Are you wondering how to set the proper tamping depth for you new espresso tamper? This palm tamper for the Breville Barista Express is a great way to improve consistency. Tamping depth is a very important factor in consistent espresso extraction. In order to set this depth properly, use this simple exercise to ensure that you are tamping to a level that will not cause the espresso puck to come in contact with the shower screen. Proper spacing between the puck and shower screen is very important for both the cleanliness and performance of your espresso machine.

The Sage machines use a 54mm Portafilter. This tamper is 53mm. Surely this will leave a 0.5mm non-tamped zone around the edge?
They are designed specifically for Breville baskets, this isn’t a worry. Just like how 58mm tampers are actually 58.4mm
Use the Razor trimming tool and hold it on the edge of the tamper. Adjust the tamper tool to match it perfectly.
yep!
Exactly right
That's too low. It removes way too much coffee and the depth is unnecessary low. Meaning that depending on the grind size you may not even be able to get 18g into the portafilter at that depth
@@the_kingd0m I dont think it is too low, it actually makes a higher puck than the 7.5mm in this video
I really don't understand the razor tool. If you use it after tamping its just going to damage the puck and cause channeling....
I have never been quite satisfied with the coffee flavor from my 870xl. I do experiment a lot and it keeps getting better. I purchased the distributor like yours and finally all the hard work and testing has paid off. It appears I was not getting my tamping correct nor my distribution, as now I get perfect pulls every time and they taste fantastic! Thank you!
You may be amused that I found a use for the razor trimming tool - I used it as a template/guide for setting the depth of my puck tamper. I put the top of the razor on the top of the puck and adjusted until the razor edge came against the base of the puck. The depth came out to ~.75mm as well. I like your approach better, but had to share a use for that razor...
I think this neglects that the coffee will expand and I've found setting to this method the puck sticks to the shower head and issues ensue. I would take your tamp a little further to avoid this and it can even vary by coffee type as some expand more than others.
I watched a video from Aju's Cafe and I think he has the best way , you just adjust tamp till the razor tool no longer scraped coffee :)
It's good to have this technique around for folks who lost the razor tool or who have a different espresso machine which didn't come with one.
Thank You!!! My 1st shot pulled after following this method was SOO MUCH better than my usual shots! Tamping was one of my flawed variables... now as I "Dial In" my shot with Appropriate Grind Size, Preferred Flavor Ratio, and Time of Brew... I should get ONE HELL OF A NICE SHOT!!! Thanks!!
you can confirm your method by checking the depth sets by the Breville razor dose trimming tool
I have just measured mine and it is 7mm and not 7.5 mm....
I found the easiest way to check is to simply put the tamper on the portafilter coming with the machine after you finish prepping. As long as the line between the silver and black part of the tamper is aligned with the basket/you cant see the metal part, you are good.
You made my life happier. Very helpful information.
Ugh! Thank you for this! I’ve been having a hard time with this tool. I couldn’t get either side right. But I’m going to try this!
Appreciate all the videos on the Breville! They've been abundantly helpful in helping me make better espresso. One question: how did you program the machine so the Filter Size button turns the grinder on and off? Thanks!
It will turn the grinder off, but not on, yours will do it too!
your videos are always very practical. Thanks a bunch
Thanks for the measurement! Appreciate the shared efficiency, subscribed!
This was very helpful even though I have a different tamper/distributor and machine. I have the bambino plus and a picked up a rebranded combo tamper and bottomless portafilter for 35$ and this video got me pretty close to where I needed to be on the first shot. I do have the stock Breville basket in so that might have been a help. Thanks.
Again - * * * * * 5 star review from me. Such useful information.
Very informative video . I just got my palm tamper I am about to use it.
Brilliant.... Going to check mine to ensure its correct
Thanks, this was EXTREMELY helpful. 👍
Extremely helpful. Thank you.
Easiest way to do this is just measure it next to the Razor tool you will get exact depth u need
Great video! Any idea when this tamper will be back in stock?
