Join us, Daphne and Ian, as we embark on our new chateau renovation projects! This week, we tear into the walls of our chateau offices! We explore new curtain designs for the Louis Room and offices. While we await Benoit's return in February, we begin planning how to incorporate more of his artisan carpentry into our bathroom remodel!
Our "beau chateau" (The 500-year-old, Chateau De Lesigny), is located near Paris, France. Most of the structures around the chateau domain need a full restoration, so we are investing everything we have into making the property thrive! We are learning more about french culture and developing new skills along the way!
As a French/American UC Berkeley graduate in Agriculture (Daphne), and a U.S. Air Force Tactical Response Force Veteran/ Kinesiologist (Ian), we share a love for challenges and adventure. We have a long road ahead of us and we are excited to share the experience with you!
You can support our renovation projects by joining our Patreon Community, where you can also gain access to exclusive videos and behind the scene access with Daphne and Ian! All patron funding is used to renovate this historical French Chateau. Every patron is paramount to our chateau renovations and we thank you all tremendously!

Rent a steamer and steam the paper off the wall. It works great by softening the glue and then you can scrape with a paint scraper.
@Jojo Dutch- I agree. Renting or buying a steamer for the wallpaper is a huge plus. I've seen this method done on another Chateau channel & the wallpaper came off easily. It is worth the investment because it saves so much time, effort & hassle.
I saw its use in a renovations UK show. Looks like a rectangular iron, electrical, no idea if it's a common tool.
Yes, rent a steamer!
Yes! Rent a steamer, and use a wallpaper perforator tool and your scraper. It makes the job super simple when you use the proper tools and technique (I know from my own renovation nightmare!).
That's what we did once upon a time. It was the best method - and still really hard. Good luck!
I love, Love, the green and wood combo you’re considering for the bathroom.
Joy Donovan, I loved that green and wood combo too. Loved it!
Ian’s Weekly Outdoor Adventure is my favourite tv show
That’s fantastic! 😄 Ian will be cleaning the moat walls soon, so stay tuned 👍
@@TheBeauChateau No spoilers!! 😂
Putting up wall paper and taking it down gives you a good chance to fight with your partner!
You’ve got that right! We were in that room for several hours 😆
The gold draperies will bring such a richness to the wood.
Ian’s all about the Wizards and Leprechauns 🤣
Out of all the chateaus that people are sowing on YT, yours is the most Amazing. It’s what I think that a chateau should be.
Doing such a great job on a huge project really great you two love tne outside and wow so big!!! Thank for sharing xblessings B
I know this might be too late, but use some watered-down fabric softener. I have also put small cuts in the wallpaper to get the liquid in. It works great and smells better than Vinegar!
Cheap hair conditioner works too.
Vinigar is a natural product versus all the chemicals in the fabric softener.
You can score it by dragging the cutting side of a handsaw across the paper. You can crosshatch with the saw for better penetration of the liquid you are putting on.
A Little bit of hard work everyday and before you know it the place will be done and it will look stunning!❤❤
I'm SO glad you are going with the gold fabric color! It plays so well with the portraits and picture frames in the room. It will be beautiful! And Ian is so funny!
Chainsaw maintenance: You should sharpen the blades each night when you’re done using the chainsaw. It’s the best way to upkeep your chainsaw & keep it operating smoothly… sharply 😊
Ian: "I'm gonna go with wizard." That cracked me up! For getting the wallpaper off, I'd recommend getting a wallpaper steamer - they work quickly; you've got so many rooms to do that it would definitely be worth purchasing.
We are glad to bring a laugh to your day 😄 We will definitely look into steamer rentals. We can’t imagine continuing the wallpaper removal with the same tedious method…
Have a wonderful week! See you next Sunday 😉
@@TheBeauChateau No need to rent , they are very cheap and last for years !
Just a little comment to help you with the youtube algorithms.
Thank you.
Scott
Such a fun video to watch. The curtains are going to be beautiful in that room ... Do you ever wonder what people were thinking when they chose the purple wallpaper? Purple is my favorite color, but in moderation. Glad the drone and the rescuer are safe ... And only one on the ladder! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us ... Patrice and Jimmy 🦊 NY
Thank you Patrice and Jimmy! We appreciate you watching our video 😊 It seems as though the wallpaper was added in the late 60s or 70s when the offices were remodeled (unfortunately). Rest assured, we will not be adding any wallpaper to the offices 😄
@@TheBeauChateau one of the other channels used a spray that they sprayed on all the wallpaper waited 10 minutes and it peeled off. No stream or scraping. I think it was Escape To The Chateaux.
Thumbs up for the realistic portrayal of chateau life! Glad you were able to retrieve the drone, because I love those shots.
