Afterall, pain makes up a substantial part of what would garner a fear response in a person. If game shows weren't allowed to use threat to bodily harm as a challenge there would be no water, no heights, no animals, no collison with objects, no fighting/sparring challenges etc as they all include a risk to the individual.