Great video on things I do use. I have the same tamper and love it but always wondered how to get it right. Kinda eyeballing it to the built in tamper and dosing tool that comes with the unit, but find it inconsistent. So how much coffee are you using and what is your grind setting? Also, i see you dose first, then tamp. I have seen others do the opposite and was always confused :-)
A bit difficult to see exactly how you’re adjusting the tool. I have the same one but struggled to see exactly what you’re doing unfortunately.
You loosen the collar, unscrew the tamper as far as you need, then tighten the collar
Thanks for the video! Very helpful
Very helpfull thank you
thanks, I just notice i have a shower screen imprint and I have the same 2-in-1 leveler tamper
Excellent! This is exactly what I need.
One question though: what is the dosage that you used? It appears that you have premeasured the beans. I have found the Barista Express is not very consistent with its dosage, varying up to more than half a gram.
For adjusting the depth of the tamper side, I think the quicker way is to use the "Razor" tool that comes with the machine. It is set to the proper depth.
Thanks for the video.
I'm using 17.5gr dosed directly into an empty hopper, then I grund until empty. That is the most accurate method I have found on this machine. The razor tool is useful, but measures a specific volume, not a specific weight, which leads to problems in determining brew ratio
My advice is to use the Tamper that comes with de Breville to finish up the Tampering( after using the distributor)..you will get a more compact puck.
For 18gr of grinded coffe this is my configuration.
Grinder set up: 5
Grinding time :17 seconds
18gr of Coffee
Naked Portafilter.
10 seconds of preinfussion and 25 seconds of brewing.
I measured the Razor with a caliper/vernier and it seems to be around 6.6mm so I've set the tamp to the same height
Hello! You have been teaching so much since I've received this machine. I went ahead and set the tamper depth but when I lock in the portafilter, it doesn't show the dots of the shower screen, just the circle that's in the middle. I hope that makes sense! Do I still need to keep adjusting my tamper until the puck is completely flattened with no indentations of that circle in the shower screen? Thank you!
love your videos
Hey
Bought the sam thing just a different brand, wanted to ask does the ground coffee get stuck on the sides when using distribution?
Brilliant, thank you!
This video was very interesting. But I have a request 🤓 Can you tell me how deep the razor is? (This value is equal to 7.5 mm according to your suggestion). I'm a designer but I do not have access to a razor. (Although in another video of you I found out about razor problems). Thank you for your response 🙏🏽
Is there a technique to removi g the back cover off, without causing damage?, yours seems to pull off, easily!
Shouldn’t be any special technique, just make sure you’re twisting the right way!
Would it be the same depth for a single shot basket?
Is this method good for any system? I have heard tamping pressure affects flow extraction. Also, will this be the same for pressurized vs unpressurized baskets?
Thanks for the great video. Can this work for Breville Barista Pro?
Yup! Exact same portafilter
Hi. What is the diameter of this tamper? 53mm?
53/54mm
Made for Breville 54mm baskets
Thank you. Dou you have a suggested depth for the bambino?
Same technique regardless of machine :)
I just bought this on amazon. What bit on the tamper do you twist?
I hope you’re joking.
Have you ever tried using just the distributor in heard a few people try this with good results the folks over at whole latte love use just the jack leveler
The distributor side of this tool has the exact same functionality as the Jack leveler, so yes!
Just like the Whole Latte Love folks I dont even tamp anymore. I simply set the distributor to the correct depth and spin until there is no resistance. Perfect, consistent results every time
Lifestyle Lab are you still setting it at 7.5mm ruffly
Yup, I left it there the whole time I had the Barista express in my kitchen. Now I use the Appartamento day to day, and have used the same process shown here to set the depth for that distributor
Lifestyle Lab that’s awesome my buddy has the apartmento it’s a beautiful machine.
Lifestyle Lab that’s awesome my buddy has the apartmento it’s a beautiful machine.
