i appreciate zach being stoked about how monumental this is for native american rep in cinema, and how it was made to help renew interest in the comanche language and culture. we stan this film!!!
Btw the Buffalo scene is significant to the desecration of Native Americans by colonizers and the US to kill the native populations. Trappers not only killed them just for their hides, but they were killed in mass to decrease a significant food source for the tribes who hunted them for food.
My first thought when they showed the buffalos: wait was that done by the predator or humans? It kinda took me aback, because I wasn't expecting something so deep and introspective in a predator movie...
@@pattomwau I'm truly not an expert on this, but I wanna maybe clarify your question. Do you mean the (near) extinction of buffalo happened so many years later? Yes, absolutely. And today they're just barely off the threatened species list. The juxtaposition of having the humans and literal "Predator ™" as a culprit, I believe is the point. We're capable of worse atrocities, there's no honor in man's valor.
native movies the I always recommend: Last of the dogmen, bury my heart at wounded knee, smoke signals, and dance me outside. Reservation dogs is a good hulu show too.
Also for Inuit representation see "The Grizzlies" it's unfortunately a bit white saviour-y but it's based on a true story so that can't really be helped
Awww Hippo is here! Also, there’s a great (imo) Maori film called The Dead Lands that’s pretty much entirely in Te Reo/Maori language! It would be so cool if yall reviewed that one, too.
I think I enjoyed the final fight so much because this lady had the worst day! She got knocked out, fell into the pit of despair, the bear almost ate her, she got tied up, lost everyone and THEN...she kicked the things ass so hard!
I LOVED this movie! I really loved how the predator only used weapons compatible with what it was fighting. Arrows got shooting spikes. Guns got fire power. It was so soooo good! And the culture awareness is amazing!
When Naru made her little speech and then ate the thing to make her blood turn cold I was like SHE MF DID THAT!!!!!!!!!!! One theme I loved was that Naru stuck to her ways even though people told her it wasn’t the right way to hunt. And look, she killed that predator with her own methods and it worked. Loved this movie.
Will probably have to watch again for content. I'm too busy watching the pupper want in Garrett's lap, the almost shiny braids framing Kelsey's face, and the adorable curl on Zach's forehead!
I looked up the name and I was very confused for a minute, especially because I recognized her from Longmire 😬 I kept waiting for Zach to correct himself ooooops
There are so many things I love about this movie! Fans and new people can enjoy it since the callbacks/references are wisely used sparingly instead of being a crutch. Actual thought and care was put into it from day one. They actually had native people in the crew from the start instead of just hiring one last minute. Naru (Amber Midthunder) had to train and prepare to take on the Predator instead of just being highly skilled tactician and warrior from the start.
I know the score isn’t super in your face during the movie but I really recommend checking it out on Spotify or wherever because it’s sooooo good, genuinely gives me chills
Wanna have fun? I remind you of that! Do you guys remember Charlie's Angels 1 & 2 (2000, 2003,)? There are perfect material for the guilty pleasure episode. It's like they were made for this....
It's a movie my boyfriend and I can both be engrossed in watching. This will be perfect for our next movie night. Will definitely push for it to be in the Comanche dubbed version with English subtitles.
If you loved Amber Midthunder you should watch Legion which while being an insane TV comicbook experiment also star’s an absolutely kickass preformance by her.
If you watch the entire credits where the illustrations accompany it, you see that the predators coming back is teased there as it ends with a bunch more ships arriving. so maybe a second prey movie coming ???
