So I like your setup, however, you took the PWM out of the mesh housing that enabled it to get air. You said that it does not overheat. How long did you run it continuously to test this? If you were to make a long run across a lake or a river, then I can see that it could overheat. Have you tried this and if so, at what speed?
I do live/fish Lake Tahoe, primarily and I run the unit full speed for up to an hour straight every time I go out. I have sold approximately 60 units over the last year and have had zero failures in use up to 55lb. motors. In my experience, heat issues are often due to a factor other than the pwm... maybe too small gauge of wire somewhere or a bad connection. There are junk circuit boards out there, the boards I use come from a trusted source.
It might, I sold a few to people who used them with 55lb. motors. I don't recommend it, but I don't sell them anymore, so it only matters if you have found one on the used market.

@user-ht2sh1tz7o actually a 45lb or 46lb if you go NV works really well for kayaks. Old Town uses Minn Kota 45lb motors on all of their motorized offerings! It's light enough to hoist and has enough torque to get a kayak going as fast as it will go... I have two speed controller suggestions. Aksmaniyak is the authority on diy options and FPV is a company that sells a unit very similar to mine through a retail store called Mariner Sails. Hope this helps... what kayak are you outfitting?
I have a NPV 55 thrust I see in the description that your pwm is rated only up to 46 thrust what would need to be improved to be compatible with my motor
Hi Steve, thanks for your interest. I have sold a few to people who have 55lb. motors, thus far I have NO reports of failure. I think a few criteria are important. First, using the manufacturer recommended wire gauge, bigger is better, as well as a circuit breaker at the battery, no larger than 50 amp. If you are using the larger motor because of its "weed whacking" abilities, this controller is not appropriate as you will constantly be in the "max amp draw" range. Otherwise, full speed for prolonged periods should be no problem. Finally, I believe I could build one with a Minn Kota Traxxas circuit board, rated for a 55lb. motor but you would lose the fwd/off/reverse switch in lou of a dual direction potentiometer with an "off" detent in the middle. Kill switch, leads and enclosure would remain the same but the last time I priced out the Minn Kota part it added $100 to the price. Ok, hope this answers all of your questions, lmk if I can do more.