@lifestylelab_ I just bought my matow dual head and I cannot unscrew or adjust the tamper side. Is that a product defect. I can see you were able to adjust yours. Mine won’t budge. Is this a dud!? 🥴
Should definitely be able to unscrew. Make sure you’re holding the correct part steady while trying to turn
thanks
Thank you for the videos. Very very helpful. Would the tamper height be the same for the single dose basket (7.5 mm)?
Yes, you want to maintain that same gap from the shower screen. You will just need to find what dose works for your coffee in the single basket
@@LifestyleLab_ Thank you so much for the speedy reply. Makes sense.
Hi will this setting work for the bambino plus also? Thank you in asvance
Yup!
Hi, you only adjusted the tamping height, so tamping force is out of the equation for this tool?
Correct, an "ideal tamping force" has shown to be mostly nonsense. As long as you are consistent, and tamping far enough to not have the puck contact the show screen before brewing, dialing in will be a breeze
Nice!
Hi... does it mean the tamping depth is more important than the tamping pressure itself?
It means that CONSISTENCY is more important than tamping pressure, and that tamping depth is an important factor people often overlook
Revelation !!!
Can u do a video for a 58mm portafilter?
The same technique can be used :)
it's not available at amazon atm and I can't find it elsewhere. I have a breville bambino. breville always says their portafilters are 54mm. But they are 53mm right? As you also used a 53mm Leveling tool for your Breville.
Also another question: The palm tamper you linked, is only a leveler. The one in your video is kind of a 2 in 1. It has both sides. A leveler and a tamping side. Where can I get one of those 53mm? Thank you very much in advance. Greetings from Germany.
Hi ColoSon, unfortunately this exact 2 in 1 is only currently available in the US, Canada, and UK. I've linked a similar distribution tool for other countries. GOOD NEWS IS, you do not need the tamper side. I simply adjust my distributor to the correct height and use it to both distribute and tamp. Many many baristas take this approach! See my Appartamento video, I am using only a distributor there :)
Great content! This method works great for me. However, I have run into a new issue that I’m hoping you can help me understand. I bought super freshly roasted beans from a different local roaster. And all of a sudden 18 g of ground coffee does not fill up the Porta filter as much as the beans I have used in the past. Does it make sense that with some coffee you may have to readjust the depth of the tamper? Or pre-weigh say 20 g instead of 18g?
Yes! Some coffees will grind very differently from others depending on a variety of factors.
It's good to note that the coarser you grind, the more space 18gr will take up. Meaning that if your portafilter seems underfilled with 18gr, you can grind coarser to get adequate tamping pressure. If you do this and the flow is now too fast, you can also return to the old grind setting and increase the dose as you suggested
Thank you, I had the same issue with my latest batch of beans.
I ended up getting the matow palm tamper before watching this video. Do you think it will do well?
Yes! They're basically the exact same
Awesome, just got a Bambino Plus for sale at $399 and going to try this method you posted for palm tamper!
Good deal! Great machine for the price :)
What should we lookout for when ordering a palm tamper? I would like to order this one but see it's out of stock in the UK.
Luckily it is a very simple product, just ensure you are getting the proper size for your portafilter!
@@LifestyleLab_ thanks to confirm its 53mm?
@@NoelKriegler some will list as 53mm or 54mm, but either will work
mind=blown
You didn't mention dose size?
Dose will depend on your machine's portafilter size, and desired brew ratio. I find the 54mm Breville portafilters work best with somewhere between 16.5 and 17.5 grams
@@LifestyleLab_ I typically use 18 grams.
Do you have to have the portafilter all the way to the right on the group head? Mine is new and pretty tight to turn all the way in
Yes, as the portafilter turns, it is lifted as it locks into place. If you do not move all the way to the right, the positioning of the puck relative to the shower screen will not be consistent
@@LifestyleLab_ Out comes the hammer, in that case ...
Melanie Barton I had this same problem at first too. Found out my dose was a bit too much. The puck was touching the shower head as I locked the portafilter in place. Double check your dose with the Breville blade.
Proper tamping depth, yes. Proper compaction, nope. Resistance and compaction should end at the appropriate depth. A proper depth is is pointless if you have a loosely packed puck.
