Sometime in 2021 Ingo approached us as part of an open air festival planning (E:O:A / Rockarea A7) and told us that Kai (metal worker from the region and of course also a Motörhead fan) had had a special idea at the last Wacken Open Air. He said the only thing missing from a Motörizer concert was a "Bomber" on the traverse to create the perfect experience to properly commemorate Lemmy and Motörhead.
In late summer 2021, after a Motörizer concert in Kiel, Kai, Ingo and Christoph approached us to present Kai's ambitious project plan to us personally.
Of course, we were immediately hooked on this idea and in autumn 2021 we discussed a few framework points with Kai, Ingo and Christoph in a restaurant in Kiel. We have viewed and evaluated many photos from the original „Motörhead Bomber“ (first version) to the last (large) version. As a first milestone, we have defined the creation of the technical drawing (CAD) and the desired dimensions of the "Bomber". Of course, the „Bomber“ had to be transportable and had to be quickly assembled from the appropriate individual parts and dismantled just as quickly.
The next construction meeting then took place in the premises of Kai's metal construction company, where he presented the finished design documents to the „Bomber“. The technical drawings made by his colleague Simon were of a very high quality. We only adjusted the smallest details together and then determined the final size for the “Bomber” to be built on site. The bomber should fit on stages of about 10m wide and we came up with a practicable wingspan of almost 6 meters.
In the spring of 2022, with the help of friendly sponsors, the necessary materials were procured (aluminum tubular frame 40mm), the first rough work could be carried out and the first official weekend date for the construction of the individual parts was set. It was a sunny, cold Saturday with lots of helping hands, beer and a barbecue. Some of the aluminum had already been prepared accordingly, so Kai could start welding the first aluminum parts according to plan.
In autumn 2022 the time had come, all parts were ready and the „Bomber“ could be assembled. The crane in Kai's company was used for the first flight tests, everything went according to plan. Parallel to the work on the bomber, we had already developed and implemented a corresponding LED lighting concept with DMX radio control.
For the safe suspension of the „Bomber“ on the trusses of various stages, we then consulted an expert from a suitable company. With Florian and the help of his colleagues, we created and implemented a professional rigging concept.
In November 2022, the maiden flight took place in Kai's company hall with a Motörizer Live Gig and „Bomber“ on the ceiling, to which everyone involved in the project was invited. There was a lot of Rock'n'Roll, a good mood, a relaxed atmosphere, a lot of beer and an impressive stage design (see video).
And that's the end of this story and Kai's ambitious plan to rebuild a „Motörhead Bomber." There were definitely a few moments in this project when Kai saw his ambitious plan as overly ambitious, but we think it rocks and couldn't have worked out any better. All thumbs up for that.
