@@patrickmahoney9893 choosing to keep strings on to have a thumpy, dark, or mid-focused tone isn't 'cliche', it's functional. There's a reason the dead motown tone has stuck around til today, and imo clanky, bright, and nasaly tones are far more contrived and overused in genres in which they don't work by modern bassists. Listen to Sean Hurley's playing and tell me he's 'cliche' - he never changes strings unless they break and breaks them in with vaseline haha
Frank is the Best, but it would have been nice to hear each set of strings with a couple of tone settings to show the range that's available with each set. For example, it seems to me that the stainless set might be capable of a more mellow result with the tone rolled back, but will need to spend money to see if that's true.
The balanced sets have a major problem, I bought two sets because they were in a introductory sale when it came here. First set was really a higher tension set with balanced sound with plenty of output. But the problem was when the E string suddenly became dull, dead and rubbery, suddenly. It was a bummer, changed the strings and used rotosounds for couple months. Then when it was time to change again, I really enjoyed the sound but after few hours the E became dull and dead again in the same day. What probably happens is that those two layers of wrap wire don’t hold and the lower one slips. I think it is some kind of wire slippage. I’d recommend you avoid them. I do not have more than 10 days of play time in those. I hope someone from Markbass also sees this because I want proper working sets, the sound was enjoyable.
@@_imago man, I haven't seen anyone else complain about this but it was a total bummer for me. For the first pack I thought it was my mistake but same happening with only few hours of play time, I understood something was off. The first set went for a week, for the second set I put them at the morning or noon time and I enjoyed the bright zing, suddenly getting dead E sound at around 10 pm, even after not touching the strings for some time was a total joykiller. I'd go with their conventional wrap wire strings if you want to be sure. I also want to tell you that there is no burr on the saddle or the nut, no other string had this weird problem and I even put them into ultrasonic cleaner, to see if it was any big gunk which got into the windings but no. Usually string get their zing back after a session in ultrasonic cleaner with rubbing alcohol after getting all the oil and gunk out but the E was still dead while others havig that brand new string zing.
If you don't sharply crimp bend the string for the tuning peg slot hole and then cut the string they will de-core; all strings will do this to a lesser or greater degrees. Just measure around 5 inches past the tuning peg then bend 1 inch short at 4 inches. This will lock the outer wrap and inner core securing any further deformation that deadens the string when tuning. You'll get about 2.5 wraps if you want more just add half an inch but, bent at 4 inches is fine for Fender Jazz, MusicMan, and Laklands.
@@nyarlothep Thanks for the info and I always give the strings a kink before installing them, including these two sets of markbass balanced strings. I also checked the official markbass website after writing these comments and they do have a special report page specifically for balanced sets.
I really enjoyed Frank Itt's Guitar Summit Masterclass. Mr. Bassface is a really chill guy. Seeing him play e.g. Tower of power from only 2 m away was very cool. 😁 I am not sure if I wanna try the Markbass Strings, but their lightweight MB58r cabinets really impressed me. I will probably choose one of them instead of the carbon cabinets of another italian company. 😁
I would like to have heard more play on the G string. I think the 2nd and 3rd sets were only EAD strings. The reason I mention this is because I am trying to find a set with less "ping" on the G string. Typically use 105-45 sets. Thought maybe a heavier gauge on the G might help?
I would really really like to see a shootout between the COATED bass strings on the market! I've been using Elixer nanowebs for years. Mainly because these coated strings are slickier and smoother to the fingers than normal uncoated round wounds. They also don't need to be changed as often because the sound is kept longer. In the recent years more brands started making coated strings, so how do they compare? I know that the earlier polyweb Elixer coatings starts to peel off after a while (even faster when playing with a pick) an I heard that the DR coated strings ( in various colours) do the same. What about the Markbass Longevo, Warwicks EMP coated, Ernie Ball coated, DAddario XTB (and others) ? Tested for: - sound & longevity of it - longevity of the coating itself - fingerfeel / slickyness Such a shootout would be very interesting, I can't find anything like it on the web yet 😎
I tried the Markbass Yellow Precision bass in Mannheim on Saturday and it the bridge was not properly connected to ground (or some other grounding issue). So I wonder what Markbass actually check on those instruments that come from the same factory as Squier Sonic Precision / Bronco bass (since they claim they check them once more..)
This is a long shot ! Am looking for a video of a funk slap bass solo i saw but lost.. player had Asian or filipino appearance with eye glasses, crew cut (possibly bald not 100% sure) he was playing outdoors, green grass plants and no background instruments. Bass was quite small and didn't have tuning keys. If anyone knows or has the link please reply greatly appreciated :)
Well, my experience is not good with the coated ones, - compared with Elixir's. The feel, the sound was not good at all..... ;-) Markbass Longevo 5 045-130 Stainless
These overpriced strings have sat at my local Guitar Center for ages and they keep lowering the price to try and sell some. I'll wait until they're $5. Reviews haven't been good. The basses they've put out have been pretty terrible too. MB should just stick to amps before they ruin their reputation.
Frank Bass Face Itt, you've got to love it!
Theres nothing like a fresh set of bass strings. I would honestly change strings every 2 weeks if I could afford it
I couldn't agree more
you sound like you havent been playing long
Pro tip: Wash your hands before you play.

