  • Vintage Melbourne. Not all the old buildings shown in the slideshow have been demolished, most Manors/Mansions/Houses are long gone though. We also show street shots during the late XIX and early XX. Some of the old lost markets have been added. Not all major historic buildings and manors are included.

Thank you from a grateful, 72yo, Viclander! I was born in inner Melbourne, trained as a nurse at the now gone Prince Henry's Hospital in the mid 1960's. Society continues to degenerate while it over-generates in so many non-edifying ways.

I was a recruit at the old Police Depot across the road in 1966. We used to see nurses leaning out the windows watching us marching in the square, and look up with longing at the little hands waving.

Unfortunately yes, that is true, but not too much we can do about that, except for working with as many of whatever heritage buildings that are still around. There is the odd time where a heritage building needs to be demolished, if it's becoming dangerous from far too many years of neglect, or of course if damaged by earthquakes or fires. However, you never know, sometimes developers might give an old heritage building a second chance at life, they might reuse it, or it will be left in place and become part of a fresh modern development, there's a few examples of that in my area in my area, developers bought a historic Anglican church, it's smaller old hall already in need of repairs was demolished, but the main church building remained in place, the modern building along the rear and right side of it are almost finished, the recently restored pipe organ inside will stay, another building in my area that will become part of a modern development is a large and beautiful two storey bank building from 1904, it sits on a block being redevelopment, the developers bought the already restored landmark, and will incoporate it in the new buildings.

Old beautiful Melbourne, some of those buildings are gone and some knocked down by Whelan and crew. And is that Beethoven music the 9th symphony? Very nice to view nice buildings.🏙🎼

@@brucekilby9957 We've got a major city makeover project happening in my area right now. Private developers are behind this project, but it's for good reason. It's basically the redevelopment of an entire inner city block. A block that was full of mostly neglected and obsolete empty buildings, lots of ugly ones, and some heritage ones. There is a good reason why this project is being done.
Our CBD looked very tired, a lot of our building stock has been left to rot, our CBD was no longer much of a vibrant place, we didn't attract many visitors, some of our people were just going elsewhere to spend or live, and there wasn't much that we could return to the ratepayers of a place that's supposed to be great to live, but lacks a good CBD. Private developers decided now was the time to do something major to change this, make our CBD a more vibrant place again, bring some spend back to our CBD and attract more people to our CBD again,
A lot of people here are pretty satisfied with this project and are ready for when it's completely finished, it's one of the most major projects in the country,

Thank you for sharing those wonderful photos. Melbourne used to be so grand! Why couldn't they build the modern Melbourne next to the old one?

Most of these buildings are excessively grand, ornate, and masterfully constructed - beyond the realistic skill level and limited population of a far-flung colonial fledgling town. It seems evident something else has transpired here and in our history. Or more to the point, someone else's history. Early pioneers in a dusty colonial outpost did NOT build these. They already appear aged also. It is time we revised and re-investigated what we have previously presumed. They have fed us lies.

The photo entitled The Grange Mansion is actually the Victorian Govt Treasury in Spring street at the top of Collins street. It’s still there. How correct are the other notations?
