*In the 1st inns he got a wicket in the 6th ball of an over then he got a wicket in the 1st ball of next over. Also inns ended.*
*Then he got a wicket of the 1st ball he bowled in the 2nd inns.*

It's very rare to see a Hat-Rick in Test and I think it's the rarest to see a Hat-Rick in a test by 2 innings. Merv Hughes will be renowned many years for that.

From recollection Geoff Lawson has his jaw broken by a windies quick, and nerve was very fired up for revenge.
Correct , normally Lawson would take the new ball but he was in hospital. Merv took the new ball and got a hat trick

He never backed away from a cricket battle and more than held his own against whatever countries he faced up to and won the respect of all the opponents he faced with his never say die attitude and sportsmanship! The current test team sorely miss the courage and never say die attitude of the burly mustachioed former Australian and Victorian fast bowler.. 212 test wickets.
Yes he was well loved by crowds too. He played in the right spirit. His classy sledging (comedic not personal) style was iconic.
A lion hearted effort from big Merv. They had received a few hidings in that series and Geoff Lawson had his jaw broken by Curtly Ambrose bouncer that afternoon.
Yes Lawson's jaw break is pretty important in the context of the hattrick and the reaction you see for the hattrick wicket. Lawson's injury effectively ended Aus's innings and then Merv's hattrick wicket was only the 2nd or 3rd over of the Windies innings little more than 20 mins after Lawson injury. Clearly they were fired up.

I can only think by taking it across two different test matches. Imagine taking the last wicket in the first innings, then taking the last wicket with the first ball you bowl in the second innings (Say a spinner taking the last wicket in an innings like India's in Adelaide where they scored 36). And then managing to take a third wicket on your first ball in the next match you played.
I'm not even sure if this would even count as a valid hat-trick though.

There's another story behind this hat trick , Australia declared their innings after Geoff Lawson was hit by a bouncer and had his jaw broken.
Normally Lawson would take the new ball, but because he was taken to hospital Merv took the new ball and the rest is history
