Gimbals do make module targetting way easier, but mostly it's just what I'm used to. With the gimballed effect, you generally hit slightly more pellets because the convergence isn't a factor, so especially for smaller targets you hit more pellets and the damage reduction from gimbal is less noticeable. It's mostly my taste for being lazy but powerful.
