Kings and Generals' animated historical documentary series on medieval history and historiography we will talk about the so-called Phantom Time Hypothesis which posits that the Middle Ages didn't happen and will do our best in order to debunk it.

It would be interesting a video where you analize the Spanish Black Legend.
Cool
I like how people could believe kings and emperors who all hated each other could actually pull up this ridiculous conspiracy and get the whole world to back it up just because

@@12gmkk29 not the same thing tho
@@12gmkk29 they had a common enemy
And still we know even before their co-op war ended they fought each other

I remember that back in 2002, in a school in Germany, one of my History teachers thoroughly debunked this Idea already.
It really is just a fringe among fringe theories.
It is rather conspiracy theory then even hypothesis. It literally make no sense!
@@TheRezro It does once you account for the interference of the lizard men and crab people!
@@kingleech16 Neh. We have better things to do that that. Earth is not flat. You can see that with naked eye. Earth is just a space ship... I mean hollow.
It's not 300 years is the issue here. It's 10-30.
@@TheRezro he was joking..

China: Well, if some barbarian king I've never heard of is doing it, we're doing it too.

Literally bro lol. Some people can be so dumb and ridiculous
“Yes guys, everyone is in on it, the Arabs, native Americans, Indians, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese and countless other groups seperated by vast geographical obsticles had all of their histories faked!”
The ignorance, narrow mindedness and cognitive bias of some people is astounding.

Oh, I thought it is going to be about the Middle Ages as a concept. This dumb silliness is literary giving me a headache. I admire you for having the patience to debunk it.
Yeah Middle Ages as an concept is a bit stinky in itself too but that’s for another discussion
Yeah, I was first expecting something on "dark ages" = stagnation and regression of civilization. Not just 300 years just temporally slotted in. Conspiracist need better brand of tin foil !
@@Morfeusm at least that's a intellectual discussion. This is just nonsense. Shameful that it even needs to be debunked. But good on this channel for doing the work.
@@Ronnet The channel has sadly failed to tell you that the hypothesis was already discussed and debunked in Germany in the 1990s. There was nothing left to debunk.
@Bu$$yBuster on that note I watch a lot of flat earth and young earth debunking specifically because It's dense in information about scientific fields
Wouldn't it have been much simpler to say Jesus was born 300 years earlier, or to invent some other reason to start the count earlier, instead of making up several centuries from scratch?
some minority germans probably wanted to sh*t on everything not german, like the greco-latin cultures, this kind of stuff tends to surge in zealous sects, and facists and communists have a history of conspiracy mythi creation and cultivation of esoteric woo.
Imagine being a shut-in recluse for two years and insisting that your debt collectors are lying about what year it is because you don't understand compound interest either.
There is no evidence for Jesus. More evidence is actually against what the bible claims.
Well, "some people" are stupid.
Carbon dating would show.
On the one hand, it's disturbing that such a conspiracy theory exists. On the other hand, clowning on it is fun. Would love to see you guys' take on The New Chronology, a conspiracy theory that is even wilder than Phantom Time
Sadly, this "New Chronology" or "recentism" foolishness is even more worrying as it is born out of unbridled russian nationalism (created by a mathematician by the name of Anatoly Fomenko) : Everything significant in mankind History was invented or created by old russians and, by the way, Jesus was russian as well...
According to this pure madness, all accepted History is nothing but a huge conspiracy made up by jesuits during XVIIIth century.
This whole New chronoly thing is a messy mix of stupidity, bad faith, blatant lies and highly toxic nationalism.
This theory could not disturb me a bit. After all the other conspiracy theories I heard about I know there is nothing too dump to create a conspiracy theory around. Its only really disturbing that there are always people that believe in them and even put a lot of effort in it to prove it.
Disturbing? Lol chill dude.
16:06 it seems the narrator misspoke here; the Battle of Talas occurred in 751 AD, not 551. The subtitles have this correct.
One way to debunk a conspiracy theory is the sheer amount of people needed to work together while remaining silent about it to pull it off such as this one
That's exactly what I always say! The leaking of Manhattan Project data to the Soviets is a good example of how even the most funded and secretive operations in history end up in leaks and everyone finding out about it as a result.
Indeed, it takes a conspiracy to assemble the "evidence" for a conspiracy theory :)
Also, make sure to relentlessly call them "tin foilers" and stupid names like that instead of arguing in good faith.
I love hearing about conspiracies but don’t have any faith that selfish men would trust each other king enough to make something happen secretly.
I love hearing about conspiracies but don’t have any faith that selfish men would trust each other king enough to make something happen secretly.
Thanks KG for making sure History Channel will never exploit this theory
Two Words: Tang Dynasty. That's all that needs to be said to debunk this theory
Naturally, conspiracy theorists fail to realize the world outside the west exist.
yes I agree on this
Yeah that a massive boom