Absolutely, need to dose correctly for your basket :)
I've got the distributor/tamping tool in my cart. As for the funnel, my son 3D printed me one a year or more ago. Works great!
Hi. Interesting video. I have a couple of issues here. First is the tamping weight and distance is directly related to the dose of coffee you use. Eg 16g v 18g will result in different tamped levels in the basket unrelated to shower screen. Second is that even different brands of coffee at a similar dose and grind tend to have a marginal difference so you’d need to recalibrate every new coffee. I just use distributer and adjust to gut feel and also to vary tamp amount to get longer shorter shot when the ideal grind setting is between settings.
I dial in MANY different coffees every month. As long as you are using a dose that is not too low (causing the tamper to not make contact), you will be able to dial in using grind size. A standard "ideal tamping pressure" of 25lbs or whatever it was has long been debunked as a myth. CONSISTENCY is what's important. But you are absolutely right, if your grinder is stepped and you can not precisely dial in using grind alone, slightly adjusting tamping pressure can help you dial in between grind settings. The same thing could also be done by varying dose while keeping tamping depth the same.
For me, I am too lazy to adjust. So i will adjust my coffee weights. For different beans, i will adjust my grind size.
Very well done! This is the only way to set a distribution tool to the minimum depth. Should you trust the dime rule for clearance, simply put a dime over the ground bed, lock in the portafilter, then set the distribution tool to dime imprint level. Bang, it’s done. Lastly, adjust the dose weight to reach this level. When done, adjust grind size for perfect extraction. Compensate weight of the dose by the roast level. Increase dose with light roast, decrease with dark roast. Success guaranteed! I have never change the depth of tool fore the last 3 years and probably never forever.
No matter the brand of your machine, size of basket, batch of beans, follow this procedure and you will be in business.
The Breville came with a razor tool. Wouldn’t that be the correct depth (tamp until the razor doesn’t shave the puck)?
the depth would change with dose though, so that might prove a slight issue
@@Narezaath
And how's his method (in the video) immune to dose?
@@itsm3th3b33 I'm wondering the same thing
I bet the depth of the razor is also around 7.5 mm
@@Guapogiboy
No doubt. But the trial and error method suggested in this video is a long cut way to get to that 7.5mm, do you agree?
When using the distribution side. I noticed a lot of coffee grounds gets stuck where the black and silver part meets. Any idea on how to remedy this? The distribution part is at the minimum setting so I can’t adjust it anymore
I had that problem with beans that were particularly oily, especially when grinding finer. The stuck grounds never amounted to more than .25 grams, though, and didn't seem to affect the shot.
Some of these distributor/tampers from Amazon have the depth levels printed/markings on the side of the flat end of the tamper itself.
Why not use the depth of the razor, included with the machine, to set the depth of the distributor
I think that tool only recently started shipping with the Breville Barista Express maybe like a year and a half ago
I actually did measure my tamp side using the razor depth but you want the distributer side at minimum to leave enough room between the the grounds and the distributer end to get an even distribution if set too deep into the portafilter it will distribute the grounds in too tight leaving the grounds uneven within the puck causing an uneven extraction plus other than distributing and leveling the grounds the
whole point of the depth on the razor is for the correct tamping depth and i believe it applies the same pressure as using 30lbs of pressure w a regular tamp.
@@johnathanl2663 bit longer than that, I've had mine since Sept 2017
This logic doesn't make sense to me. Isn't it common to use 30lb of pressure or somewhere around there. Tamping it down how it's being done in this still means that the grounds aren't as tamped as they could be. It might be consistent, but I thought the entire point of tamping is to get it as compacted as possible. Or is that completely wrong? It just doesn't seem right to me compared to something like a loaded tamper which is guaranteed doing that.
Like you said, consistency is key. If you set the depth correctly, and dose properly for your basket, you will be very consistent and apply an adequate amount of pressure.
@@LifestyleLab_ I guess if you have your dosing down then that probably does work perfectly every time.