You should just invest in an ultrasound bath and clean them
Life long DR fan here, but these sound like they are worth a try ! Thanks for the film and info 🎉
Frank is a groove machine! 👌
THANK YOU Frank! What a great way to end the week!
Frank can be my dad! What a demonstration of skill and precision!
aaah, a pro doing his own thing, zero fret buzz, only clean notes, thank you Gregor!

I started using them a couple of years ago. Great strings.
Frank has a great groove, amazing sound 🤘
Frank does the "Funk Face" better than just about anybody.
main reason I watch these videos \m/
Thanks

Thanks for sharing Gregor much appreciated 🙏🇬🇧🎵🎶🎸

Oh damn, thanks for sharing this. I just ordered a set of balanced 5 string 45s, I'm now thinking I should cancel that and switch to nickels.

They do sound good. Frank is the king of the bass face without a doubt.
What strings I’m here to see Franks bass face!
FrankyFunk is making the funk face while slapping , I love it ! 😀
When I win the lottery I'm going to hire Frank to just sit in my house all day playing tasteful basslines.
frank makes it look so easy
I prefer a round bottom
Great for slapping!
Don't we all
Wait are we still talking bass strings... ?
Bass Face Supreme!!!
I recently read the price tag - I needed a doctor and oxygen - I'm on the road to recovery
when's the last time iv'e changed strings .... OH GOD IT's PASSED TIME!
If you looked up Bass Face in the dictionary there will be a picture of this guy 💯

I had those grooves on my stingray and they died super quickly, good sound while they were new though.

All hail King Frank!

His name is Robson Albuquerque. The video isn’t on our channel anymore after copyright issues. But you can probably find it still on his channel
i have it, i feel them abrassive for the fingers, do not know why
Wait, is Frank Gregor's dad again?
Wait, no fair. Frank Itt could make rubber bands sound good...😂
but what about durability?
Must say that they sound really awesome to me, but I don't remember which ones exactly🙈
They sound like Rotosounds. And d’Addarios. And Elites. And DR.
Harley Benton Steels are really good and very cheap (their Nickels are more on the meh side)
Too bad the Groove strings aren't offered in short scale. I don't play long scale basses anymore.

bass strings are a scam. they cost so much and after a while they just sound like crap
Kann mir nicht helfen, aber ich mag Markbass nicht.
Why frowny face? It's not that difficult. Show us some speed metal and we might be impressed.
It’s a natural response to funk, not speed or difficulty.
@Abrahamic.Design it's the same face for everything 🤣