When did Vsauce take over Kings & Generals? 😂
Money talks.
Don't mention that annoying POS Vsauce. That guy is a knuckle magnet and spends 50 years to get to the point.

Lol should do a debunked video on people saying Rome never existed. Yes that was a tik tok but for a short min. It hurt me deeply.
this person was never in europe. there is a insane amount of evidence basically everywhere in southern and western europe.
She is a total wacko
Tik tok is garbage, it's just full of idiotic rage bait
If they want to on the Kings and Generals discord we have already made the perfect debunk
Why is that bait? There are plenty of idiots out there who believe the crap that gets put on that horrible site. It’s important that history is not besmirched further and it is challenged.
Just when i think some people cant get dumber, the world proves me wrong yet again
Right, there’s still ppl out there wearing masks and trusting what their tv tells them.. whew the past couple years was a reality check in just how dumb ppl really are...
Never underestimate the stupidity of others
The best comment of all time. I just wish I had thought of it.
There are already folks positing that the 7 Years War, Napoleonic Wars, and WWI + WWII never happened, and were just lies for governments to exert more control. The reasoning? No country or alliance could operate so many troops/ships across so much territory.
For curiosity, this is the difference for the 2 calendars:
Julian calendar: there is a leap year every 4 years, and that's it.
Gregorian calendar: also there is a leap year every 4 years, but if the year is divisible by 100, then it's not a leap year, but it is if the year is divisible by 400. For example, 1800 and 1900 were not leap years, but 2000 was.
So when the calendar was introduced there were 10 days of difference because 300, 500, 600, 700, 900, 1000, 1100, 1300, 1400, 1500 had been leap years when they were not supposed to be to keep the calendar correct
Which is why when the UK changed there were riots because the calendar was advanced 11 days.

@@williamrobert9898 well there are real conspiracies, look at the Tuskegee Study where black men were deliberately not treated for syphalis to see what would happen. Or the illegal activities of the FBIs COINTELPRO.
If you live in a country where this stuff has happened I can see why people might be more credulous of the less out there conspiracy theories.
@@williamrobert9898 ? Area 51 exists… and a lot more. The only difference between those and beliefs that are considered conspiracy theories now which will later turn out to be true, is that the latter haven’t been admitted to yet, and so you’re working with information you speculate about. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong, the only evidence that it is wrong is whatever you can rationally sort through, and then the belief in the words of authorities who have a history of covering these things up but simply tell you they won’t do it again - which you have no real reason to believe. But conspiracy theories have been true before, why would they suddenly stop being right?
I do hope the hammer comes down on ‘the Byzantines were Christianized Arabs theory’ next. Last I heard, Heraclius was actually an Arab named Harit, and Persia never collapsed as a Muslim-convert dynasty just took over the throne from the House of Sasan!

As a long time Sri Lankan fan of this channel, it made me so happy to see my island shown in this video, giving me a timestamp of sorts of Sri Lankan history, to compare the topic of this video with. Hoping to see a video on Sri Lankan history one day! Keep slaying with the content, K&G!
4:51 the absurdity of the Eastern Roman Emperor agreeing on something with the Holy Roman Emperor and the Pope is enough to discredit whatever this "hypothesis" claims
I had heard something about this theory but was not real familiar with it. Thank you for covering this.
Fantastic video keep it up your doing amazing job
I actually thought for a long time that Fomenko invented this hypothesis on his own. My cousin from Rybinsk was and maybe still is a fan of Fomenko. And Rybinsk is near Yaroslavl (note "y" in Rybinsk is pronounced like "y" in Polish, Russian "ы", and "ya" in Yaroslavl is pronounced like in English). In Yaroslavl there is a wealthy businessman who believes in that crap as well and opened a private museum about it, and unfortunately it is more popular than actual historical museums 😑 (historical museums in both cities are rather good). That is how pseudoscience spreads
A sad tale of how ignorant the general population truly is, the lack of education is astounding.
The video isn't about the hypothesis of Fomenko. It's about the hypothesis of the german publicist Heribert Illig from the 1990s and was already debunked in Germany since the 1990s.
@@chooseyouhandle Concept of Ancient Aliens is actually quite interesting. It is actually driving force behind Tomb Rider franchise and several popular adventure movies. Problem with the TV series itself is that it is almost satire of this concept. With repeated arguments, obvious jumping in conclusions and even not trying using logic.
Great start to a Sunday!
I'll watch this interesting video in 300 years when it should be available in my country and just leave a like for now
Perhaps "Dark Age" was for backwater Europe back then. How we even forget Tang Dynasty in China and Chalukya in Indian Subcontinent, Crivijaya in Southeast Asia and Savarid Dynasty in Iran Plateau? Those countries were prospered, hell even Crivijaya was much stronger compare to Byzantine Empire at that time even started colony in Madagascar, Africa. Some narcissistic European dudes that’s the answer to all life’s problems rite lol

