When I was a teenager I crossed a pond at night time that was probably about 3/4 a mile wide, it had 2 small sections of open water. Just as I was coming off the first section of water the belt blew. Knowing I had more open water just ahead of me was the worst part, I have never changed a belt so fast in my life, I'd be surprised if the whole thing took me 30 seconds, but it felt like forever. That was the last time I took any chances on ice when by myself, I got very lucky it blew when it did and not just before entering the 2nd patch of water.

I will never cross a lake or pond at night unless I know the place like that back of my hand , the only reason why is because of a story my dad told us growing up. It started as my dad and a bunch of his friends renting a cabin on a lake all with their sleds and the night they got there one of the guys got got on one and took off onto the frozen lake, he made it about halfway across when he hit a dock doing approximately 90 mph. Sadly when everyone heard the sudden boom of the impact their hearts sank with the realization that their friend is gone. I hope you and everyone else stays safe riding and always know about the place you’re at before going out

The same thing happened to me on my F7 mod on bare ice, but when my belt blew around 108MPH it wrapped around the secondary and locked up the track. I was out cold for 4 minutes the guy I was racing thought I was dead. Split my helmet almost in two, but on the bright side he was riding a F1000 and I smoked him. And I know after 110MPH he would have walked past me.

I have a buddy that bought a new Yamaha it was when they came out with the 3 cylinder 4 stroke crotch rocket engine, I dont remember the model. He just got the sled and put a Bender racing turbo kit on it and put 144 studs in the track and an M10 suspension under it and then took it for its first ride. The turbo kit had 3 settings on it the first was around 185 hp and the 2nd 245 hp which he normally rode it and the second was around 300 hp, I rode the sled a couple times and it was no fun what so ever for me extremely jerkey and the power was on or off there was nothing in between. He was on his second weekend of riding it and he blew the Kevlar belt on it at some stupid speed and it took out the hood, ripped the clutch apart and ripped up the belly pan, it cost him almost 5K to get the sled running again, then he changed the belt whenever he got around 900 miles on that belt. The belts were over 200.00 each. He would ride the sled for a weekend and it would be in the shop all the next week being fixed and he would pick it up on friday and go out and destroy stuff again. Before that sled ever hit the snow he had well over 20K into it and then figure close to 1K for repairs each week. It was fast i would bet it would go over 120 mph, but what an incredible money pit!!!

The trick is getting tall gears in the chain case. The 1000 engine only revs 7100 stock (this one 7500) so you’re losing speed (rpm) over the stock F7 engine. I think I was running 25-35 by the end of owning it.

Belts are easier to replace! It's a point of failure anyone can service. You can tell when your belt is getting worn out, you can tension it and keep it in good health. A drive shaft, being a different kind of mechanism, if it fails its much harder to service and figure out. Since it would be made of metal or carbon fiber, the pieces may damage the engine as well as shrapnel.
You can change a belt when you are in the wilderness 200 km from civilization. A drive shaft - good luck.
