It’s called, Cucuzza, I have been growing them many years. My Italian father grew them all the time. You should not let them get bigger than 2 1/2 to 3 feet, after that they are all seed and not as much flavor. If the seeds are large, they must be scraped out. The traditional Italian way of eating it is in a tomato gravy stew. Keep in mind that they produce a lot of juice. Here is a recipe that I put together that you may like. I put everything in the pot at one time and cook until the shrimp are done. RECIPE: 1 Cucuzza; 1 onion; 1 cup of celery; 1 can of Goya Coconut Milk,( must be thick), 1 - 4 oz. jar of red curry past; 4 lbs. shrimp; salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. If you need more juice, add a little chicken stock.
Just to clarify, this is not the recipe for the tomato gravy stew? I'm assuming since I didn't see any mention of tomatoes in the list of ingredients you gave (assuming has gotten me into trouble😅). But it sounds so delicious. 😋
In 2014 I had knee replacement, then infected and had revision surgery. I was on antibiotic IV for 6 weeks… long story short missed and entire garden season. I totally get it about how easy it is to take for granted the real joy we glean from our garden. Prayers for speedy and FULL recovery-get back to your happy place! 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
Glad you’re feeling better Jill , continue to take it easy and follow your doctor’s advice, Nate, you’re doing a great job looking after your lovely family, a proper man’s job sir . All the best Jules
Sweet Jill, so happy that you have turned the corner with your recovery. Prayer works. God bless may you continue to heal, remember please take it easy, tomorrow is another day
You have such a beautiful spirit. I’m so glad you were able to give your spirit a boost today. Walking in the garden is definitely an uplifting activity. Glad to see you smile. Still sending up prayers for you dear.
Jill I'm so thankful that you are doing better and that you get a chance to get out to your garden and see what's going on it's such a blessing everything works in its place and God has plans but sometimes you just need to stir down and take it easy 🙏💚😊
I live in late fall when you wake up and have clean crisp smell and feel first thing in the morning. You start the day in a sweater or sweatshirt and later just a tee only to have to put sweater back on in the evening. The harvest is putting itself to bed and in just a week or so it’s wintertime. You finally get time to slow a little and don’t forget to be thankful for what you’ve received in the fall. Don’t wait till Thanksgiving, be thankful all the way.
Hi Jill! My name is Jill too! I am so happy for you that you were able to get out a bit and feed your soul! Praying for you for a continued quick recovery.
A simple way to cook the cucuzza (gagootz) is to peel the skin off. Scrape out the large seeds and cut the squash into 1-2 in chunks. Sauté in olive oil and garlic and add tomato sauce, salt and pepper and italian basil. cook until tender. Eat as a side vegetable. Or make some pasta, usually elbows, and add the the tomato sauce squash mix. We grate cheese called ricotta salatta onto it. It is a soft , delicious grateable cheese, on the large side of your grater. Wish I had one of those right now! Continue to feel better Jill.
Sweet sweet girl. I bet you needed a good laydown after this. Right after my husband's surgery there was a big snow storm in Missouri, I let him come out while I built snow forts and tunnels for the kids. It was the first day down the stairs and out side for him and he took a long nap after lol. But it was good for his soul and motivated him. Just be careful out and about.
Every time I hold a tiny seed between my fingers, ready to plant, I think about the mature plant that will grow from it and the abundance that will come from it. Geesh, what miraculous thing! Jill, you look great even though you may not feel great...yet. Loved seeing the goats.
So glad you are healing and up at it again. Please pray for my son whom just had enucleation w implant on his right eye. He's in a lot of pain and will be for days to come.TIA
My family loves collecting eggs. Before we go collect them we each guess a number for how many eggs we may have. We only have two hens now, so hopefully we can expand soon.
I’m sure this vlog was exhausting to film and put together for you, but thank you for sharing your garden with us! Your perseverance and energy in the face of difficulty is inspiring. Take care of yourself xoxoxo
Congrats on feeling better! Yay! I hope that you don't mind if I share my experience: If you are just doing potatoes on new ground, no need to bring in soil. Put down straw, weeds, grass, leaves, newspaper, thin cardboard, paper, and let it rot in contact with the soil. If you put corrugated cardboard down, use it as a removable ground cover or cover for your composting materials if it rains too much or too little. Don't use fresh manure, only aged manure if adding that. You can put potatoes directly in. Once the ground looks pretty good, put in daikon radish for the goats. I don't have goats and just compost the radish. But be sure to add organic matter consistently as you are able.
