I agree, however I think it should be noted that "murderer", by definition, is not the correct word to use in this case. Murder is the "premeditated and unlawful killing of a human being by another". I doubt this kid was intending to kill anyone, he was just being a reckless moron and ended up taking someone's life as a result of his decision. With that being said, I agree he should've been thrown in prison for decades and lost his license permanently .

I wouldn’t blame the parents every time because you can grow up in a well mannered yet financially rich house hold and not be a cocky lil dipsh*t. An 18 year old boy was killed last weekend, his birthday weekend, in a small community, walking on the road at night by another man from the community driving drunk. The driver got out, looked at the broken child, got back into his car and drove away. If it was not for video cameras that recorded the incident, he would have remained silent. The drivers parents went to the childs family to apologise and comiserate. It was their greaterst shame to have brought up such a cowardly, triffling son, who would leave a boy to die on the road. Those parents are braver than the many parents of mostly young men who kill with the weapons provided by their rich daddies, and who then lie, cheat, threaten victims, buy cops to get their son out of the consequences of their actions. This is a world full of fragile egos who should not have children.

Especially since the money was paid by insurances, and not by the owner of the Lambo, as it should have been. Why did the insurances even have to pay? The driver was acting with gross negligence and engaging in criminal behavior - that should have given the legal departments ample of arguments to reduce their liability.
And if daddy had felt actual remorse, he would have put his money where his mouth was, and paid damages to her family, as well. Or at least donated to some good causes in her name.

I have driven that street and that intersection many times. I can’t imagine someone barrowing down Olympic BlVd at that speed without killing someone. This kid never knew what responsibility was. The car was merely a toy and he was living in the land of make believe. His father was no better. Giving a teenager a vehicle like that and expecting him to be responsible was irresponsible. Teens all think they’ve invincible and can’t get hurt or hurt others… until something happens.

You also have to look where you're going when turning left, there's always someone crossing the street. So your comment makes me think you've never driven that street, or any street in LA.
Exactly! I don't even know how he could have gotten up to that speed at that time of day with the traffic congestion _ unless he went down the opposite side of the road to accelerate. I think most of us did some dangerous and stupid things while driving when we were younger. Thankfully my parents weren’t dumb enough to buy me a ridiculously fast car and never condoned racing or driving fast. This kid was set up to fail by an immature moron of a father.

Most likely Australia. We have some pretty strict L, P1, & P2 driver laws here. On top of the strict driving conditions (passenger age/capacity, BAC, SNC, etc,), VicRoads (the DMV equivalent) also have an extensive AF database consisting of 109,854 vehicles that have been assessed for their un/suitability for inexperienced drivers so far. But the basic rule of thumb is as follows...

Monique was a part of my community. I went to school with her cousin. I didn't know her personally, but was affected by her death. There is a memorial sign along with a picture of Monique nailed to the tree her car was pushed into, at Overland Ave and Olympic Blvd. I pass there everyday and think of what she went through.
This really affected our community. I can't even imagine what her family went through. We need justice. What happened to justice?

My dad was an auto mechanic. We were not wealthy. I grew up driving a quarter midget from age 8 to 14. We were taught to operate vehicles safely.
My dad said you never give a brand new car to a new driver. I had first used my parents car. Then i got an 8 year old car in 1987.
During college i was in an accident because of a stupid reason. My dad let me drive around with the unfixed car for many months so i jnew to be more careful.

I agree that his sentence was ridiculously light. He expressed remorse, but his words are hollow. He hid behind lawyers and his dad’s money. Lawyers who did everything they could to excuse his behavior. I feel terrible for that poor woman’s family.
I worked at Olympic and Sepulveda that required driving daily throughout this neighborhood and saw the aftermath the day of this tragedy. I immediately knew it was some idiot going over 100mph to do the damage to the cars that I saw. Then after hearing the details and the sentence imposed I was outraged. She was a beautiful woman who was obviously senselessly killed and he should have been charged with willful murder and sentenced accordingly. RIP Monique...

My ex used to say that intelligence is multiplicative. If you get enough teenagers in the room, the group intelligence nears zero. If I had a dollar for every time one of my daughters said, “I didn’t think THAT would happen” during their teenage years, I’d be rich - and they didn’t have a Lamborghini.
In Finland we have a saying which translates to:"In a group the stupidity gets condensed and thickens" it's maybe a little lost in translation but the meaning is the same and applies especially to teenagers.

As someone who lost their 8 year old niece , my daughter’s cousin and best friend in the entire world …bc of a reckless driver this past June, I have ZERO sympathy for these people. They’re disgusting. And the fact that they receive such light sentences with or without a ton of money is deplorable. My 3 girls had to attend their first funeral at 9, 4 & 4. Of a child they loved and cherished. My sister is broken. My poor niece and everything she was supposed to be was robbed from her and us. And they pay nearly nothing.

