    • @MrNoucfeanor
      @MrNoucfeanor 4 дні тому

      I'm a layman and have little understanding of this. Yet I can still appreciate the importance of this event!

    • @professorg8383
      @professorg8383 4 дні тому

      It's impressive looking, but the engineering is the easier part. In reality the physics is much the same in many ways as landing an aircraft on a runway.
      The hard part is the implementation. There are two enormous inertial forces. The mass of the booster is insanely large! Slowing the vertical force is relatively easy if the engines are performing correctly. But the horizontal forces are far more difficult to control. As vertical velocity decreases, the grid fins become near useless. By vectoring the rocket engines a relatively small component of force in the horizontal directions is exerted while most is being used to counter the vertical inertia.
      The booster is coming down in an arc and the end point of that arc needs to be pretty precise. The variables are force vectors which must be combined to hit the precise spot. The slightest error in applying those forces means disaster. A small "burp" of the engine thrust will not be recoverable. It is a very high risk maneuver with nearly no room for error.
      The math is fairly complex, but applying the appropriate force vectors precisely i the tough part. The descent arc has a very tight window of usable operation. If anything goes wrong, you can't recover.
      In order to closed loop control the final adjustments, a very accurate real time position would be necessary. But that would be exceedingly difficult to achieve. It would create another variable that could easily go wrong. It would seem to make sense to pre calculate final adjustments a bit higher in the descent arc.
      Whatever approach they take, there is so little room for error! That makes such a maneuver very risky to pull off repeatedly with reliability.
      It really seems unnecessary because the idea that the booster will return, ready to refuel and launch again in an hour or to, is insanely wishful thinking. A pad landing would make so much more sense. It would provide a bigger window for small errors and not risk serious tower damage. With a small fleet of several fully tested combos, they could fairly quickly roll out the next one for launch.
      The quick turn around concept is all about refueling the orbiting Starship quickly to counter boil off. If turn around is one day, it seems that an extra fuel top off, night make more sense. Or by adding insulation, albeit it the Stainless steel Starship is ridiculously heavy already! At some point reusability has diminishing returns. The need to refuel the Starship to make it capable of going anywhere is really the fundamental problem that makes all this other refueling nonsense necessary!
      Yes, a very impressive stunt and an "all-in" gamble that the rocket engine would work flawlessly. But the real question is why?? How does this advance the ridiculously late, single contracted Artemis 3 mission??

    My wife and I drove from Oregon to watch this historic event. Seeing it live, hearing the roar of the 33 Raptor engines and the sonic booms was amazing. Then seeing the Super Heavy booster falling back to the tower and being caught by the chop sticks was jaw dropping. It was well worth the drive.
    Back on the road to Oregon now.

    I want to add my two cents to your video; I believe that the Starship landed 100% intact, and the Flight Termination System was activated to intentionally blow it up. I don't believe that it blew up on it's own. I think, in order to ensure that the entire ship sunk in place that the plan always was to blow it, to make sure nothing was recoverable by anybody. And also, to make sure that the Methane, Oxygen, Nitrogen, & CO2 that were all stored in various tanks were all vented to the atmosphere rather than sinking.

    This feat was outstanding to the power of outstanding. The most remarkable to me is the accuracy. Elon said one time that he expects to not need legs to land on and instead will be able to just land on a couple of pins. Not unreal, as this catch showed.

    The hot plasma is wrapping around the edge of the flap and heating the unprotected side. They only need a few more tiles in that area. I doubt they will tile the entire flap now that they have (hopefully) a better set of data to work from. They probably don't have 18,000 temperature sensors but they really don't need that many. They can extrapolate most places.

    Tying this into the theme of this channel, Starship will be used to rapidly expand the Starlink constellation. It can loft many times more per flight and will also finally enable the full-sized Version 2 satellites to join the smaller satellites now in orbit.

    I recall during the broadcast that they mentioned some tiles were left off on purpose to test. Not sure the locations but perhaps that why you see one of the flap was glowing.
    Perhaps the test was to see if the ablative material layer itself can keep the flap from burning through like in IFT4.

    They try different methods all over the craft specific to each observed challenge. Some failed and some did not. That is called test data and that is what they are after to optimize the material, system, and expected service life.
    That goes for tiles and everything else.

    Jay, I rewatched you channel several time yesterday and then started on channel after channel wanting more news but it was all alike. Late in the evening I thought what's logically next.
    I came to the same conclusion you did. First, Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon is the greatest historical space achievement. Second is this booster being caught. Third is Starship being caught. Fourh, two caught simultaneously.
    Fifth, landing on Mars with a fleet parked in orbit and and on Mars surface. All in two Mars cycles. By 2030.

    The booster catch was simply amazing. I didn’t doubt that it could be done, but I doubt that they would do it as well as it ended up. As far as starship and the flaps smelting through I think the problem is the plasma flow going around the flap and that seems to be SpaceX is understanding as well because, the block to redesign of the flaps changes their geometry to move them out of the direct plasma flow a little bit. Personally, I’m just hoping that the goal for IFT six includes launching a satellite.

  • @Todd41R

    Catch and recovery or starship is now easy!
    The reason they have concentrated on booster is because starlink booster landings and starship landings are a given.
    Now concentrate on starship surviving as reusable.
    Next launch...recovery of both Starship and booster.
    GO SPACEX!!!

    Jay with how many Falcon 9 boosters have they landed somewhere around 300 they had Data from their past performance of all those first-stage rocket returns to build a auto function program that would need some updates from their first four flights before this current StarShip 5 launched. I was sure that all that was going to make a great first catch on the tower.
