  • The Battle of Normandy is the name given to the fighting in Normandy between D- Day and the end of August 1944. Allied code names for the beaches along the 50- mile stretch of Normandy coast targeted for landing were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
I had the chance to visit Normandy in October 2023.
This will remain one of the most memorable visits of my life.
On D-Day, 14,000 Canadians and 6,400 British troops landed on Juno Beach, taking heavy casualties.
Omaha beach was unlike any of the other assault beaches in Normandy. Its crescent curve and unusual assortment of bluffs, cliffs and draws were immediately recognizable from the sea. It was the most defensible beach chosen for D-Day; in fact, many planners did not believe it a likely place for a major landing.
I spent about 5 hours here. Many travelers book a few nights here so they can truly absorb the area, see the museum, wander the beaches.
My Dad served in the 2nd World War in the Navy and he shared many interesting stories with me.
This is something you should consider seeing.
