Why two diodes in series in 4 level and 5 level inverters?

in a four level NPC what is the need of connecting two diodes in series?

it is a religious thing worn by Hindu (Religion) Brahmins (caste) from South India( I think only people from the Indian state of Tamilnadu)

Its called a gopi, similar to the dot worn by indian women bit different in that this is a symbol of devotion to lord Vishnu as compared to the red dot signifying marriage in the case of women
