"Waltzing Matilda" is a widely known Australian bush-ballad, also known as Australia's "unofficial National Anthem" and the story is about a "jolly swagman" basically a wandering workman, who camped by a billabong (a stagnant branch of water from a river) who came across a flock of sheep and decides to steal one. The landowner soon comes with a bunch of mounted policemen and they chase after the swagman for theft. He declares "You'll never catch me alive!" and commits suicide by drowning in the billabong and the song ends with lyrics where you can hear his ghost by the water.
It's actually quite a tragic song but for some reason the tune remains jaunty and happy, which is why I decided I would make an arrangement that better describes the story through music!
Recorded live at the Hollywood Bowl on August 8th, 2019
LA Phil hosted the 2019 #PlaywithRay Competition

I WAS HERE!!! My grandparents asked me if I wanted to go to a concert, and being a violinist I agreed of course. What they didn't tell me was it would be THE Ray Chen playing, and the whole concert was so amazing. Amazing, amazing show and I'm so lucky to have seen him live.
wholesome comment and wholesome profile pic lol
@@irisce2799 haha thanks :)
@@meeks182 of course! cool to see you responding to a comment you made a year ago haha
@@irisce2799 UA-cam is basically time travel
4:44 should be made into a GIF.
That's a new fresh meme right there.
Ok weasel lol
Little did we know 7 months ago we'd be helping him for his discord and youtube...isnt it crazy
Omg hi weasel and nick
I love everything about the Hollywood Bowl except one thing...the sacrilegious clapping in between movements and in the middle of the encore. I watched this on the live stream but I got to say, 4:45 to 4:55 was hilarious
No one cares what u love and definitely not your typical one dimensional American view of what is sacrilegious.
4:44 *slaps self in face* don’t judge!
don't judge! urgh! (slap face) (brett and eddy's voice in the background😂😂)
NO JUDGE (slap)
@@McSherryWhisky hahahahaha
Can I please borrow your eyebrows? I really want violin powers.
I love his beautiful smile and great personality.
Brilliant! Had to wipe away tears, that was so beautiful, and I'm not even Australian.
Google is it possible to be patriotic for a country you've never been to
That's such a coincidence! The person who made the original tune of Waltzing Matilda has the same last name as you!
Christina MacPherson
I watched the whole concert online. Thank you, Ray and LA Phil. I love you all.
That is monstrously beautiful!
Ray Chen ROCKS!
Love how the audience can't contain themselves and break into applause and laughter!! This man truly touches the souls of his audience 👍👍👍👍👍👍
That was played amazingly! When I look into your face, of course I can see the emotion then, but when I close my eyes, I can *hear* it and that's beautiful.
Still brings tears to my eyes. 😍🎻
I Love your reaction when the audience was clapping but you made them realize that it's not yet finished. Hahahaha
Man it isn’t often I hear this song and have it raise the hairs on my arms anymore, being an Aussie, but this gave me chills in the best damn way. This is how it should sound. I love every second of this. Thanks Ray
Ray, Pleaaaase record this professionally I want to listen it without the sacrilegious clapping every day all the time... It is soo beautiful... I want to cry😢
He did! It was a string quartet, also in this channel :)
Thanks for your Aussie spirit!
Beaituful... Just beautiful!!!
And that 4:44 eyebrows... So epic!
now this is epic
ESKETIT ALL YOU STRAYANSSSS
That was lovely Ray. Our dear Aaron was smiling in heaven while you were playing. You’re carrying the touch now. Well done, mate!
Wonderful musician, violin player, arranger and communicator (with a bit of great comic timing thrown in!). Loved that.
So moving. A man who loves his country.
and next to the also great Nathan Cole! Beautiful playing, I really liked your Golden Age album so it's nice seeing it live-ish and with this arrangement. Thanks for sharing and my best wishes.
i like it when we can know the back story and history of the music. thanks for description!!! great performance!
Oh very cool Aussies and Long Live Matilda🌹thank you🌹 Mr Ray Chen🎻👏🌹
cheers mates🌹❤️🇦🇺💙🌹
The 1 person who disliked this video must have been that cello lady in the background who looked completely unimpressed
Truee
This is Ray Chen unleashed!
