Please define the value range for "affordable".
That's what I was thinking, laughed out loud when I read the title.
Can confirm after reviewing prices it might just scrape into the “affordable” category if he was referring to real estate 😂
Kidney, leg, Leica. If you have two kidneys or two legs you can technically afford a Leica. What I get from Leica users is that it's totally worth it.
Kai and Leica, muaah!
@@theothertonydutch it’s really not
I once walked into a Leica store. Ahh, so many memories. All those flashing blue and red lights in the distance as I strolled in...
That intro where you’re holding the bread I was expecting you to throw it to the ducks and you just shove it in your mouth, I died hahaha
ducks are waiting 😂
I’m so broke, I couldn’t afford to finish this video. Thanks anyway!
Got my M9 a few years ago with a replaced sensor with a 50mm Summicron for £2000...Crazy to see how the prices have climbed. Scared to sell it because I doubt I'd ever be able to afford one again.
The most affordable Leica is actually the Panasonic Lumix S5 shooting in RAW, with vintage Leica LTM glass (whatever you can get cheapest)
Leica R mount lenses with the official adapter
Anyone knows if one can set in-camera color profiles for the S5 to try to emulate Leica SOOC?
@@mipmipmipmipmip not as far as I know. But you do have Lightroom presets to emulate Leica simulations, which can work well if you shoot RAW
@@vaidehiarts which ones are those?
When you're buying a Leica camera, the best choice you have is not to buy a Leica camera. You're paying for the hipster brand logo, not the specs and not the image quality, those two are non existent in any Leica camera up to date. Leica lenses are top notch but their cameras are just ridiculously overpriced pieces of junk, made for people that have more money than brains and that's coming from someone who was born into a family who owns 4 industrial tool making factories in Germany and Croatia. Leica makes absolutely terrible cameras. Even modern 500 EUR point-and-shoot cameras have more tech in them than any Leica camera up to date and yet these Leica cameras are sold for 5, 6, 7 thousand EUR or much more than that. I mean, Leica is literally selling A FILM CAMERA, yes they are selling A FILM CAMERA for 9,000 EUR! Yeah you heard that right, 9,000 EUR for a FILM CAMERA that cost 80-100 EUR in materials to manufacture!
If you are thinking of buying a Leica camera - don't. You will be paying thousands for a camera that handles and performs like a camera from 1950's. Nothing inside and on Leica cameras, is worth that much money. Their cameras should not cost more than 500-1,000 EUR. They just don't have any tech in them to justify those price points.
I still love shooting with the 5D M2!! Old cameras ROCK !!!!
You definetly must make a oldschool digicam battle with 7 megapixel cameras. Like the Sony Cybertosh DSC ones with aviewfinder or Panon Cowertsoh
I use a pair of 240s and just love them.... The battery life is to die for.. Thanks Kai...
Deals are put there but it’s tough with Leica gear. I bought an M8 with a voigtlander 35mm Nokton for $1100 a few years ago. Took a long time to find one in a price rage I was comfortable with. and the camera had 155k actuations but she still runs great.
Had an M8 about 10 years ago and I used a Zeiss 35/2 as my "50". Man was I happy back then. I could almost go back to them if I wanted to shoot personal photos on digital.
I still have a similar set today
I like that this has clearly taken several months to film. Starting in winter or autumn and finishing after the heatwaves.
Still love my M9. I’ve had the sensor changed. On a sunny day, there is nothing better. 🙂
So nice to see Dan again!
The Leica SL 601 is amazing, easily my favourite camera ever…. Feels like it was carved out of granite and so quick to work with with an M mount lens, tons quicker than a rangefinder.
The SL is perfect for all kinds of MF glass.
So is any other modern camera
Yes, but if you buy a leica, you buy the M series, as the Q and SL are just rebranded panasonics. I mean the Later versions.
Just what I needed 🙃
I recently picked up an MP240 for about 2200 EUR. Great Camera. Even better was that I bought an M240 and they somehow sent me the MP model.
X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 are my affordable Leicas.
Same here. Besides, the X-Pro 1 sensor is downright magical.
@@krisjustkris3465 that’s the one to own. Just sold off my XT3 and XH1 but the Xpro1 stays. Saving my sheckles for a XH2 or XH2S.
@@rumporridge1 I often think about selling it, since my primary system is Nikon and I plan on moving to sony. There is no point in having 2 systems, but every time I shoot the XPro1 I decide to keep it for a bit more time.
I own a leica x2 it's more affordable than a m8 being priced under 1k and takes some great pictures the only real downside is that it's a fixed lens design so you're stuck at 35mm which is alright for me. It's a great little camera for the street
it's basically a Fuji X100 but from Leica. A friend of mine has one, hope I can try it out at some point!
