In Search of the Mysterious American Woodcock (with Night Vision!)

- American Woodcocks are goofy and interesting birds that show up in early spring in the midwest, doing their mating display and making their classis "peent" calls during the evening hours. Sometimes, these encounters happen at night, so we used some night vision binoculars to make sure we didn't miss seeing these quirky birds.
Special thanks to Matt Zuro for letting us use his American Woodcock photos seen in the cover image (edited) and 0:40, 1:09, 1:17, 1:23, 3:19, 3:58, 4:33, 5:03, and 5:41.
Special thanks to our members Liz McQuaid, Sarah Coffey, Barbara Cole, Chris Slagle, Sally, Sarah, Scott Carmichael, and Laurie Borgers!

My family actually had an American Woodcock in our garage once! It was almost a decade ago, really interesting to see up close!
That must have been a really cool experience. They’re such fascinating birds
I had my very first woodcock sighting in a evening guided by a naturalist in local park. I was amazed and excited seeing one woodcock’s incredible display.
I saw my first woodcock in the woods behind our house just a month after I started birding three years ago. The next year, it was in almost the exact same spot as the year before and just a day early. We moved away before year three.
You’ll have to go check on him from time to time lol
Saw my first woodcock the same day this was posted!!! (on a sandy patch of shrubs in Rhode Island)
You’re welcome!
The Timberdoodle! That is the name of our bird clubs newsletter.
That’s a great name for it
Timberdoodle is arguably the best choice of name for this goofy bird
A provincial park (Canadian state park) nearby my house has a grassy, shrubby area in the campground where you can find woodcocks displaying on campsites!
Epic!
The American Woodcock is so beautiful, I have never seen one of its family with those colors; Here in the south of the world they are all cryptic colors, similar to each other. Interesting video.
Thanks for watching!
Love your videos guys! When are you coming to Mexico? It would be a super cool episode. I can take you to see Maroon fronted Parrot, Worthen´s Sparrow, Crimson collared Grosbeak, etc.
We’d love to bird in Mexico sometime!
Could you send us an email to tell us a little more? Badgerlandbirding@gmail.com
My favorite bird ❤
Woodcocks are cool birds for sure! I would say that they are one of my favorites. Awesome video by the way!
Thank you!
I've only seen a Woodcock once in my life. I don't live in their proper habitat. It was a serendipitous sighting. It occured the morning after a blizzard, when I was shoveling snow. One house from mine is an small wooded hill. As I was facing that direction, I herd a rustling of feathers and from that hill flew a Woodcock. It flew in my direction and just a few feet over my head. I assume the bird got caught in the winds of the blizzard. What became of it, I do not know, as I never saw it again.
great video guys !! always enjoy your work.
Thanks, Todd!
I saw my first one this year! Still need a photo of one though!
These are always a highlight of my early spring. I love you channel! I started from more of a photographer/naturalist angle versus "checklist" birding. Though I definitely have gotten more into the lists, I always appreciate learning and going in depth still so your videos are a great blend of both worlds! Thank for all the effort.
Thanks for sharing! And for watching! We’re glad you’re enjoying the videos
That was really cool, you guys did a great job
Thanks!
Great video guys!

Was in festus Missouri
I used to see a woodcock in a big woodlot.
Is this going to be the start of a tongue twister

They tweet at dawn also? I can’t remember.
I’ve personally never heard them at dawn but I’ve also not really gone out specifically looking for them in the morning
