A banya is a type of steam bath that is popular in Russia, Finland, and other countries in Eastern Europe. It is typically made of wood and has a steam room with wooden benches, leafy branches that are used for massages, and buckets or pools of cold water.
The rocks in a banya are heated in a stove and then water is poured over them to create steam. The steam is very hot and humid, and it is believed to have many health benefits, including:
Improving circulation
Reducing stress
Relieving muscle pain
Detoxifying the skin
Boosting the immune system
The fresh eucalyptus tree branches that are used in a banya are called веники (veniks). They are believed to have additional health benefits, such as:
Reducing inflammation
Soothing the skin
Helping to clear the respiratory system
and in real banyas, everyone is naked.
