Yes, Xue Yang is really bad... but the entire point is that bad people are made that way by something. He was mistreated a lot, and then indoctrinated into the belief that cultivators are superior. Of freaking course he decided that killing an entire sect was an appropriate response to having lost a finger. He killed for Wen Ruohan too, and goodness knows how many people he murdered before the story even begins. And after you've killed that many people, no matter the reason, you're going to have trouble remembering what reasonable behavior is. Especially when you're barely an adult: like, lets not forget that before the time skip all of these characters are *children*. Xiao Xingchen was the first person to show him unconditional kindness (there is absolutely no way Xingchen did not recognize his voice), of course he short-circuited. Xue Yang could have become a good person, but he wasn't shown any good examples until it was too late.
Rewatching this in 2023 because I miss them so much. I hope they'll have a project together again or a bromance series someday. Their chemistry never fades. 💙