Can you imagine how the History Channel would have approached a subject like this?!
Aliens disrupted the flow of time using the pyramids
Or some c rap
They'd probably only say that isn't true near the end of the documentary while teasing throughout that it might be true
This channel is so amazing. Thank you
Kings & Generals is my favorite alternative history UA-cam channel.
Finally, a rational, informed and systematic assemblage of evidence and reasoning to put this foolishness to bed once and for all.
We need more videos like this
Thankd. Helped me a lot.
Obviously you focus entirely on the historical evidence debunking this, but another thing I think is interesting for this and other conspiracies is research regarding the number of people directly involved being inversely proportional(and I think exponential) to the length a conspiracy could remain hidden. Such that to last 5 years a max of 2500 people can be involved(and assuming they are all specifically motivated to keep the secret) but to last 50 years a max of 500 people can be involved. There's no way to say very few people would have been involved in this(mass rewrites occurring in multiple libraries/monasteries/government records across multiple countries) or that these people would be motivated to follow one fixed conspiracy(some countries involved having antagonistic religious/cultural/political interests with each other) and then the conspiracy lasts 1000+ years?
That’s why you tie up loose ends, of course. I’m sure Epstein knows this well
not to mention the numbers are much smaller than that as well.
It's already difficult to keep a birthday party a secret between ten people. Imagine trying to keep a huge secret among thousands!

Really appreciated this video, because I've been enjoying a Comic The Dapartment of Truth. And that book uses this conspiracy as the baises of all future conspiracies. @@tonywhite8131 - Oh please. I think this is a rather extreme example of otherwise intelligent people's stupid habit of babying people.
Referring to a wingnut theory as a wingnut theory is not "mean" or "disrespectful". It is rather what we'd call "accurate". Yes, be kind to people... but don't tell them their insanity is something else. It isn't. Tell them the truth.
We've become altogether too concerned about respecting lunacy (or getting our feelings hurt when our own lunacy is correctly described as lunacy) and it's poisoning our society. American: "Did the Middle Ages happen?"
European: Looks out the window and sees the huge ruins of the castle.
"Yep."
Castle building really started only in the 10th century. That's one of their starting points for the theory. I don't know which castle you are seeing out of your window but it's very unlikely that it was built between 614 and 911.
@@eljanrimsa5843 The question was, "Did the Middle Ages really happen?" The 10th century is the Middle Ages, so that's about it.
@@bart183 Yeah, that's a bit of a confused of the term. Nobody doubts that 911-1453 happened. People built with stone, and there are too many buildings left to explain them away. The conspiracy theory is about the Early Middle Ages or Dark Ages, specifically from 614-911. In Germany we have the Pfalzkapelle in Aachen from this time, but not much else. If Germany would be the whole world, the conspiracy theory would make some sense.

Everything was recorded. We were not the first and deinitely not the only civilization with a calendar.
China re-wrote their history after WWII. The texts don't lie, but the order to read them in may be stretched just a bit, so that China has a history before any modern nation.

Carbon-14 testing blows the theory out of the water.
It's not that easy. The amount of C14 in the biosphere depends on solar activity and varies over time. So C14 dates have to be calibrated to another, known timeline, like dendrology. Thus you can always argue that an isolated C14 date is inaccurate ... context is important. This is different from other methods of radioactive dating.