I just picked up a Leica X about 2wks ago. Beautiful pics it produces.
3:16 is a magnificent photo. Great job. Not into Leicas, you know, they are so cheap, but I loved to see the video review. 930K Subscribers, closing to one million.
Alternate title: Kai single-handedly raises the resale value of Leicas by increasing demand so he can finance his next Leica.
Where's the logic in that? If resale value goes up then the one he wants to buy will also get more expensive...
@@Ni5ei let’s say he wanted a new m11, that isn’t featured in this video for one, and the prices of those don’t fluctuate like older ones. If he were trying to sell an m8 or m9 for example to finance an m11, that would make perfect sense. But also it’s a joke.
Great video. I had a CL with 4 lenses and a Fuji X100V. Sold them and got a Q2. I love it.
I like how today's video had a vintage feel to it, as if the video lens was covered in buttery finger prints.
You can actually fix the M9 again now. It's only the glass in front of the sensor, not the actual sensor, that needs to be switched out. Kolarivision will remove the corroded glass and switch it with a new one of your choice for you. It's not free of course, but the M9 can live on!
Thanks for the info! Would you know how much such a service could cost?
@@williamhindle4366 last I check, a thousand bucks….. sigh
@Apple Pear Good point. I suppose getting a discounted M9 that's already corroded and paying for the service might be the way to go.
@@williamhindle4366 Yep. Or get a late production M-E/M9, which apparently already has the fix built in from the factory. That's what I did, and I haven't had any problems with the glass.
I had one M9 ruined by Kolari, the sensor leads got corroded and received very friendly commiserations by them. Don't recommend.
0:58 I really thought he was going to feed them lol 😆 🤣
Leica Q can be had for less than £2500 now. I'd take the Q over any of these tbh.
You guys already wearing winter coats up there, or was this shot….ages ago?
Got a Leica M8 for 700€, however, noticed that currently the prices are increasing was a time when the M8 was on the cheap. Despite the age love the M8 more than my previous Fujifilm cameras and Sony rx1.
Given the budgets you’re talking I’d rather spend that kinda dosh on decent glass for my Fuji’s, which was why I went the Fuji route.
You are still gonna pay an arm and a leg for Leica glass.
I love the whole RF thing and all, but the premium you pay for the whole system has me looking at less dear alternatives.
That's why I got an XPRO3. The lenses are great and not too costly. Plus there are a ton of affordable vintage M42 lenses that adapt easily if you want to do that whole manual thing.
I still may get a Japanese Leica knock off for film stuff. Those 50's and 60's Japanese RFs are not bad!
A lot of people don’t realize it before they actually get a Leica, that the accessories and repair prices are super expensive. (and repairs take a looooong time too🤦🏻♂️)
If all you want is a Leica, no doubt SL601 will be a better bang for your buck. It has a Better and bigger EVF compared to visoflex attachments. It can use L mount from sigma, Panasonic, or Leica. Pop on an adapter and you can use M/Ltm/R mount from the past. You’ll never have to worry about frame lines. But if you’re looking for the range finder experience, m240 is the best bang for your buck.
where is this at and is it winter already? This through me into a weird funk trying to figure out if I had missed a few months of my life.
Sort of liked the M8. Simple and easy to use. Beautiful colours. But it was a hoover, the dust on the sensor drove me mad, and I didn't like the crop. I hated the Typ 240. It was an uncomfortable brick, and eventually took it off the shelf less and less. So will stick with my M6 and digital Fujis until the M10 becomes a sane price.
This pretty much, the XE line fills the niche these do for a reasonable price while also being comfortable to use. The XE2(s) has the xtrans 2 sensor for what most people prefer color wise, and (at least for me) the XE4 looks like amazing small camera with a brick/rangefinder styling and all-around good performance for what it is while being cheaper than the X100V and with lens options.
Eating that bread was an hilarious bit.
I love my Leitz CL
Just bagged an M9 really cheap. It has the sensor issue, but if you shoot around the 35-50mm mark and at f2.8 and wider, the issue really doesn't present itself. It is limiting, but not massively. Loving the experience so far.
You can apparently even change the corroded sensor glass yourself. There's a guy on reddit that did it.
@@grainynesh6232 yeah, I’ve seen this. I’m not adverse to tinkering ;)
Love my m240. Could sell it after 6 years for what I paid for it. Bonkers. I use it daily for work and life.
What did you shoot part of this on? A Ricoh Theta?😮
Being affordable, I'm genuinely curious what the new L2 technology will bring to the table? I know Panasonic & Leica have been partners for yrs and there is definitely Panasonic DNA in the Q's, SL etc.
What about the CL? I think it’s better than the M240.