I have been struggling with that since I switched to dark roasts. People seem to recommend using larger doses, but I find the exact opposite. The same weight of dark roast goes so much above the rim that it makes it hard to distribute completely even, which leaves one half of the puck always lower than the other.
Which is user error I guess. But I just don't want to lower the dose anymore and get less coffee than I have. It still tastes great, but just has like 1 tiny little spurt of coffee out of the naked portafilter every time that makes me know there is some form of channeling even though it's small.
Hi my friend! If I buy this crema tamper... Shoud I still use a stirrer WDT technique? As I understand crema tamper distributes coffee ground too.
Thanks for your answer and time.
Regards from Mexico.
Yes, WDT is far more effective than a distributor. WDT + Tamp. No need to also distribute
I finally bought a palm tamper/distributor. OMG what a difference it makes. Thanks for providing the info. Really makes it easy to get GREAT SHOT.
Thanks for making the video. I just got the distribution tool and wanna make sure I'm doing things correctly.
Hello. Quick question. I use fresh coffee everytime but my extraction time from the moment I press the button to get around 36g out is about 15 or 16 seconds. I put 18g of coffee in the grinder and I have the internal grinder also set to the minimum setting so i cant go any finer. Is that just the coffee or is there anything else going on? Thank you. 👍
That is way too fast of an extraction. Try:
1. Increase to 19g of coffee
2. Tamper harder
3. Check your grinder for defects - spread the ground coffee on a paper towel and check the consistency of the grind. If there are to many coarse bits your grinder may need servicing. Or buy a better grinder.
4. Try a different roast. Darker roasts should grind finer.
@@itsm3th3b33 Thanks for your reply. I will try 19g. It's a fairly new machine so i would hope all is well with the grinder but i will check that also. 👍👍
You can adjust the top plate of the grinder inside the burr grinder; default is at 6 and it’s a range from 1-10; where 1 is the finest setting.
Try using freshly roasted coffee. If it is too stale (older than couple of months), it becomes unusable.
Thanks every one. I use very fresh coffee every time but still not getting a long enough extraction. I have the internal grinder set to its finest setting and still not slow enough.
So with the Distributor set to minimum it’s function as almost nil. Would it not be better after the Tamper is dial in to adjust the Distributor to be more functional? Most of the European or American Distributors are more than $100. The Chinese are under $50 for comparison. Just to be clear your concept is dead on for the final product. Thanks good video, Kevin
I've been looking to get this tamper/distribution tool on Amazon for a few days but it's been sold out (for UK customers atleat). Does anyone know where else you can pick one up?
I know the distributor. He's dealing with some supply issues due to global events. They will be back in stock within the next couple weeks
I've been looking for some time now but it's not been available. I'll keep checking back I guess 😉
Very glad to hear it’ll be back in stock soon!
It's now back in stock in Canada and the US.
UK might be a little while longer apparently...
@@LifestyleLab_ thanks for the update. I've looked at cost, and really with post and exchange rate I might just order from US 👍
Great content! This looks like a great tamper! Thanks!
This was very helpful. Thank you. Question. Would this require re-calibration with each batch of coffee since differences in beans and roast times will result in different volumes for the same dose weight?
Keep the depth setting the same, adjust your flow rate using grind size
If the grind size steps are too big which is usually the case on a BBE you can make tiny adjustments so it tamps harder/softer or you can up/lower the dose of beans. It's all depends on what you're looking for and what tastes good to you and others
God - unbelievably easy to do, and what a fantastic result! Just pulled a perfect shot (with a bit of doubt before - sorry!)
I've experienced different variantions of dosing when it comes to the density of the coffee been. Sometimes its messes up the depth when you are used to a high dense bean then decided to switch to a low dense bean, which in turn takes up more volume, so I have to lower my dosing for lower dense beans. So looking for advice on this.
You can change your dose slightly like you're doing to adjust for these variations, but the main variable for dialing in should be grind size. If you are having trouble fitting 18gr in the basket, grind finer. If that results in too slow, or no flow, then reduce the dose.
