- Today is a long anticipated tutorial on how to finally do multi-disc switching with Popstarter. For those that don't understand what this means, basically using Popstarter, we can play PS1 games digitally on the PS2. But what to do if you have 2 disc game or more? Now how do you simulate swapping discs, as if it was a real ps1 console?

I finally got around to making this tutorial, highly requested by many of popstarter viewers out there. It's not as daunting as you may think, the trick is getting the file names and the paths all correct. Then you are ready to have good times.

I am playing resident evil 3 on ppl daily build using popstarter. When I leave the clocktower, after the door opening cutscene, the screen goes black. Please help. What all can be problems ?

@トマラ When the first disc asks you to go to the 2nd disc, simply restart OPL / PS2 console (make sure you made the final game save) and load the 2nd disc. And as long as both discs point to the same Game Save (MC or VMC). It should be fine

You used the same GAME-ID (SLUS_005.94) for both games in DISCS.TXT I am pretty sure you should use that one for disc 1 and SLUS_007.76 for DISC 2 just in case someone is asking why it is not working as it should.

you don't really show us where to even put the file in uLaunchELF. Not mention of HDD method either. This is not a good tutorial at all.

I'm having some issues. I'm very new to the PS2 modding community, and am running OPL from an HDD on my fat PS2. I have VCD files of MGS, and disc 1 appears to work, but when I duplicate the files you made and put them into the same folder where all my VMCs are auto-created when I load the game, i have trouble getting this method to work. Can you do a more detailed guide that is specific to running games off of HDD and do more detailed steps about where to put files when you have created them, what the folder / file structure looks like, etc so that us newbies have an easier time of it?

popstarter is far more convoluted and time consuming to setup than i imagined. hopefully the process will be streamlined in the future and the game compatibility is improved as well...if not, i'll go with the new tonyhax exploit that was recently disocvered on ps1 models. it requires a disc swap and cd-r's but at least game compatibility will be 100% and it won't require any major setup.
Tonyhax setup is great, I am waiting for my Tony hawk pro skater 2 disc to do the video

Resident evil 2 has 2 discs yes, but isn't one game for Leon and the other for Claire, right? I didn't think one disc depended on the other, please comment.

Yeah I'm having this problem rn. Can't load Scenario B when I boot up either disc.
Sadly, all current issues with POPS will never be solved at the project was abandoned. A more compelling alternative these days is Duckstation. Not only it performs extremely well with Vulkan, but games which are notorious to not even work with POPS and other PS1 emulators (like Brave Fencer Musashi), just work.

but how did you get an .elf file from the vcd ? is the elf really needed ? is there a converter like cue2pops or something ?

I don't remember what you are referring to .elf file from vcd.
I tried, but no luck for Beatmania, could you please check if this method could be applied for Beatmania? For example, disc change from 2ndMix to 4thMix.
But are you able to get the process down for other multi disc games?
What are those extra pops iox pak and where do we have to copy the folder with the texts. I may have missed something

I did it just as you did but when I attempted to change discs it said "the correct DISC was not inserted", what I should do now?
Check the file names, maybe its not named correctly?

How can i play ntsc games on my pal ps2 using dvds.
Shouldn't you be using PAL games on PAL PS2? Some TVs can switch between NTSC and PAL so maybe it may work. I am NTSC console so all my games are NTSC, I can't comment on using PAL on my console and vice versa.
I have a PAL PS2, and I can play NTSC games with the Matrix Inifity modchip. If you really need it, search it on internet, you'll find the answer.
Using Internal Hard Drive should I put the .txt file in the VMC folder that is created from OPL? I hope this questions makes sense. Or do I need to find the individual Folder for each VCD

I haven't done this for internal hard drive, so not entirely sure. It may need some trial and error, but there are not many folders on internal hard drive that could be the usual suspect to put the .txt. I'll put this on my todo list.

i need a method to use disc swap in useing popstarter with opl . the game im trying to get to take the disc swap commands is legend of dragoon
i have it in vcd format and the game is labled as Lod D1 Lod D2 Lod D3 Lod D4 iv tried the discs.text and had theses names the same as my vcd files and they just dont work . can you make a tutorial useing legend of dragon as the example or use final fantasy ix as example since both are 4 discs games

This is a horrible tutorial for anyone using hdd method. When you create the different disc folders, PUT THE DISC FOLDERS (NOT VCD FILES, KEEP THOSE ON YOUR __.POPS FOLDER) INTO hdd0/.__common/POPS OR ELSE THE DISC SWAP BUTTON COMBOS WILL NOT WORK.
hey, watching the video i saw that in the .txt file you named the second disc with the same initials (Slus-05ecc.) as the first, is that something i have to do or not?
It is wrong, each line should have it´s own initials. At least it´s how it worked for me.
I am having some trouble in uploading a game from a previous disc, in this case is Resident Evil 2, you know is a 2 disc's game, so I finished disc 1 and Mada a save, but when I am trying to start disc 2, the save from the other disc doesn't even apear...

I notice your folder names for Disc 1 and Disc 2 both are named SLUS_007.76 but the VCD files are SLUS 005.94 for Disc 1 and SLUS_007.76 for Disc 2. Is this intentional?

