For some reason these episodes look particularly good- both the show and your video quality!!!! OLTL looked far better earlier in Rauch's regime rather than later (89 and after)

Yeah I noticed that. The Malone years seemed to have darker lighting. My sister even noticed that when she and I used to watch together during the Marty's rape and compulsive gambling stories way back

First thing Gottlieb did was ditch the bright lighting. In an interview early on she said it was horrible. The actresses in particular were so happy. I remember Linda Thorson said that the show was going to look as beautiful as The Young and The Restless. And it really did- They had very similar looks.. But definitely loving the look of this time period. Rauch wanted it to look upbeat and it did. I do notice that in 1989 it became very harsh looking and the actors really did look orange. There is this really weird point in 1991 where the new lighting was instituted but the old Rauch musical cues were playing -Its very, very trippy.....@@davidbrunson8887

Erika slezak said in her foundations interview that Rauch started getting very bored near mid 88 thus eterna to motivate him. Then long time head writer Peggy oshea left in the early 90s. Oltl dropped to almost last by mid 91. Rauch was def a genius who had the show at such a high level. He hired people to do the classic music cues. He took over in late 83 & I think given how hands-on he was he was just tired. Plus AE leaving was a blow. Then Fiona jdp. Sarah very popular was gone. I think Linda gottlieb def had the lighting very dark as it was that moody grunge period 90s. A lot of characters were created & I think gottlieb did a very good job in the megan death story which still makes me cry. Before Linds arrived megan became a hapless wanderer right after Joe lando was somehow able to leave for prinetime so he was gone right after the wedding. They also got Robin strasser to return. The show did a great job for that 90s socially conscious Era. The show climbed its way back to no. 4 during Megan's death which still makes me cry esp when Andrew broke Jake out of prison & burst through the doors as viki just looses it falling into his arms. They did the homopobia aids story w/ a teen Ryan Phillipe. Malone tried too much to push the envelope. I think gottlieb & Co writer Griffith reigned him in. They did the critically acclaimed gang rape story. They brought back oltl to its roots w/ more diversity the gannons the Vegas east llainview b/c under Rauch everyone was just rich. Every character was in a mansion or could afford hotel suites to live in which is very expensive. Today that would be like 5k a week in fees. In 93 the show had won so many emmys again. Erika won back to back for the d.i.d story. I do think Malone was brilliant as a writer but people did start complaining how dark the show was. Every story was about sexual depravity of the worst kind. Gang rape Marty accusing a priest of seducing a teen aged boy. Then they went all the way there making Victor an incestuous pedo which original fans hated. It was amazing acting by Erika winning her back to back emmys. Malone was a novelist & movie buff so he did kinda rip off a lot of stories his obsession w/ gone with the wind down to Blair as Scarlett doing the bedside apology to Luna in the hospital. Also soaps go on & on but his stories were like his novels wrapping up w/ an end. Abc also stopped him when he wanted to make Joey gay so they invented Billy. He was finally fired after he tried to pair todd & Marty & wanted Blair & max which was a horrible idea after the whole gambling story which went on for a year & unfortunately it never finished out as max started getting help but it got dropped. He was magically cured so Luna could take him back. Clint & viki were wrecked for that pompous sloan. I give Rauch credit he always kept Clint & viki as the signature couple. Gottlieb wanted them done. Then sloan was killed off right after the wedding I suppose to start her spiral to d.i.d.
So I think the material under gottlieb was dark & the lighting matched that. I also forgot the serial rapist story & by that point I recall fans writing in they were sorta tired of all the rape sexual abuse stuff. Also many of the actors didn't like her. She apparently according to slezak was too demanding & more obsessed w/ production & post production editing. U drf can see the stark contrast of gottlieb to Rauch. I personally loved both producers. Rauch was genius at using exotic location shoots particularly Argentina which was referenced for years. It also brought jdp & Fiona to the show.
Anyway I agree the 90s was very darkly lit. I had tapes for years where it's hard to see a lot. 96 was a mess then the labines came on pushing their agenda then imo Jill Phelps just demolished the show w/ the Rappaport take over. Sam & Nora ugh viki & Ben ugh she fired off Cassie. Max pulling his scam on Asa this time. Then the 00s were just crazy & over the top. Plus soaps started losing money.
So again & lastly the dark lighting matched I think the darkness of the Era & show. Their wasn't too much happiness or humor but those were the times.

Brilliant headwriter Peggy O'Shea left in mid 1987.After that the writing started to weaken. The writing was awful by 1989.Headwriter S.Michael Schnessel who took over as headwriter was a very weak writer. The production values went down the drain by 1989 too.The lighting was murky, the sets were old looking and the make-up had an orange color to it.
Paul Rauch obviously lost interest in a show he had really improved in 1985 and 1986.I do not agree about the show being darker after Paul Rauch had left.Executive producer Linda Gottlieb improved the lighting, sets and make-up.The lighting was much brighter after Gottlieb took over. She also had all new sets built and the actors didn't look orange colored anymore. The writing also greatly improved when Gottlieb hired headwriter Michael Malone.

I think I hear Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky" in the University background scenes.

Ah, so it was Jamie that is going to take down Frank and Saundra. And I thought it was Mitch Lawrence.

You mean prison. Been there done that. Lol Statesville Prison not the county jail, jail is short term sentencing or case dismissed because proven innocence and prison is long term sentencing.