@@sromrellI was looking at CL’s and ended up just buying a Leica X typ 113. It’s an underdog camera but it takes beautiful pictures.
I use a Fujifilm X100S with a Leica strap. I am still amazed at how much respect I get because my camera gets mistaken for one of them Leica.... LOL!
Your idea of affordable and mine,I don't think we are on the same planet lol, great channel btw, watching from Shropshire.
Poor man here with a used X1. Love it. Had a D Lux 3 - new, loved it, years later stepped on it…☹️
X1 is a fantastic camera and in no terms a poor man’s camera. They still go for $1200+ usd all these years later. Price doesn’t even matter. What matters is that actually all of these years later, the x1 STILL puts out impressive performance. I have an x2 and tl2…love them both!
Hi. Do you recommended me shop in Hong Kong sailing used Leica?
The R line is unbelievable. I got an R5, 2 Lenses and Accessories for 280 quid
Stolen? lol
I bought an SL a few years back for £1900, a total bargain for what is possibly the best quality thing of any type I have ever held. It is also much cheaper than buying say a new Sony which deprecates rapidly. Image quality… really very good up to ISO3200. However there’s a giant expensive catch… an itch that needed to be scratched… yep 3 years on the SL was lonely, buying it lenses wasn’t cutting it and well M10s are not great value, an M240 is a tiny backward step in IQ so it had to be an M11. So here’s the rub, the M11 is great, the rangefinder experience, the IQ, the speed, but it isn’t as well made as the SL and my first M11 gave up the ghost after only 200 shots and had to be replaced, also in terms of gripes the attachable EVF is OK, but not a patch on the SL EVF, but mostly I use the rangefinder. So here’s the problem… a £1500 SL will send you down an enjoyable, rewarding but ultimately expensive path. You have been warned. Buy Kai’s book by the way, it’s very good.
If you turn on classic meter with no evf (latest firmware), the M240 is much faster to shoot and quieter. I also turn off image review.
I’ve always wanted an SL.
SL seems like a good deal, doesn't cost much more than Panasonic S1 it, I believe, is based on
Good advice
Glad I never gave up on film. Will never sell my stable of M and R Leicas and the many, many lenses and tonnes of accessories. If I did, I’d never afford to get back in.
I heard that having a Leica will make you a great photographer. I just wanted a camera that said "Leica" somewhere on it and put gaffer tape over the red dot.
when was this filmed?
I love the SL2 so much I cant be bothered with all the previous stuff...
SL2 is so so awesome. Love it so much. Very intuitive and second nature when shooting. Hey! Profoto support has arrived my friend! Cheers 🍻!
When and where did you make this vid, mid winter or Argentina? Love Leica, cant afford Leica, not even the cheap ones!
Yeah, getting kind of FED up with all these "affordable" cameras. (That was a joke, because a Fed-2 or Fed-3 is about 50 bucks and actually affordable and they're Leica clones.)
Gotta love how people can't deal with it when a photographer chooses Leica. Everyone knows even if you don't want or need all the features modern digital cameras offer you should still get one because that stuff you don't want makes it a better value. .... Derp.
Please make more videos. The interwebs needs more Kai. Cheers.
No love for the CL or TL2?
My poor man rangefinder styled body (obviously not a rangefinder, don't crucify me) is a PanaLumix GX85 with a few Leica made lenses. I also picked up a few used Canon M cameras dirt cheap from a friend that went R (where I will eventually, but like 400 bucks for an M5 and M100 both very good condition is hard to beat) and using an S95 for a while on my walks. The S95 is CCD, but in my experience, I get less apparent color clipping/over saturated detail loss while still having pop to it with the M cameras.
TBH I'd buy a Pixii before I buy a Leica just to support competition. I like rangefinders, I hate the monopoly basically one company has on them resulting is massively inflated prices only exacerbated by a sheep like fanbase driving prices up even more. More power to them, their money so they can do whatever they want with it.
I’m honestly surprised there was no mention of the Leica CL or the Leica TL2…fantastic cameras that are cheaper than the M models.
Leica analog are the best. M3 like a Swiss clock never fail
I thought it was a video about affordable Leica lenses. 🤣 Maybe you can do that next.
Is that a nd filter flare, reli look not so decent.
Leica and affordable, never in my mind those words come together XD
You can leave out that XD.
What the heck happened to the outdoor footage? Did you forget a pro mist on the lens?
yeah i got mine used m-p 240 for bloody cheap at 2100€
or... well... almost two monthly salaries at a time
Wasn’t the “affordable “ I was expecting, but it is a Leica! You did film this in the spring though, not in the summer of 2022 when it was released! Had me confused with those jackets.
