My Uncle was a crewman aboard the vessel S.S. Jack Carnes, a 10,000 ton tanker. The ship was torpedoed by a U- Boat early in the morning on 30 August 1942, about 250 miles west of the Azore islands. The crew abandoned the sinking ship in two lifeboats and set sail for the Azores. That night the two lifeboats were separated in a storm. Six days later one of the lifeboats made landfall. The other boat with my Uncle and 27 other crew including the Captain was never seen again.
