Thank you very much, Quincy. I previously knew various ways to practice time with a metronome (some even "very hard"). But here you showed at a "difficult level" an excellent and important exercise - how to play with "up beat" before different quarter notes. This is exactly the exercise that cures us from the tendency to gradually accelerate. After all, different drummers have this happening at different times. Someone can accelerate from the very beginning (from the second quarter note), and the other is able to play a couple of bar evenly and then begin to accelerate. Here we study to be real stable.

I also do another practice with the metronome. I set it on 10 - 20, and either get a beat every 2th measure, or a beat every 4th measure. The last one would mean tempo 160 with a beat every 4 measure. I'm gonna practice the hard and damn hard you showed here. Thankyou.
I have an even more difficult exercise than that!!! Play every exercise from the video but make the metronome skip one beat. Then make it play for two beats stop for two beats. Then 4/4, 8/8, 12/12 for the blues form, 32/32 for the aaba form etc. That's a extremely difficult exercise specially when the gap gets bigger
Love your positive message - but imitate? Noooooooo! Please beginners/intermediate and all level players, do NOT imitate. Maybe a small child drummer needs to imitate. A young adult or adult player takes inspiration-even plays exactly what great drummers do (in your own way), then RECREATE. Debatable, it’s a deep subject, but important to my heart. Thanks for the comment Greg but yes, imitate. All of the Masters of music and even the innovators at one point imitated their idols. For example, Tony Williams talks about how he learned everything that Max roach and Art Blakey played on albums. John Coltrane wanted to sound just like Charlie Parker (on alto) and Lester Young before he became “John Coltrane”. Miles Davis learned everything Dizzy Gillespie play before getting to his own sound. These are our innovators of music and yet they too went through an imitation phase. It’s just a part of the path to greatness that is proven. Now of course if you’re not trying to sound great, then you can do whatever you want. Remember this is just a phase. At some point we have to move on and try and innovate and create something for ourself.
Great conversation topic! Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins turned my young brain onto this decades ago and it really helped. In the 90s so many of my crew were focused on being "new" and ignoring where all the music has came from. We all wanted to discard the current sounds and blaze new territory, but I learned that we are a combination of our influences. I used to not see how my hip hop or grunge experiences, or even my grandparents AM kitchen radio, are part of my sound today. Diving DEEPER into my influences, and combining that with practicing the fundamentals ad nauseam contributes to new ground in my improvisation. So imitation perhaps as practice, but not as pursuit.

Great lesson! I love the idea of zooming in and out of where that click hits. Like having the click hit every 2 bars, or zooming in like how you are doing.
One cool exercise is a metric modulation thing I picked up from a Harry Miree video. It's basically a 3 against 4 feel, where you accent beats 1 and 3 around a nice medium tempo (115-ish) in 4/4 and you play it as a 3/4 by placing the click in your head as beats 1 and the and of 2 while you play a steady half time beat in 4/4 so it sounds a bit like a clave. Tempo is a great metronome app because it allows you to accent or silence beats as well as try different subdivisions. Awesome video once again Q! :)
I would love it if all musicians had a metronome routine. I play free improv and the music itself is pretty squirrely by nature, but I feel like the freeness of it is about finding new territory at the fringes of music, not just making noise. Music is like a martial art to me, there is constant growth and increasing awareness of the subtleties that can really only happen with invested time. I'm always blown away by people that don't "study", lol. Maybe I'm a jerk, though! I get excited about what can happen with the entire band, not just my own playing. That's why I watch channels like this. 🥁

Excellent lesson Professor Q! I just have one comment and question. Isn't it everyone's responsibility in the band to know where "1" is? Especially in the jazz context i always felt it was a cop out by the other musicians if they rely totally on the drummer to "keep the time." Im not saying the drummer should be going off at a whim in a tune, but if it's appropriate and in good taste to "step out" a bit i need to feel confident that they won't fall apart. Especially relating to tading 4s 8s or whatever. To expect otherwise seems to me to retrict a drummers creativity. Just as it's important for them to expect us as drummers to know song form and basic tennents of melody and harmony it's important for them to know, participate and "feel" the time as well. Is that wrong? Thnx🥁✌
I totally agree with you, however, if we don't practice with the idea of taking full responsibility for the time, we could easily get bulldozed by musicians we play with who don't have good time. But when we get to play in a situation where everyone is really taking responsibility for the time AND groove, FREEDOM and MAGIC! You know what I mean? Thanks for your thoughts BG.

The metronome is playing at the same rate, but he hears the click as an offbeat and starts playing in between metronome clicks to put the metronome on a different pulse. Also look up 'Benny Greb Time Awareness Using of the Click' on UA-cam, he talks about it a little more and provides a demonstration moving the pulse around without stopping the metronome. Side note: I am working on a metronome app (it'll be free) that will help with this kind of pulse shifting, but it's not quite ready yet unfortunately.

Amazing exercices! Worked on almost all of them already and I can tell that it's a tough workout for the feeling and the groove! I will try level 2 and 3 with 2 or 1 partials per mesure as I never did that! Btw I also do the level 1 "step 4, 5 and 6": 1 beat per 2, 4 or 8 mesures, normally I place it on the 4 of the 1st measure. (Got it from Jochen Rückert videos). Thank you as always!!!
That's practicing macro time, Joel! Great way to internalize hearing the longer phrase. One thing, though? Why do you put the click on the 4th beat of the 1st measure? Might be cool to place the click on the 4th beat of the 2nd, 4th, or 8th measure. Or the 3rd beat of every 2nd, 4th, or 8th measure. That way, you are playing towards a target with your phrases. That's actually how Jochen taught it in that time feel video, good fine, btw! Just an idea. Drummers and bassists have the best metronome exercises. Everyone else has to take note. As a guitarist, I know that I do :)

What metronome app gives the ability to put pulse on any beat. All I’ve used and using don’t have that capability.

Amazing exercices! Worked on almost all of them already and I can tell that it's a tough workout for the feeling and the groove!
I will try level 2 and 3 with 2 or 1 partials per mesure as I never did that!
Btw I also do the level 1 "step 4, 5 and 6": 1 beat per 2, 4 or 8 mesures, normally I place it on the 4 of the 1st measure. (Got it from Jochen Rückert videos).

That's practicing macro time, Joel! Great way to internalize hearing the longer phrase. One thing, though? Why do you put the click on the 4th beat of the 1st measure? Might be cool to place the click on the 4th beat of the 2nd, 4th, or 8th measure. Or the 3rd beat of every 2nd, 4th, or 8th measure. That way, you are playing towards a target with your phrases. That's actually how Jochen taught it in that time feel video, good fine, btw! Just an idea. Drummers and bassists have the best metronome exercises. Everyone else has to take note. As a guitarist, I know that I do :)
