Looking forward to the blog post - but in my area, peat and peat based products are the easiest to find and the least expensive. I use the Jiffy Mix (12 qts at about $6 a bag) when it doesn't make sense to make larger quantities (small backyard) - but I add vermiculite to that with worm castings when it's cool. Goes a long way for brassicas in early spring. For summer vegs, I go full bore with the 2.5 cubic ft peat - vermiculite, and worm castings. I start several hundred seeds each spring and through the summer and I've had super success with this method.

Gary I love the information that you share! I accidentally bought the rough vermiculite…..can I still use that, anyway to grind it up or should I just buy new fine vermiculite?
Ground would be nearly impossible and time consuming. I would be fine and use the rough like perlite for potting up mixes and such. It would but it really isn't needed in starting mix. Not sure why they do it. Mycorrhizae needs to establish, set up, grow, and form a relationship with the roots and all that. The 8 weeks as seed starts is pretty much ineffective in my opinion. Out in the garden it matters. Good luck this year.
Last year was my third year starting seeds indoor in my cellar. I start a LOT. For the first time I had a massive fungus gnat problem. It was a nightmare and I’m a bit scared to start again this year. My questions: - I cleaned the area thoroughly at the end of my seed starting last year. Is there anything you would do before starting again? Could eggs be in the area? 2. If I keep bags of opened and unhydrated peat moss in the cellar, will that create problems? 3. Would adding Mosquito Bits to the mixes (after they have cooled down) help prevent the gnats?
I used mosquito dunks labeled B t israeliensis in my water to treat an infestation. Worked well for me. I use self-watering mats, so I top-watered twice a week. Took a few weeks, though
Boiling water, mosquito bits works. H202. I have videos on all of it. Hey Gary, I have been following you and your seed starting mixes for years. I owe any success in my gardening to you but have been wanting to ask about reuseing last years starting mixes. Am I good to use left over mixes from outdoors after fluffing the mixtures and adding boiling water to save money? Dave.
You can reuse mix. As long as it hydrated with boiling water, I think it will be fine. Good luck and thanks for watching. Coco coir binds the roots so hard! I've never bought a plant started/grown in coco coir that grew on well. They'll grow for a bit, but they never branch their roots out properly and get big.

Here again is just my silly question I still can't seem to get my head around. Say you buy a seed-starting mix that contains compost (such as Johnny's 512 mix). It also has peat, so of course I would want to sterilize it before using to start seeds in order to avoid those fungus gnats. This I understand. But it also seems to me that the nutrition in the compost ingredient would be eliminated by using the boiling water. Is that correct, and if so, why would it be sold as a wonderful seed-starting medium? I see that other compost-containing seed-starters besides the 512 are available, but I am wondering why if the efforts to sterilize before use negates the compost nutrition benefit. Thank you so much Gary for your garden wisdom.
Nope thats not right. You cant destroy nitrogen phosphorus or potassium or any element. So the plants can still use that. You kill living matter. The nutrients are still there. I'm in 8b, Alabama, and I usually start plants inside in February, and plant in April. Is it possible to start too early? If I started my tomatoes and peppers now, would that be detrimental when I plant them in April? Thank you. I'd love to be able to plant them when they're much farther along by starting them now, but most guides I read say to start 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Thank you
It's just not necessary. But if you can take care of them no worries. Peppers grown longer can benefit more so than tomatoes. 6-8 for tomatoes. The key is getting younger or older plants into the right soil temp. Peppers Iike 10 weeks. Retention of water is what you focus on, and this is how I killed all of my plants. I had drainage the last time I was growing, but what happened was I neglected to protect my plants. The point of drainage is to allow water to escape soil, so if this does not happen then the soil's moisture level can increase then causing plant roots to rot do to drowning in water. I believe it is a gamble to use something that can retain water in soil. Regarding myself I did not use anything to retain water do to me overlooking not protecting my plants from mother nature's rain. Anyway lesson learned for me. Balancing nutrients hmmm. Do you ever try to grow something, and it does not fully develop, or maybe it becomes sick, or perhaps it eventually rots? I think it's very easy to screw up when growing plants. Now I have a new set of seeds, and a verity as well, so the next time I try to grow plants well I am going to be more cautious.
Plants grow 100% hydroponically. So it's not that water doesnt escape. They just need a drying period and cant stay sopping wet. Indoors I dont have issues with nutrients, using a basic water-soluble. It takes time to learn the balance but a drying period on the mixes really helps. Ground would be nearly impossible and time consuming. I would be fine and use the rough like perlite for potting up mixes and such.

Does boiling the Promix defeat the purpose of the Mycorrhizae?
It would but it really isn't needed in starting mix. Not sure why they do it. Mycorrhizae needs to establish, set up, grow, and form a relationship with the roots and all that. The 8 weeks as seed starts is pretty much ineffective in my opinion. Out in the garden it matters. Good luck this year.
Last year was my third year starting seeds indoor in my cellar. I start a LOT. For the first time I had a massive fungus gnat problem. It was a nightmare and I’m a bit scared to start again this year.
My questions:
- I cleaned the area thoroughly at the end of my seed starting last year.

QUESTION: Would you change anything when working with compacted Clay outdoors?
Not with these mixes. I have clay. You need to create a decent planting hole for when the transplants go out.

Coco coir binds the roots so hard! I've never bought a plant started/grown in coco coir that grew on well. They'll grow for a bit, but they never branch their roots out properly and get big.
I agree, something needs to be blended with it.

@THERUSTEDGARDEN TY kindly!!
Is that peatmoss ph balanced? Or did you add lime?
Peat moss is acidic, you can add lime to adjust the ph. Some plants like/ tolerate acidity more than others.
Mine is not buffered and I use it as it. you can add some lime if you want.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Well that's great news and I'm very glad to be wrong! Thank you so much for your help.
Is there any reason you would choose any one home made recipe over another? Or is all just a matter of resource availability and price?
It's really about available resources and personal preferences on use of the ingredients. The recipes provide options for areas that have different resources.

Thank you
Super hots can for sure go sooner, think you can get away going a bit earlier as long as you up pot esp with longer to harvest varieties
It's just not necessary. But if you can take care of them no worries. Peppers grown longer can benefit more so than tomatoes. 6-8 for tomatoes. The key is getting younger or older plants into the right soil temp. Peppers Iike 10 weeks.

I agree on super hots.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks for the response. I appreciate it.
