I was never a fan of this episode. I thought it was a bit out of character and it didn't really fit in with some of the other episodes. I thought the continuity was a bit off. I still thought there was some great bits in it and as usual you've done a brilliant job with the review 😉😁

This was a good episode for Mainwaring. His character got a good chance to show both his earnest desire to defend his country (although I doubt he'd see the parade as rhe highight of his day if he weren't in charge), and to show he's a put-upon husband, and, at the end to show vulnerability, by admitting publicity that they can't have kids. (As others said, yes, the strange cravings are often used as a clue that a character is pregnant.)
About Mrs. Pike, I think she was on the verge of cheating because let's face it, she's been Wilson's mistress for years and he clearly has no intention to marry her for no good reason (he loves her, he loves Frank, they practically live together, everyone knows about them (although there's a hilarious reaction from Mainwaring in an episode as if he didn't know although he clearly knows in other episodes) and he's not married anymore).
This show isn't the best with comtinuity. In blockbusters, we have the rule of cool (doing stuff that don't make sense because they look cool). In British sitcoms (I'm looking at you, Red Dwarf) they break continuity for the sake of a joke. The rule of funny, let's say. There's a later episode in which Mrs Pike has a whole different story about Hodges.

Delicious ribs in a honey sauce and Dad's Army!!!! EDIT - The Pickle stuff hahahaha The cravings for various unusual food during pregnancy is a staple in UK comedy. Even in Let Them Eat Cake, when they suspect Jennifer Saunders is pregnant, she seems to confirm it when she craves a bar of soap hehehe
