Hi. I see that you have used a much thicker solder wire than that which was supplied with the iron. I have an iron from amazon but looks different from your maker. The solder wire supplied is very thin indeed, like yours in the video on opening up but, I could not get it to sit on the iron long enough to enable me to get a 'glob' before the solder dropped off. I was wondering if this was really meant for electronics and not jewellery - what a waste! I so wanted to try your pendants with solder and red rubber stamping into the pattern. This might be a warning to other beginners to think about? Thank you for sharing - I have 3 of your books and watch most if not all of your videos - thank you so much for sharing your ideas, thoughts and expertise.

If solder is not sticking to your iron tip your iron may not have a high enough wattage or your tip may need to be tinned (see my previous videos for that.) Or you could be attempting to pick up too large of a drop of solder. I only use jewelry-grade lead-free solder, which I have a link to in the description.

Great video! Thank you! I love that simple ring too! Can you please tell me what temp you used for the decorative dots? I always have trouble with them. I thought when the solder gets spiky it was because the iron got too cool but looks like when it happened in this video you just added more flux. Is that what you always do?

Actually, I did not adjust the temp at all throughout the entire video! It did the entire thing at whatever temp I mentioned in the video when I started the project. Yes that can be from your iron getting too cool but I also use a lot of flux. Good luck!

On another topic, I Would love to do the Luna moth type of embossed copper but the darn cuttlebug and plates are about $140 +, no less on eBay. Any tips where might be more affordable?

I bought mine years ago - I think at Joanne Fabrics - when they offered a coupon of 40% off of one item, so I got lucky. I watched and waited for a sale or coupon. You may be able to find a used one on Facebook marketplace or somewhere similar. It is an investment, but if you use it a lot it pays for itself.

A question please - does solder patina by itself or will it stay silver. Thanks. Good luck with your book - looking forward to seeing what's in it - I have all your other books btw. I have not started to solder yet but have the equipment for when I do (including an fume extractor fan) !

Over time without being polished it will eventually change from a bright shiny finish to more of a dull gray finish and that is due to natural oxidation. That can be removed with some polish. But it will never turn a dark black color like it would if you were to apply a chemical patina.

Hey! I’m having trouble getting started with soldering. For some reason the solder won’t stick. I’ve made sure the coppers clean, I’ve got good heat and lots of flux, I’m a little bit stumped any help is greatly appreciated!

It's really hard to say without being there, as it could be a number of things. Do you have my book Soldering Iron Jewelry? In it I go over every detail, so it might be helpful for you. www.amazon.com/shop/laurabethlove