Yeah, with all respect Kai, I will Get a used Z7 for $1400 or Z5 or Fuji XS10 instead of the Leica.
guys who understand about cameras, I saw Nikon F3HP in my local shop. I want to buy it. It is in mint condition. Do you think is it worth 950 pounds?
What about the MP?
I'd be really iffy on buying old digital cameras. Might work fine now, but in a year it could be a multi-thousand-dollar-brick. Especially with the m8 and m9.
I thought the whole idea was to be seen wearing it not take pictures, have a Canikon/Sony/Fugi/Olympus/mobile phone to actually take pictures 😄
I am always torn between buying a Leica Q2 or buying an M. My preferred focal length is 35mm.... but I figure 45mp of the Q is going to be enough to work with, and the 35mm and 50mm crop modes are good enough for what I would use a Leica for. I think the M's will keep value longer, but its a lot more to spend. Realistically how many lenses would I actually buy and use for an M. I feel 28-50mm is a good enough range for most subjects. I guess I could always go with a Q and switch later if I regret it.
Do you love a true rangefinder and manual focusing? If the answer is yes, then the M is what you need.
@@patrickjclarke Yes. that is the question... I feel if I knew the answer the decision would be easy. The trouble is that my experience with range finders is pretty low. I have shot with some film compact ones... but not anything like a leica. But the whole reason I am going to treat myself is to slow down and shoot different from my Sony system. When I adapt some of my glass for my old Nikon FA, or Canon FD lenses I don't have a problem with using zone focusing to meet my needs. It a big jump, and a big commitment though.
Thanks for the great camera advice, duck hater! 0:57
I'll just use my R6 with some primes, I guess.
Your every video you have a camera in one hand and a takeaway in the other!!
Did you film this 8 months ago? Way too hot to be wearing all those layers in London right now
I can't argue with the M240 as a value prop. Just could never get over its fatboy chunkiness.
Why not an M2? It’s costs around £1K, is fully mechanical, has amazing build quality, and uses the same M mount. It’s the best deal by far.
Why not à Ricoh GXR with an M unit ??
Doesn’t the M8 also run the risk of sensor failure?
Not that I've heard.
No S006?
You know you bought too many Leicas when you eat the stale bread yourself instead of feeding the ducks!
That tagging at 8:40 so juvenile. And yet I still laugh. Not sure I would have if I was at the same yoga class.
The Barnacks are affordable (except the IIIg). That's about it.
They are also beautiful cameras. The industrial Art Deco styling is just amazing. But they're not that practical IMHO. I will buy one again, though, that's for sure. The VF is even worse than a Canon P. But, there is a charm that you can't resist.
I’m take the Fujifilm X100V
Kind of like buying an old Jaguar automobile. Ancient tech, no comparison to modern cameras, but stylish.
Leica hits a bottom price point when the sell supply is high before holding a strong market value after, sometimes goes up when influencers like Kai talk about them 🤣
Lenses and film bodies will hold the value best, unless new lenses are released. Digital Ms will always go down, often 50-65% of the brand new price after a year for used and 80-90% new within months if you don't go to the boutique store.
M6 however is the most overpriced overhyped body imo. 🤣
Leica M5:
"Am I joke to you?"
M8 LOL. M9 corroded sensors now. The 240 makes a bit of sense. Maybe a Q or Q2 makes the most sense. The SL is fugly.
Is the Leica SL sensor the same as the Panasonic s5?
No
Where's the leicaflex? And the r lineup??
Panasonic s5
Love my Leica 240! Why? Price point, I purchased it used. Took my time and waited until I found one at Leica Miami that met my requirements; extra batteries, half case, thumbs up, Leica packaging. The heft, feels good and solid in my hand. It is slow, have to think about what you're doing. It's a keeper for me, even after I purchase a use M10 in the future.
You overpaid for something underperforming.
only lecia, I'm wanted back when I wanted one, m6 ttl was around 800 - 1k for very excellent mint camera. Now it like 2k+ for low end 4k+ for mint. sad times. rumours of new leica film camera finger crossed designed style like m6 ttl
Not enough M11’s out there because I’m waiting for a used M10-P.
2:36 what sound did I just hear in the background lol
No love for Leica X Vario?
So to recap buy an SL, I have and its lovely. It only does one thing but it does it v well up to 3200 iso and is simple like me. Amsuing to see you're both still trying to wear masks.
M8 is a ticking time bomb..kaput anytime with no parts
Im suprised the Leica Q1 has kept such value but it seems to have. Still like 2,500 to get used.
really worth it. I don’t think there are much different between Q and Q2 except the megapixels.
@@AyaLinus I have a Q2, had a Q. The Q is def an awesome cam, but beyond higher res the Q2 has a waaay better EVF, battery and remote connectivity.
The ergonomics have been gently proved too