I think his father should have done twice the time as the son got. He was entirely responsible, imo. He made all of this happen, he got a ridiculous car, he didn’t supervise him like he was supposed to, he taught him to be reckless, & gave the car back knowing that his son was being dangerous. I will take into consideration that the son is neurodivergent (it’s genetic) & the dad collects cars, used 5 computers at once and seems socially… different. He may not realize that he set a bad example & was a bad father.

A lot of us here in LA made comments on James’ IG. He hired a reputation firm / publicist to help delete. There were also numerous troll/sock puppet accounts defending the Khuri family under KTLA, and other UA-cam videos at the time. I don’t think James has ANY remorse. That’s why he brings up the settlement, as if money is the only thing which matters, and that he almost resents getting beat (I.e having to settle).
If Brendan committed this crime in Texas, he definitely would have been charged as an adult.
I'm not sure about that. Is it not in Texas that a young man who killed four people was let go because the judge agreed with the defense lawyers that the kid was too rich to know right from wrong? A condition they called "affluenza".

In VA that teenage loser would have been charged with reckless driving and be required to go to court after the first traffic stop.

my 86 year old father has spoken of how when he was young the wealthy farmers in the area would often buy their 16 year olds the newest most powerful cars even back then. Which often led to the deaths of their children on lonely winding country roads.

Every time I pass the intersection on Olympic and see the flowers to this day, I think of this incident. This was a very high profile case here. Imo this is not sufficient justice.
Autism and ADHD did not cause this tragedy, bad parenting did. There are plenty of autistic and adhd individuals who manage to operate a vehicle safely without this being the end result. 🙄😮💨
I have aspergers and adhd, and the only time I do dumb things in a vehicle is because people are giving me bad advice that I follow because it's their vehicle. But I don't listen to them sometimes and it prevented a crash one time when I didn't listen to them.
Some of the most odd and emotionally underdeveloped people I have known over the decades have been extremely successful financially. It is strange how out of touch with reality some of them are and how dangerous they can be. Others do good and are grateful for what they have. Thanks Dr. Grande for shedding light on this story. No amount of money can bring back this family's loved one. No amount of posing after the fact can make this seemingly successful man of any real significance in society.

At 18 years of age in 1971, I bought an an extremely fast motorcycle that, had I not been inducted in the U.S. Navy, would have probably killed me.
This Kawasaki 500 was so fast, that outside of professional riders, few people knew how to ride it safely at speed.
I nearly killed myself many times at 100 mph and above, but I never once though of a young mother, possibly with little children, who I might have killed, had I made a bad move in front of them!

A lot of these times electric cars, irresponsibility of the parent to are there kids highly expensive cars they don't know how to drive them safely they get out of hand really quickly you cannot hear the engine because they are so quiet they do not have the respect of a vehicle. Thank you Dr Grande. I appreciate your closing comments. My sister has considerable more wealth than me. We both have daughters of the same age. When they were teenagers, my neice got everything she wanted. My sister boasts her daughter never experienced depression a day in her life. My kid went through a lot. Their teenage experience couldnt have been more different. I think money can buy happiness to a degree. I dont know if having everything you want as a teenager makes you less prepared for life, but I know that not having luxuries did prepare my kid for coping and normal life struggles now in the present day , in her 20s.

Brendan won't EVER care that killed someone. He's got the support to get through it and if it didn't bother him to begin with it never ever will. These people live like this and everyone wants to imitate they way these people live so fewer and fewer humans care at all about each other...

Dr. Grande - Absolutely excellent analysis! When people like Brendan's father say they "pray"... I always wonder just who they are praying to. Thanks for covering this totally avoidable tragedy. I would bet, unfortunately, we have not heard the last of Brendan.
Some incidents can be attributed to fate. But this guy was careless. I do understand that a rich man cares for his son but he seems to have forgotten to teach him about the reality in life.

Men and their expensive hobbies, dragging their kids into ridiculous things that are dangerous. Reminds me of the kid dragged into that unsafe sub that imploded. Letting an unsafe driver drive a car he can’t control. The father knew he was unsafe but still allowed him to drive. Wonder what his mom thought.

He's definitely a spoiled little turd but as a 30 year old man I can attest that I, and every one of my friends at one point in time has driven WAY too fast down a road for no reason at all. Luckily no one was ever hurt. My point is I can easily see how any young man could find themselves in a situation like this

This story gets me so angry. There's no amount of money that can be bring back a loved one. The father is a POS.... giving an immature, young SPOILED BRAT a very expensive and fast car. Social media is toxic because it brings out the worst of people like Brendan and his father, James by bragging on how many high-powered designer cars they have & how wealthy they are. I wonder about Brendan's mother: where was she during Brendan's growing years? Seems that like James, she didn't teach Brendan enough to know the rights and the wrongs either.

I could feel the unspoken eye roll in his father’s post about the exact settlement amount. Given how much he valued wealth it isn’t surprising how focused he was on that number and not the loss of life that he enabled.