Ian. Would have like to see your climb the tree. Love the green tiles for the bathroom. Great video
James
Hi James! Thanks for watching! I was about to set up the tripod camera to get me climbing, but it was getting dark so fast and I wasn’t sure I could set up everything and get it in time. Don’t worry, I still have plenty of chances of crashing again 😉
@@TheBeauChateau i enjoy watching when you both are working together. It look like you both have a lot of fun.
James
Billy Petherick gave y’all a shout out when talking to Ryan on their new channel Bantermine. He loves your filming.
Wallpaper removal is the worst! Fabric softener works well. A wallpaper steamer works better. Have fun😀
Thanks for the tip! We will look into those options because that felt like so much time for such a small wall ☹️
The wizard did It! That is my new go to excuse..🤪😂
Love your vlogs. If you replace your curtains, keep the old ones. You may be able to recycle them.
Make sachets out of them and sell them!
Try a wallpaper steamer it really helps remove it.
You need to invest or hire a steam wallpaper remover!
Yup, came here to comment the same thing. But a thumbs up works just as wel!
We stripped the wallpaper from our 30-ft-long living room. I second the advice about using a steamer plate.
Going to be stunning your grandpa would be so proud
Thank you so much Tammy! That sentiment means a lot 🥰
@@TheBeauChateau welcome so happy I found your channel your story really touched my heart
Agreed, of all the chateau channels we watch, the story of the Beau Chateau is unique!
@@wadeharrison5404 it is
The chateau grounds are looking wonderful. Enjoyed.
Thank you! We hope to have the moat cleaned up next 😄
@@TheBeauChateau Have you been magnet fishing in there at all?
Ian, I love the new bigger chain saw.
May you have many days of fun together.
It’s awesome! so far, I’m lovin it 👍👍
Du bois de chauffage pour l’hiver prochain 😊
Ian you are funny...the predicaments you find yourself in! Could you ever have predicted it? LOL!
Wallpaper and ivy are twin scourges! Also treetops for drones!
Get a paper tiger it scores the paper so the water can get into the fibers. I used one years ago and it worked Great! Add a few drops of dish soap to the spray! and yes try a steamer. Much Love You two are so CUTE!
I was trying to think of the "tool" I used. I couldn't locate mine but it sounds similar. I believe it was made by Zinsser and looked like a mushroom top with several "cowboy" spurs on casters under it! LOL! I re-read my description but it's accurate, at least I think so. It worked wonders scoring wall paper. Spritz with vinegar water, wait 10 minutes and scrape. Depending on the paste used it comes right off.
Careful on drywall! I realize that the chateau likely has none, but my Paper Tiger also scored the drywall underneath, and I could not tell until the paper was off. Caused a load of damage.
Dish soap in the warm water works great.
The Green in the bathroom is AMAZING! Wonderful choice.
I love your videos and can’t wait to see more. 😀
Have you ever thought about getting Workaway volunteers to help you at your chateau like Stephanie does at her chateau ? As for the wallpaper removal, not a fun job. I do know they have steamers that you can use to remove the wallpaper as well as liquid solutions that you put on the wall to help remove the wallpaper too. You both are doing an amazing job and I look so forward to following your journey. Have a great week 😀
Ian - I love your self-deprecating sense of humor - keep it up!
I always enjoy your garden work.
I’m starting to think all drones eventually land in a tree.
Ian, you are clearly not afraid of heights, whether it be a tree or a ladder with two people on top. I laughed so much when Daphne told you to get the bit over by you and you just kept reaching over her lol. It's lovely to see you both enjoy each other as you work. Always keep that amazing joy in your relationship! xx
The new curtains will really set that room off. Every time I watch your episodes and see that staircase, I see a large circle table in front of the mirror that is on a large round rug. I could see a large flower arrangement for weddings and such sitting on it. I think that and a large runner carpet from the door to that open spot towards the staircase would help with the echos in that area.
I love to watch the big renovation channels but they've started to get a bit boring until I found yours! Your 1st episode was heartwarming and I found myself cheering for you it reminded me of when my Dad passed and I had to decide if I was going to run his printing business or just continue with my life as I knew it. I'd never owned a big business before but I couldn't bare just shutting down something he'd spent his life doing so I went for it, went through the school of hard knocks as they say and learned 3 years of schooling in 6 months or less but it was all worth it
I just finished binge watching all of your episodes up to this latest one and honestly, your channel is worthy of a network and your story is intriguing I only wish the episodes were longer!
Keep making your visions a reality I believe you can do it! 💖
My grandpa was my father figure and I loved him with my whole heart so I understand your love for your own grand father.
