What a coincidence. I commented on an Armbets video a couple of days ago about how I knew Devon's brother and how he comes from a family of super talented and smart people. I knew Shannon from his days at Stainless Studios in Toronto. To say that the guy was smart would be an understatement. The dude was a genius. Not only smart in the things he was interested in, but in everything. Incredible computer programmer too. Wrote one of the first online casinos...ran BME..made music..painted..sculpted. Super smart guy. I didn't learn of Devon from watching armwrestling, I learned about him after Shannon talked about his brother, who was an up and coming arm wrestler at the time. Now, that brother is the most influential armwrestler in the history of the sport. The Larratt kids were obviously blessed with great genetics! It sucks that his brother has passed. He was a very nice dude who was always kind to me and helped me with whatever I needed. Both in-person and online. I even remember his old radio show, 'the Dilaudid Glide'. Much respect to the Glider.

Sorry for the loss of your brother Devon. I lost both my parents over the past few years, and I almost lost my brother recently after he had congestive heart failure and a stroke. I think he gave you a gift with that story. Now, you'll carry a piece of him with you for the rest of your days. I think we learn a lot from loss. For me, it made me not sweat the small stuff nearly as much. It made me start living each day with a lot more purpose as well.

The way you tell stories and articulate yourself makes people wanna listen when you talk. You said you've only read like 2 books ever. Well you come across as a very academically smart individual. Seem like the kinda guy that's read tons of books and has a plethora of random knowledge. So maybe the story is true and the pack you 2 made came true when he passed on you received his strength. His knowledge. Kinda deep if you think about it... or maybe i just sound corny lol... either way me and my brother used to be best of friends growing up... until the passed few years... this story makes me wanna go give him a hug.

Thanks for sharing, Devon. I lost my mother to colon cancer last August, I only learned about the cancer about 3 months before her passing. She raised my brother and me alone, our dad was out of the picture by the time we were 3 or so years old so I have no real memories of him. She likely knew about the cancer for at least a year, probably more, the size of the tumours pointed at 5-10 years of growth. That's irrelevant at this point, even though I was furious that she kept this from us at the time. Now I realise she had her reasons, and even if I disagree with them the only positive thing I can do is just accept it and move past the anger. She was very wise, and used to share absolute nuggets of wisdom that, as a child, I thought were only platitudes, but now in my early 30s I've realised just how important those 'lessons' were in life, really the way to lead a fulfilling life. I got a tattoo of one of the words she used to say, really a portmanteau in Spanish, after her passing, my twin brother did as well, also my cousin (my mom was his godmother) and his wife got the exact same tattoo, in the exact same location - right over the right ribcage. I also used to think that tattoos were just spoiling a body, but after her final words she ever said to me were "don't be afraid to live your life", I've realised that life comes with an expiration date, we just really can't be sure when that date is, so may as well live life fully, doing whatever makes us happy and content, without hurting others. I was mad for a long time (I guess I'm still mad) that I prioritised returning to where I live (we lived in separate continents) for work, hoping that her condition would improve with the chemo - but her condition deteriorated very quickly after that, and she passed some weeks later. Luckily my brother was there for her by her side in the end, something I will eternally be happy for yet unhappy I wasn't there to support him as well. But ironically, she wanted me to continue with my life even at her most critical point. That choice likely will always sting, for the rest of my life, but at least I'm trying not to let it become the focus around which my life revolves around now. Don't know why I felt like sharing, guess it feels good to let it go out into the world. Better than bottling it up inside and letting it rot you from within.

That was a lovely & touching story . Shannon managed to unify & give hope, self esteem, confidence and the ability to heal through alternative avenues via BME. Without him creating BME, I legitimately would not be the person I am today or likely alive. You both have managed to touch & be a part of so many peoples lives directly or indirectly (as is my case as I had never met or spoke with your brother personally). That being said, I will always be grateful to the impact he had upon me & the world in general. He is and always will be missed by so many.

how did i never know you are Shannon's brother? have kept up with watching you in the arm wrestling world and have a lot of respect for you man. just the way you handle yourself and your personality you have always seemed like the nicest guy.
when i was growing up i didnt really fit in with anyone around me, somehow i discovered BME and found my people i guess lol, your brother was one of the few people that really inspired me in my life and i probably would have never got into tattooing if it wasnt for Shannon. the way he treated everyone with respect has always been my example for how i try to treat people.
i lost my brother in a wreck a few days before my 20th birthday, he was 23. i know what its like man, big brothers are supposed to be there forever and we both lost ours way too soon. hope you know yours really did change the world in a small way for more people than you probably realize. if it wasnt for him and the work he did i dont know what i would have ended up doing with my life. have always thought of him as a personal hero, even if it sounds odd. never knew he was supermans brother tho! hope i get the chance to meet you someday, growing up i felt that way about your brother and it broke my heart when i learned he had passed.
BTW, i dont know if the person you got the glider from was someone special so you dont want to touch it again but if somehow the stars align and you are around my area i would be honored to fix that up for you and you wont have to worry about it fading, fingers are hard to do but with the right technique they will stay solid for life.

I never knew about this video until now. Shannon was an amazing person who I'm incredibly fortunate to have met. He is the sole reason I pursued a career in the body modification world. I miss him and his blog posts dearly. I would never have become the person I was if it wasn't for BME and the people I met through that site.

I just got back into D&D after many years. I have been dungeon mastering my own game now for the past year. I have the original Dragonlance module of which you speak that includes Raistlin and Caramon Majere. I also have the first story that featured the two brothers from Dragon Magazine.

Armbet is doing great things for Alpha Empire. Feels good to no longer be the “newbie” on the team. We’re getting new pullers every week through armbet! Whenever you come southwest, drop by to train with us.

I never knew you played tabletop roleplaying games. I enjoyed immersing myself in the mythology, and so I knew right away who you were talking about. The game gave me amazing friends and got me through some tough times. I was an awkward, different kid. I had trouble due to a disability I have, a hearing one. Through the game, I made friends and we enjoyed it through highschool. From there I grew socially. I stopped playing for a few years, and then as I got a little older, I picked up the game again. It's a way that my friends and I now still stay connected all these years later, not letting our paths in life separate us too much. It's a wonderful, social, creative game. It is very cool to hear that you, as a person who served their country and a world class armwrestler (and human) once played the game. We were ostracized back then because of it.
Funny enough, at a point in my life where I was lacking direction, I picked up armwrestling with the High Hookers around 2003. That put me on a path to where I eventually met THE girl, had a daughter, and set myself up in life. I retired from the sport in about 2013, but I still watch as a fan. Shannon spoke of community. Devon, you understand it just as well. Armwrestling is a community. The tabletop gamers is also a community. It's a wonderful thing in our human experience. Cheers to you.

I really like the tattoo and why you got it. Shannon was really impossible to describe. I hope you do feel him or that he has become a part of you, although it's certainly not equal to being able to bear hug or play chess. I hope his daughter and your kids are close.

sorry for the loss of a great man and loved one. I know the feeling personally I think its awesome you played a fighter and cleric because thats what I played. but my cleric was a 2 handed using battle cleric that wiorshipped gorum the god of war and I used a lot of chaotic spells.