Following!! I have fresh beans from my local roastery, and was wondering what grind size you'd use for 18g dose

Hello friend, do you need a free tamper , i can send you one to try ,thanks
How many grams of coffee is in this shot? 18 or 17? Thanks for your answer.
Did you ever get a reply for this question? It seems tamping down to the level he described would result in different puck densities depending on the amount of coffee. I have been using 18g and still getting too quick a shot - I have walked my grind setting all the way down to 2 and still too fast? -
@@matthewwilson3078 hey Matt, I had this same problem with my breville smart grinder, I couldn’t get a fine enough grind at low settings. I opened up the grinder and took out the inner burr and made the grind size smaller, he has a video on this. I adjusted the internal burr to #2. Now my steps between grind sizes is less drastic of a change which helps dialing in shots. I grind on a setting between 15-10 now because less than that will start to choke my machine. I hope this helps!
Does the tamper work for Rocket Appartamento portafilter (58mm instead of 54)?
No, in my rocket Appartamento review video I do link to a 58mm distributor though :) ua-cam.com/video/NkXE8zs-cD8/v-deo.html
What about using too little pressure would that be an issue? Because using less or more coffee changes everything!
Need to dose the appropriate volume for you basket :) 18g may not be the correct dose for every coffee, depending on roast level and origin the densities can vary drastically! If you're undertamping, you need to increase dose or get a smaller basket
Hmmm I don't really think it's that simple. What the tamper allows you to do is tamp consistently and level, for a given bean/grind setting. Setting to avoid contact with the screen (pre-extraction) isn't necessarily going to be the magic setting. And of course, like other people have pointed out, the puck will expand during extraction, and will still contact the screen. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, and will certainly make the puck come out of the portafilter more easily.
Saying that the shower screen will 'scorch' the beans is complete nonsense.
Thank you I was using my distributor/leveller and I tightened it too rigidly. Now coffee is jammed in the threads and I can't unscrew it. Any suggestions?
well the Breville included a razor that flatten the ground coffee to the correct level why not use it to set our depth lol
You could to set tamper depth, but it should absolutely not actually be used as part of your daily prep. I have a video on why
My I ask, where is 7.5 mm?
Thanks
You would need to measure it like I did, or follow the instructions in the video with your machine
have you noticed when using 18.5 or 19g dose, using this distribution tool, you'll end up pressing down on it since the shallowest setting still would be too high?
The 54mm Brevilles definitely max out at just over 18gr with most coffee roasts
@@LifestyleLab_ but even at 18g, sometime i feel the disti end up pressing down on the grinds first before you an use it. otherwise, it'll just get messy
It wont impact the quality of your shot, I actually ONLY use the distributor side to do all the tamping. Just make sure you are rotating the distributor from the second it touches the grinds, and all the way as you press down as to avoid tamping in a star shape from the distributor blades (that would affect shot quality)
A consistent accurate dose weight is very important. A half gram difference in dose weight which will change dose volume which will require a different the depth setting.
cdvax11 well since I started using WDT method, 18g dose no longer had issues when putting the disti side down. Breville built in grinder had way too much clumps which caused my question in the first place. Now issue solved.
I can’t get the link to the dosing funnel to work. I mean, it works, but it takes me to a tamping mat. Can someone tell me which brand the one used in the video is? Thanks!
Couldn’t you just tamp regularly with a normal tamp, then place the tamping side on, them screw in the exact amount of space left in the portafilter?
Can you please tell me what is the best distributor size I should use with my 58mm Portafilter? Thank you 😊
I tried your method and it sucks. puck wasnt tamped enough.
Then you’re not dosing properly for your basket :)
Thank you for your unnecessarily negative comment Andrej
Great ! Thank you. Any thoughts on a Flair 58mm Flair basket
would you use this same process for other coffee machine ? thanks
Your video is relevant for any SBE/BBE user to this days, perfect tip.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Will you ever need to change this again say if you change beans?
How many grams of coffee are you grinding into the portafiller? 18g?