What a beautiful legacy he has left you! ♥️
Wallpaper helps you to understand how many bad words you know. It also helps to put a little fabric softener in your warm water. Have fun!
🤣
You guys lucked out with the purple room. To make you feel better: it took me 2 MONTHS to get the wallpaper off my dining room walls, and the paper started above the chair rail!
The both of you on one ladder! LOL. So cute.
The opening scene with the music is so enchanting!
Ian and his badass 18 inch saw!
The bathroom sounds sensational!
Great music.
Love you guy's! ♥
Fabric softener and water is the only method I found to actually help.
I am new to your channel and was told about you by my daughter. With wall paper, get a wall paper scratcher, dampen down the wall, let it sit and very carefully start to peel off the paper. A steamer helps to speed up the process. 🇨🇦
Dilute fabric softener ( one that you can stand the smell) in water, put in a spray bottle and spray sections of the wallpaper and scrape off. Removing wallpaper is tedious work.
Loving your channel!
You and Ian make a great couple!
Keep up all your wonderful hard work!
First drone shot is STUNNING! I'm really excited for you to get new curtains... mmmmm.
In the vlog touring the outbuildings, you asked what the piece of heavy equipment was - it is used in the hay gathering process by horse drawn or by tractors. If you have two, you could sell one to use towards reno expenses. You can also score wallpaper and spray with fabric softener.
loving the flapper music
Y'all have great photography filming music and love your voice and how you'll work together ❤️
Love ❤️ watching youll
Ian you crack me up! But it’s good to see your not superman at everything 😂 the new curtains will lift the room cannot wait to see. Well done you two oh and Dad! 😂
Thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it 🥰
I've watched your channel from the beginning and watch every week, love watching your channel, but wish you would do two videos a week, really enjoy watching your channel,
I love the goldish curtain fabric. Will add more light to the room, and definitely elegance. In the States there is something called a "Paper Tiger," a disc with plastic teeth that you score the paper with, then roll or spray on muriatic acid, wait a few minutes, and pull the paper off. Sometimes though, the paper is just so adhered to the wall one must leave it on, prime or otherwise treat (or not) and paper over.💗
11:30 The magical tree and fence combo is so cool!!!! It should be left that way!
For a pocket door, you can’t have plumbing in the wall. I saw the plumbing controls, so they would have to be moved.
Not really, my bathroom is the same setup and I have functional sliding pocket doors.
If they go with a tub, that old plumbing will be gone. And how thick is that wall I wonder? Her father surely saw those old fixtures when commenting.
I have used straight liquid fabric softener to remove wallpaper before and I like how it worked.
Such a beautiful chateau and your videos capture all the beauty of it. I was happy to hear Billy Petherick say what an awesome job Ian does!! Thanks for taking us along on your journey!
Hey y'all! Love the two of you in the ladder! BTW you know how people put sheers ( lacey see through curtains) behind curtains right? Well, if you put them on the front of any color curtain it makes them so so elegant! Look into it! Also, Ian needs a photo shoot done in the Chateau! I'm not kidding. And I don't mean shirtless pics with the new chainsaw. I mean classy Ralph Lauren type.
I used to own a wallpaper removal company in Washington, D.C. The best way I found to removing wallpaper, was using "spray nine" and a Dobie sponge. I don't know if you can get these in France, but it is definitely worth it in removing wallpaper. It not only takes the wallpaper off, but the glue underneath. Not hurting the walls underneath. Good luck with this project!
I’m enjoying your vlogs! Virginia, USA
Thanks, Daphne 😄
Ants ate the wood under the tub of the parents of a friend. Luckily, they never took a bath in that tub because they would have fallen into the basement! They discovered this when they renovated the bathroom for a totally different reason.
That’s so crazy! We had no idea. After finding all of the mold and damage beneath the master suite tiles, we are scared to uncover the other bathroom tiles 😬
I didn't read all of the other comments but wallpaper steamer looks like the way to go with removal. I haven't used one personally but have seen others do it and looks like magic!
All of sudden our one acre lakeshore cabin in Northwestern Ontario, Canada doesn't seem so overwhelming. Love the spirit and determination in all your cinematic videos!
Fabric Softener worked great for me. I applied it with a spray bottle after scoring the walls with a wallpaper scorer.
The Blue in the bathroom is so beautiful!!!!
Yes vinegar n water to get wallpaper off wall n paste off walls!! I use a pump garden sprayer to get water on walks it is less hard on the hand muscles!! It is long job when it does not pull off easy
I like the gardening / landscaping side-story.
Such a simple solution : get yourself a wallpaper steamer which works perfectly and quickly 19:08 . Gold curtains will look gorgeous, and so will green ones.
"Dome (pause) thing" so funny!!