Found your channel by accident. I really enjoy your videos and i subscribe. So, glad your back on your feet from the surgery. After being down for 3 weeks from the C word..I got my motivation to start living again from just stepping out in my garden and start off right where i left off before i got sick. I so love the outdoors and nature. I will never take that for granted. So, your story so much moved me. Thank you
Look at you go! So good to see you in one of your happy places! I just finished re-watching a video that popped up on my UA-cam feed of Jess' interview vlog with you from a year ago and here you are sitting in that same pavilion amongst your "wild August garden" getting that good old fashioned healing you have been craving. Your beaming sweet smile says it all! Continuing prayers .... have a very blessed weekend! 💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏
Be careful and don’t overdo. I remember years ago I had a minor surgery and feeling like I would be okay I ventured out to the grocery store that’s about a mile from where I live. I’m sorry to say that I had to call my husband to come and get me. I didn’t do much, was only there for a very short time but I just couldn’t go any more. Praying for complete healing and no other problems to worry about concerning your health. Blessings 🙏🏻💗🌺🪴🥰
It’s so good to see you outside in your garden. Please take your time. Love you so much, and really appreciate you. Thank you for sharing your beautiful journey.
I am so happy that you are feeling better. I love listening to you and also know the importance of being able to get around and enjoy your garden. Thanks for sharing. Continue to heal. But.... Don't over due... K?
My produce box full from the garden and collecting the eggs on my way back to the house. Winter will be soon but will have plants under lights indoors till I get a greenhouse.
Hello Jill , So happy to see you walking around the farm , thank the Lord that your lovely smile is back and you are on the mend.God bless and heal you ,body and soul... Amen
Hi first time seeing your channel. A comment on the plastic mulch over the weeds. The clear mulch may just be a greenhouse for the weeds, slowing their death if not encouraging them to thrive. They still getting light. The opaque is more effective. Appreciate the quick tour. Have a speedy recovery.
Good to see you up and around. Your hair looks so cute btw! Surprised you are planting so many things for fall. I'm in AR too and I noticed the farmer's almanac moved up our first frost date to Oct 31. Hope we all have time for one more nice autumn harvest!
Jill thank you so much for the garden tour. So happy to see you smiling. You look stronger but take it slow and take care of yourself. May Jehovah God the hearer of prayers keep you healthy and safe. My mom who suffers from Dementia really enjoys your videos. You put a smile on her face when she hears your voice and chickens in the background. ( she was raised on a farm) Enjoy the Weekend!
Good to see you up & “ at it”😛 Love all your videos! I am on the west side of Hot Springs, Ar. My daughter got to go see you all in Tenn. this summer(2022) I was sooo jealous 😌 Thankful for your speedy recovery, just take it easy a little longer!
It’s really wonderful seeing you out on your land and in your greenhouses again, also visiting your cute little goats! They were really happy to see you, too! Glad you didn’t make your visit too long...I was almost ready to scold you! Ha! Seriously, take good care of yourself and be sure enough to get plenty rest. You will have lots of time for fall gardening. 🌹🌱🌺🍃🌸🌿🍎
My beans haven’t done well either. Heartbroken 🥺🥺🥺. Had to pull zucchini because I lost the squash bug war. Only about 10 tomatoes from 18 plants. This heat makes it tough. But I absolutely love my garden anyway.
I’m growing tromboncina squash because I have a huge vine borer issue. the one I planted is young and so far I can’t tell female from male flowers. Maybe in a week or two it will be obvious. I look forward to trying them, So happy you’re feeling better and well on you way to mending. Take care beautiful!
I had the same problem you did with polycystic ovarian disease {PCOD} about 14 years ago. I think I was 48 yrs. old. I had a procedure that used robotics and it only required a few tiny surgical incisions. They removed both my ovaries and uterus. They also put in a suprapubic catheter. I did my own bladder training within the first 24 hrs and insisted that they remove that catheter. I went home the day after my surgery. I had very little pain. However, I did take full advantage of my disability insurance and take 6 weeks off work. However, I don't think I needed all that time. I had an older doctor that was actually a teacher and taught other doctors how to do this procedure. I'm lucky to live here in Nebraska with excellent physicians. My procedure wasn't an emergency situation so they had time to plan everything out. I had many students watching over the whole thing as my doctor was a teacher. He did a terrific job and I'm grateful for that. Hope you recover soon and get back your feet. Love your videos and look forward to some more.

I also add chunks of potatoes and I don't add any milk. But definitely pick those cucuzza now! (coo-coo-zah, accent on the second syllable). :)