I don't have words for what happened. Just perfect
4:46 haha I love it, I shouldn't know how to react but Ray takes it very easy
This makes me tear up and I'm not even Australian. 😢❤
One million loves for this great concert and Ray's outstanding performance.
Ray, My Wife Tanya and I were so stoked to meet you after the show and she’s now a convert to the violin. I also have to thank you for autographing a CD for my violin teacher, Georgia, because I’m now her favourite pupil;) cheers mate, Steve Button
I really love this song and the violinist too!! ♥
Someone else here who almost had to cry?
Amazing!👍👍👍
Thank you Ray! We had a good time watching the performance!
Playing music with heart!! Love it!!!!!
I was there 8/8/2019. The way how you played was so beautiful. BRAVO!!!
Beautiful as always dear Ray!💚👏👏👏
Wow what a performance again! Your piece had everything! 👌
Amazing Ray! I watched the concert online from Brazil and a loved it! Congrats!
First time hearing this piece.... so beautiful
That lil dies irae in there. I see you ray.
When you practiced too much Ysaye but it's too depressing to play as an encore.
Liam Shaughnessy thanks for pointing that out. I had to look it up, but I can’t ever miss it again. 💀 Very cool.
James Tsai which Ysaye do you mean? I want to get your reference. I found more than one composer/musician by that name. 🙏🏽
This was posted four days after my Birthday! Thanks Ray!
Super creative arrangement. Good stuff ray
Will you release the sheet music for this?
Not that I could play it anyway, was just curious.
You got me :D
I think it would be a long shot for himself to do it. These variations on a theme generally are built up over time and the notes are solidly in the performer's head, so it's sort of one of those pieces that's quite personal and might not be put to paper for us. However if it is in THAT much demand and/or a publishing company offers up some money to the creator then the public may get something. Just my two cents (actually I wrote quite a lot, so maybe my two dollars haha).
This was definitely my highlight when I was watching the livestream :)
Beautiful!
"And the young people ask me, what are they marching for?
and I ask myself the same question.."
Pure love 😍😍😍 what a sound
レイ・チェンさんのワルチィングマチルダは、いつどこで聴いても素敵すぎる。
こんなにも素晴らしい演奏をUA-camで聴けるこの時代に感謝。
いつか絶対、実際に拝聴したい。
I love what you did with this!
Beautiful. 💖
Any Matilda here?
Nah, just me..
Beautiful solo version. I was hoping the quartet would join in, and we'd hear your other quartet version played live. but this is excellent :-)
everything you play is so beautiful
I hope one day I will have practiced as well as you so I will play half as well :') ❤️ much love de arizona
Aaaa the harmonics are so nice!!!

4:57 that was an awful sneeze. Maybe he's holding it from the start. ✌
I might have said for other video of yours, but this is one of the best ahah Loved it so much!
Heavenly
wuw those fingers !
Love u~Ray💖
i still love the quartet waltzing : /. but this is fine
I love you Ray
Perfect
I want the sheet music so bad!!!
Thanks
Hey Ray, for some reason I was expecting you to make a 2set violin reference during your performance, which was beautifully executed
Wow!!! That's at the Hollywood Bowl. I saw that place when my siblings brought me on a tour of Hollywood. Btw, it's my first time to see you in white coat.
なんて優しい音なんだろう。感動して涙が出てきました。
this is not the song of my youth...i came expecting to enjoy a little SaCrALIgIOus laugh...and i left...crying???...how??? 🥺
My idol...
I like the phasing!
he's so good looking here, wtf
Wish I was there 😭
Ayyyyy Ben Hong in the background
아름답다
❤️
💜
Wow
Wow that’s such a sad story
WHO CAN SHARE NOTES?
Me and ray duet. I would be amazed
If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly
Wow ~~
You are a Australian!
is there a sheet music for this absolutely incredible
ultimate flex
I am soooo sad that the Vivaldi 4 seasons live was removed of UA-cam. It was my favorite version of this concerto.
Australia's a town?
And England is a city.
Can I get the score somewhere for this? I love it! I won't be able to play it properly soon, but I'll strive for it
Can you please comment where to find the arrangement of this
He looks EXHAUSTED haha.
why full apresentation was deleted from YT?
wow his 26 hours of daily practices are really paying off
did you write this arrangement, Ray?
😭😭😭
Hi ray, I play the easy version, which is quite good as well. Good on you😊😊🤣