Sadie in France UA-cam channel has the name of a product that removes wall paper quickly. They used it at the convent her brother Billy is renovating.
Time never flys faster than when I am watching your videos. I could watch for hours. You capture the beauty of your chateaux perfectly !
The additional weight of the new, & bigger- battery operated chain saw,
Is a reminder of the compromise of greater force -aka: Power.
Also a reminder;
The wieght lifting results in sculpted of bodies
I enjoy watching everything you and Ian do. Can't wait to see the new curtains!
It will be so awesome to see all the new improvements. The green stone for the bath with natural wood will be like a magical woodland retreat. ❤
Totally rent a steamer to remove the wallpaper. It makes it SO easy and fast!
You two together are my favorite chateau channel.
I love the gold draperies against the dark wood.
Ian’s momentary brain freeze and description of the gazebo - hilarious!
Beautiful chateau and grounds.
Maine USA
There is a great steamer that works really well getting wall paper off.
Love the green bathroom and pocket door idea. Think very carefully about using wood anywhere it gets wet, it looks awful water marked.
Your videos are beautifully filmed
Sorry if this is a repeat comment but using a mixture of water & fabric softer works well (with or without the steamer). Also, wall paper scratcher (not sure of official name of this tool) is a must!! I used a new/clean garden/bug sprayer to mist the walls with the mixture. Let it sit for 5 to 10 mins (scratch walls with your tool before spraying) & the mixture releases the glue. 😊
Thank you for your video. I love watching you both and you always make me smile. Can't wait to see the continued progress on your Chateau.
I could never make the millions of decisions you have to make for products when remodeling. Just looking at all the beautiful curtain choices stressed me out. Lol. I really like the goldish color you chose for that room and think the green will be beautiful in the office. As always, best of luck and your videos are awesome. Timmy in Texas
I think a champagne color would look gorgeous I that room with that wood.
I wonder what other surprises the "WIZARD" has in store and hidden around the chateau. I love you guys and this is definitely my favorite UA-cam channel. I feel like I know you two so well haha. Keep up the hard work and can't wait to see your next video
Great ideas on the drapery fabric!
Hi Ian definitely excited to see you guys rebuild that GAZEBO . 😊
As always, an interesting and insightful video. Thoroughly enjoying watching your work, decision making and progress.
Thank you very much! 😊
Just read your name, PumpjackPiddlewick. Fantastic 👌
@@TheBeauChateau Merci beaucoup (from Bourgogne) 😙
Happy ending.
The choice of fabrics you made for the drapes is perfect for each of the rooms. I agree that orange may not be the best choice for an office. The green fabric will have a more calming effect on the mind. Ian will thank you for that choice! I love the idea of gold drapes in the main room! 👍
Oh I would have loved to see a sheer champagne cream color curtain to let light in as well as give that glow effect.
But I know it's not my place to say but I know it will be beautiful what ever color goes up. It's just a beautiful place no matter what
Love the wooden panelled walls in that room
You need a heat gun for wallpaper .... and I love the green for bathroom . Just as well you have you clever Dad and Benoit .. the grounds are looking great well done Ian
Rent a wall steamer. It will be well worth it. It makes striping wallpaper soooooo much easier.
Wallpaper is never fun to remove.
Enjoying channel and beautiful Chateau
The bathroom will be beautiful with the green tiles.
❤🇨🇦
I had a room with wallpaper that was going nowhere. I tried so many methods, including a scoring tool and spraying the wallpaper with water solutions. In the end, I soaked layers of newspaper, plastered them onto the wallpaper in sections, and let the wet newspaper soak the wallpaper for about 30 minutes. Then I would remove the wet newspaper and proceed with scraping the wallpaper away. It was a huge mess, but it got the job done.
Wall paper removing is daunting at best, buy a wallpaper steamer the instructions will explain all.
Good luck 😘
Hey Ian perhaps that light on your second chainsaw is there in case there's a zombie apocalypse. One must be able to see the enemy when one is defending their chateau. You looked very John Wick sporting two chainsaws. You certainly proved your love for your drone by climbing that tree in the dark. I guess that was a live and learn experience. Another great vlog with excellent editing. Cheers from Toronto
I really love the music that you choose for your videos
12:38. In France, a gazebo is called Belvédère ou Kiosque 🙂
You can buy or rent a wallpaper steamer. It’s great and will move it along quickly. I love you both. Exciting plans 😊
For the bathroom sink if two sinks do not work use one modern long narrow sink and it can add space to put things on not just on the side but in front or in back
I love what you're doing with the bathroom in the colors FYI you do not want to put back copper pipes because they can freeze and they bleed you want to go with a Pax
Loving your channel!
