John wrote this song because he was mad about the rich kids getting out of the Vietnam draft by their parents sending them to Canada and the poor ones having to go .
This is a protest song against the Vietnam war. Send the underprivileged kids to fight and die while the elite get rich off of it. CCR is the bomb. No pun intended, really!😅😅😅
COSMOS FACTORY ,by them is said to contain the most greatest hits ever of any artists. My favorite is I put. A Spell on You and Nighttime I'd the Right Time. Been a fan from the start in 68 with Suzie Q. Up around the Bend, Traveling Band Proud Mary , Lodi were all hit songs. I heard it Thru the Grapevine is great and more. Their in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and sure deserve it. John Fogerty wrote many, produced maybe almost all he's incredible.
Not so much a rite of passage, but in the 1960s, during the Vietnam War, there was the draft - and a lot of people couldn't understand that not everyone wanted to go and fight. Great song and review... have you tackled their songs "Proud Mary" and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" yet?
Yes, I think he references military families where each generation is expected to follow the last. (star spangled eyes). But also talks about the draft, during the vietnam war, when your number came up in the lottery you had to go serve. Some rich kids got out of it by being in school or by having some sort of (made up) medical issue. A lot of people were pissed at how many rich kids were pulling strings, and meanwhile poor kids who had no strings to pull and didn't want to go to Vietnam had to go anyway or else go underground "drop out" or run away to Canada. That decision really split up a generation to me mind. A generational wound separating those who served and those who stayed. I know/knew people on both sides and boy was it a bitter taste, years after.etc etc...!
The CCR 'deep cut' you need to hear is "Long As I Can See the Light." 'Nuff said, Biz; that song is _deepest_ blue. As for full-album, I'd vote for _Willy and the Poor Boys_ because it's as 'roots' as you can get in recorded music.
I feel the same with you. I come from a military family, too. It was expected of the sons to enlist when they came of age to carry on the American pride and service. I feel like the 60’s changed that for many because of the whole anti-war movement however many families still hold to the tradition. Nowadays women are enlisting as well because they can be more than just a nurse in the military. The sixties changed America in many ways.
Love that song! They had the Draft till 1973 ,you had no choice to go in the military when the Gov said to! (Same with WWII, my Dad was drafted ,he was a Staff Sergeant & a crew chief with the U S Army Air corp 523rd Fighter Bomber Squadron, he received eight bronze stars with four oak leaf clusters!
Yeah....I got mad when I heard about rich kids getting out of the draft as well. My brother joined the navy to "avoid" the draft. He just didn t want to go into the army. John caught ALL of this in this song! Then ....John wrote the song >>>>being there
I am so glad you’re back on CCR now remember Bis I’m 77 remember me the queen Liz the queen and let me tell you fortunate son that was there in the Vietnam war and if you watched any of the movies you know opportune or any of those movies you’re going to hear this song any war movie fabulous course one of my favorites from from Clearwater if I put a spell on you that’s how I met Billy who iPad went down 44 years I became a widow at 36 and I met him right after that and we’re still together glad to see you glad you’re back on the channel and you know play that music and you know my favorite girl Etta James all my love Liz the queen
Love CCR - I know how much you love AC DC (which I do too) but they are not the only Aussie rockers and good music - and if you like Fogerty's voice you will like Jimmy Barnes either solo or when he was with 'Cold Chisel' - they all came up together at the same time - Cold Chisel, AC DC - we had great rock bands (Pub rock we called it) CCR are the same timeframe with Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple - My teens - Jimmy Barnes still releasing fantastic music today
"I Put A Spell On You" was written and initially recorded in 1956 by the inimitable Screamin' Jay Hawkins. CCR did a creditable covering it more than two decades later.
Hippies in the 60s loved this song. This was an anti war song. More importantly it was an anti draft song. People were waiting in dread of the number be called.
‘ With lyrics penned by John Fogerty, “Fortunate Son” takes a jab at the rich & privileged who were exempt from being drafted into the military because of their status. It’s a song for the everyday, common man who disagreed with the war but may have been forced to fight in it when their number was called ‘
You're not wrong, but if you notice, this song is in almost every war movie. I think it's also got so much to do with not being a fortunate son which meant, you had to go off to war, which SUCKS! Great review Biz!
Please react to lynyrd skynyrd..Mississippi kid...and another band another genre snotty nose rez kids...indigenous resistance or real deadly or uncle Rico...Thank you... every man's band #skynyrd!!
And Donald Trump, the fortunate son draft dodger, would play this at his rallies. He and his organizers apparently had no clue what this song was about.
This was definitely a song about Vietnam. Senators sons were getting out of going (George Bush) millionares were sending their children to colleges and the rest got drafted. Yea, It ain't me either. Those with the star spangled eyes never had a son come home crippled to a mediocre welcome. The way we treated our veterans in this country was despicable.
Stick with the deep cuts; you might not end up with the biggest channel, but you'll have one of the best. Fortunate Son is a great song. Specifically it's a Vietnam protest song although there's a lot of universal truth in there. The rich help themselves and contribute as little as possible. They'll send the poor off to war while keeping their own kids at home. Interesting what you say about military families. Mine is one until my generation. I said fuck it, no way am I marching round getting shot at because some posh prick tells me too. Same with my sister and cousins.
You say your more into full album reviews instead of the hits but yesterday (when doing Guns-n-Roses) you said just the opposite, I love you and your channel but your really confusing me man...
I think i make it really clear when i am actually doing an album review.. with GNR they block so much it would be impossible to do a full album of deep cuts so i try to squeez in what i can from them if that make sense.... and much luv fam
John wrote this song because he was mad about the rich kids getting out of the Vietnam draft by their parents sending them to Canada and the poor ones having to go .
But some of them had bone spurs......

Pure ‘60’s honest protest.
"I Put a Spell on You" live is a MUST watch for any CCR fan. Absolutely amazing performance!
Man I am a huge CCR fan, they have so many great songs out there. John Fogerty has such an amazing voice too.
CCR is an absolutely classic American rock band! Check out “as long as I can see the light” I think you’d dig that one.
Sweet Hitchhiker!

He says, "How much should we kill?" And their answer is, "More! More! More!"
A great CCR Deep Cut is "Graveyard Train" about an unfortunate collision between a train and a greyhound bus.
Another great song and band!

Have you done their long version of, Heard it through the Grapevine?
Ties with Michael McDonald's cover for my favorite :-)
The draft was sort of a rite of passage.....the RICH always get out this stuff. THAT s THIS SONG!!!!
Thev60s and the Vietnam war , I believe changed a lot of that military urge crap.
I resemble that brother, obviously somebody didn't get the memo that I was supposed to be born independently wealthy.....I'm still waiting!
I’m wit ya ! I ain’t no fortunate one either

I get the meaning of the song although I have nothing against millionaires I wish I was one!
What's next from CCR? Pick any damn song, Biz! Seriously, though, "I Heard it Through the Grapevine". Go for the long 11 minute ecstasy jam version.
No fortunate son either here biz!
And it sure as hell ain't me..

Not only in the U.S., the Vietnam Vets in Australia weren’t treated very well either! I t was just atrocious!