Not sure if you made the same mistake I did but after reading the text tutorial what fixed it for me was adding ".VCD" on the DISCS.TXT File so inside the .txt file it should NOT look like MGSCD1 then MGSCD2 but it should be like
Metal Gear Solid CD1.VCD
Metal Gear Solid CD2.VCD
the name should be the exact same as your vcd files and it should include .VCD, not sure if the capitalization of .vcd is important but just copy what the name of your game file with the extension.
Does it matter if the .txt file extension is all caps? The written guide shows all caps .TXT and most other POPS files have to be all caps, like .VCD. That said, your tutorial shows lowercase .txt and it appears to work. I'm just not sure how picky this method is.

I'm using the original mgs 1.0 but no luck, copied everything in this tutorial but still never worked, even used brandnew controllers. Don't know what I'm missing. I need your help on disk combining kits for opl. More power bro!
Well, maybe there is a newer version of MGS online you can find....and it should work.

Now I can finally finish Parasite Eve in a proper Play Station console instead of my PC. Now the thing will be figuring out how to export save games from an emulator into the memory card. I'm sure there's a way somehow.

How does "pop lid" work on a fat? Would it just eject?
May I ask what version of OPL or POPstarter you need to have for this to work? I did the exact thing it said on the website but it doesnt work. The controller shortcuts don't do anything.
I'm pretty sure I have the latest OPL I could find, and I have the special uLE to run PS1 games through OPL.
I don't remember off hand, I'll have to revisit it but either daily build of OPL from ps2-home or maybe opl 1.1.0 official should work.

If you follow the text tutorial, I would think the method is same for all multi disc games, so I'm not sure exactly why that particular game would give issues.

I don't think it works like that. What I would try doing is load a save game and then insert disc 2 or whatever disc to continue the game.

Man I am using the same version of OPL and it is impossible to run this game.
I am using compatibility mode 4 in cheats but after PlayStation logo is shown I have no screen, only the sound :/

Hello, could you please try this with retail CDs and tell if this works? I'm able to play my CD games in POPSTARTER with the help of dummy ELF files, but to swap discs in MGS I had to save before the swap point then played through the part in system browser then picked up in POPSTARTER again. I'd suggest putting ELF inside discs.txt because there's a CD in the drive and no VCD on USB stick.
I haven't tried with retail CD's as that defeats the purpose of using popstarter in the first place with all digital discs. I followed the bitbucket guide to swap the discs digitally, but yes you are correct need a proper save spot before swapping discs. I think it gets complicated when you are trying to use physical discs and then popstarter with digital.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I went full-time POPSTARTER because this was the only way to apply GSM to retail discs in my collection. I have 8 physical games and run everything else off my USB drive. Thanks for your reply tho, I think I'll still have to keep a physical MC around just for disc-swapping. Actually, I was a little unclear. I just wanted to say that if you play through the first CD (retail) in POPSTARTER, you'll need to save and transfer the save from USB to MC then play through the swap point in System Browser, then you can start CD2 in POPSTARTER and go on.

I think if you have multi disc ps2 games, just easier to start with disc 2 or whatever and continue from the save point. I'm not aware of any in game switch discs on the fly like ps1 popstarter method.

Hi, I had my crash bandicoot 2 save file on popstarter and it's says the memory card not inserted I had played it and saved it to 70% but now I can't load it because of that, I searched on the internet and it's says I have to defrag my save file but I done this and it isn't work what I have to do I don't want to play it from beginning again do you know how much was hard collecting gems?

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I searched in ps2home and found that I have not to turn off ps2 in the middle of game, I have to first pause the game and then use the igr and then turn off, so I make another save file and start all over now I am played 86% of the game

There is so similar shortcut keys so load the save game when you go to the next disc.

What cheats are you using in the opl manager to make the game look perfect?
There should be a HDTV cheat you can enable, that should help. I use component cable on my ps2 and luckily it plays nice with my tv and ps1 games.
But how to set up cheats for Multi-Disc games?
Probably with cheats in opl or opl manager v21.7 but I never tried sorry.

Do a tutorial on how to install ps1 games to a sata hdd with no network adapter. FF7 freezes on the opening when you jump off the train and start the 1st fight in the game when playing it off of usb.
If you have a sata hard drive and no network adapter, how are you connecting it to the ps2?

I am using an internal hard drive. I found my VMC folders under the hdd0/__common/POPS directory. I followed your tutorial exactly. I created the DISCS.txt file, and coppied it to both of the Metal Gear Solid VMC folders. I loaded up a new game after launching MGS disc 2 in OPL. The hotkey combo to open the lid works, but it isn't loading the first disc. What am I missing?
Did you follow the text tutorial? I know I did it via usb (and smb) and it works using same hotkeys, assuming both discs are named right and DISCS.txt is setup correctly. If you did all that correctly, then that's a real head scratcher and you may need to go to the source and ask at ps2-home.com for help.
If you ever figured it out I'd love to hear how you fixed it, as I've run into the same problem. I think it might be because the VMC folders are in a different partition than the games when using an internal hard drive, but I haven't found a way around it yet
I've also the same problem, it doesn't detect the first disc. I've been searching on the ps2-home forum without luck, guess nobody has an idea on how to fix this so in the end i'm gonna use the usb and call it a day.
Edit: Managed to get it working on my HDD!. I went on to re-install the entire thing from zero, followed another tutorial to do it and in such tutorial they changed the location of the VMC's to "mass:/_common/POPS" instead of "mass:/POPS/" i put the DISKS.TXT there and worked like a charm, tested with Metal Gear and other games without problems, so hope you can also get it working.