Spoiler but … At the end of the animation during the rolling credits it shows 3 predator ships coming out of the clouds. My theory, they trade weapons and that’s how the predators have the gun for the second predator movie
Ngl I had low expectations and wasn’t digging it in the beginning and ended up falling asleep( got super high before watching). BUT when I watched it again my god I’m so glad I watched this amazing movie, IT IS SO AMAZING, INTENSE, SHOCKING AND SOOOO BADASS! Wins all around
While I was watching it, all I could think was that THIS would be so much better if they were talking in their native language. (the characters, not the actors)
Also I was really scared to watch this video cause of the internal biases people have to Indigenous ppl that they don't realize. I really thought that might come out. Relieved to say that all is well. Phew. Great podcast. ❤️
I don't think it would be the same movie if it was a lion. It's probably made with like an alien figure in mind since it's a direct metaphor for colonization.
Great film so happy for the representation but there was still white man narrative, for one; the way the males in the clan treated her, it was not representative of the matriarchal society of the Comanche/Numunu of the time. But overall very awesome movie and amazing actors, much respect to the Midthunder family and casting.
I got the impression they were like that because she was repeatedly shown to be a bad hunter, not because of her gender. Though I wish they had shown a badass female hunter with the male ones if that was what they were going for.
god i WISH Garrick would have gone into more specifics about Yautja culture - literally the hunt is their entire honour system, so much so that to be hunted by them is an honour in itself, and there's very specific criteria about who they will and will not hunt, the sick, children and the elderly are off the table and violent criminals are seen more as violent big game than an honourable trophy, And yes, the females not only hunt, but are the bigger and more dominant sex of the species who have their pick of mates. God i love the Yautja (and the service AO3 provides amirite)
Why is no one talking about the fact that they made the indigenous people speak the language we could understand and the white people were the foreigners with subtitles. Showing the colonists as was they were immigrants in a land that wasn’t theirs. Loved it so so much it’s a great and powerful movie oh yeah with aliens too.
I've seen every Predator movie and this is my favorite! I see her as being so capable, that that other hunts are nothing, so it seems like she fails at them. She knows the biggest threat. It's this predator to her people. And the animals she respects of her homeland so there is the hesitation because it'd what life has always thrived on. She is THE... THE best tracker. @@littlefoxglove276 yeah I'm Indigenous. My indigenous friends and I had some things to say. Like the sexism from the Indigenous men would never happen at that time. The Comanche were a matriarchy at the time. It was so frustrating to see. 😡
@@originalsaplings ugh but that's so disappointing! seems like something that'd be hard to miss if they really were doing any kind of extensive research/prep?? jeez
I don’t think the original Predator is getting enough credit even though it is cheesier because Prey has a lot of the same because and many sequences are referencing the first film.
I would say tho that comparing Prey to Primal does feel like putting indigenous ppl with cavemen when this movie was based 300 years ago. But I get that the comment was made out of love and excitement for the animations industry and wasn't out of disrespect. Love the show! ❤️
Actually "indigenous" is the more problematic of the two. Indigenous implies the first/original people of an area, to include native Hawaiians, Alaskans, and other unique populations. It also has issues within the US with nations that were forcefully moved to new areas. Oklahoma is home to 38 legally recognized sovereign nations, but only 5 are indigenous to the state. Native American more clearly defines the population and is more inline with other generally accepted demographic names such as African American, Italian American, etc. But where they did goof, is Zach saying it's an all Native cast... The predator and fur traders aren't.... But it's Zach. We don't love him for his brain/accuracy. Hell, I just watched him get a colonic.
i appreciate zach being stoked about how monumental this is for native american rep in cinema, and how it was made to help renew interest in the comanche language and culture. we stan this film!!!

Hippo wanted that little snack so bad that Garrick dropped oh my goodness I LOVE HIM 🥹
garrick 100% needs to talk about animation because it does not get the respect it deserves. primal is so good.

I looked up the name and I was very confused for a minute, especially because I recognized her from Longmire 😬 I kept waiting for Zach to correct himself ooooops
Ya, they didn’t even make a voice over to correct it. A little annoying but overall a good episode.
My eye kept twitching every time he said Amanda 🤦🏻♀️
I just realized they never did everything everywhere all at once which is an ABSOLUTE pleasure
