    A truly chilling reading. You suddenly realise that we can only live our lives in ignorance of their ignominious end. To see the whole span of life at once makes you a stranger to everyone. I was shaken by this video. What a phenomenal performer!

    This was extraordinary, the magic of the glistening eyes at the end. (Though I wondered why Zawe did not have the studio setting of the other monologues, kept worrying a kid was going to throw a ball in her direction..)

    I dont normally understand Shakespeare, but I understood everything in that monologue.
    Funny how times change but at the same time don't

    All the world’s a stage,
    And all the men and women merely players;
    They have their exits and their entrances,
    And one man in his time plays many parts,
    His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
    Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
    Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
    And shining morning face, creeping like snail
    Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
    Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
    Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
    Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
    Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
    Seeking the bubble reputation
    Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
    In fair round belly with good capon lined,
    With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
    Full of wise saws and modern instances;
    And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
    Into the lean and slippered pantaloon,
    With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
    His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
    For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
    Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
    And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
    That ends this strange eventful history,
    Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
    Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

      also, the sophistication of "sans teeth, sans eyes...etc" is so incredible. I'm used to conceiving of this as a pretty grim condemnation, but Zawe Ashton makes it a curious, reserved realization

    BEAUTIFULLY spoken.

    • @TheMarvymart
      @TheMarvymart 5 років тому +7

      No, it helps. I think the soliloquy is about the banality and predictability of individual lives. Banal human noises add to the point, I reckon

    • @MandyJMaddison
      @MandyJMaddison 5 років тому +2

      They might add to the point, but her voice is quiet, and there are pauses. For someone with imperfect hearing, or who has difficulty being selective in their hearing, the background noises are to loud.
      Her voice forms a quite drone, which could itself be background noise, while the noises themselves are many and varied - birds tweeting, children calling out, a car accelerating etc etc. Despite the fact that what she SAYS is interesting, the drone of her voice is less exciting than the noise around it.

      But I think it works well to emphasise the normality, the everyday-ness, of Shakespeare's point. Life moves on.

      @@TheMarvymart What works best is to hear what's being said. Also the delivery is what you would except from a soliloquy in a tragedy. As you like it is a comedy.

    I have Serbian, Polish and Bulgarian heritage and I always thought this was the best Edward De Vere (the true Shakespeare) speech ever translated into Serbian. In Serbian, it can literally be read as follows.
    Ceo svet je pozornica,
    A svi muškarci i žene su samo igrači;
    Oni imaju svoje izlaze i svoje ulaze;
    I jedan čovek u svoje vreme igra mnoge uloge,
    Njegova dela su sedam godina. U početku beba,
    Mjukanje i povraćanje u naručju medicinske sestre;
    A onda cvileći školarac, sa svojom torbom
    I blistavo jutarnje lice, pužeće kao puž
    Nevoljno u školu. A onda ljubavnik,
    Uzdišući kao peć, sa jadnom baladom
    Napravljeno do obrva njegove ljubavnice. Zatim vojnik,
    Pun čudnih zakletvi, i bradat kao pard,
    Ljubomorni na čast, iznenadni i brzi u svađi,
    Traženje reputacije balona
    Čak i u ustima topa. A onda pravda,
    U lepom okruglom stomaku sa dobrim kopunom,
    Sa oštrim očima i bradom formalnog kroja,
    Pun mudrih testera i savremenih primeraka;
    I tako on igra svoju ulogu. Šesto doba se smenjuje
    U mršave pantalone u papučama,
    Sa naočarima na nosu i torbicom sa strane;
    Njegovo mladalačko crevo, dobro spaseno, svet previše širok
    Za njegov skupljeni krak; i njegov veliki muški glas,
    Okrenuvši se ponovo ka detinjastim visokim tonima, cevi
    I zviždi u njegovom zvuku. Poslednja scena od svega,
    Time se završava ova čudna istorija bogata događajima,
    Drugo je detinjstvo i puki zaborav;
    Bez zuba, bez očiju, bez ukusa, bez svega.
