip) is considered open carry. but it's California so what isn't stupidly illegal.... I guess being stupidly scared, sensitive, and entitled is an exception.

My family has a cabin near Bradford Pennsylvania, I've been going into a store called sportsmans outlet for years... Ive only known of microtech for about a year and just find out the microtech manufacturing facility is connected to the store I've been going in for years. Just thought you'd find that interesting. I Also have a carbon fiber ultratech made in 2004.

I hate blade play in knifes but for some reason it doesn’t bother me with otf’s. I just know it’s part of the design and Ik that it won’t fail on me it just wobbles a little bit. Great vid!

I just picked one of these up last weekend. Have you had any issues with the blade not locking up when deployed? Mine doesn't lock about 15% of the time. The birthday of mine is 3/2017.

Jason Randolph ordered one last Sunday, received on Wednesday. Started having the same problem Thursday. Same b-day as yours. Not impressed at all. Will most likely return to vendor.
Sorry to hear that guys, no issues with either one of ours. We have seen one Ultratech that had issues similar to that but different model and it was a '15
99% of the time if the blade is trying to deploy and retract but not locking up, it's due to a lack of lubrication. OTF knives are not maintenance free and require lubrication and cleaning to maintain operation. It's not lubed. Also... Cold weather will cause the oil to get more dense. Mine struggles at 6am... After that, good to go
Can anyone let me know the name of the finish on the blade of that purple Ultratech? I have an Ultratech that has exactly the same blade(Bayonet, full black), but I can't tell whether it's DLC or something else.
That's a safety feature they started using back when autos were banned.. A true auto out the front without that safety feature is illegal anywhere in America if I remember correctly?.
I have my Lighting which is a conversation piece, spending lots of money for a knife I can't carry in Pennsylvania doesn't make sense.

There was a scene in the first IT movie remake. The bad kid I forget his name had an otf and (spoiler alert) he put the knife up to his fathers head and ejected the knife and it went straight through his head. Knowing how off knives worked I was really annoyed with the way the off was portrayed. Just a little rant.

What issues did the 70 have?
a 2014 model blade got stuck in the closed position. Probably an easy fix but we weren't taking them apart back then
really regret my choice of going dagger edge for my ultratech. cool as it is, useful it aint!

Sadly illegal in Washington state. Also very spendy and I can't stand bladeplay, and that's kind of a given with otf knives.

Yo Bird: In 1977 I got a switchblade in Mexico for 5 bucks. It worked for at least two weeks before the scales fell off. Oh well. Last year I bought a 2"er from Blade HQ, which is legal in Commie-4-nia.
