  • In this short demonstration video, UA's Will Shanks provides three great tips for incorporating the UAD-2 Lexicon 224 Digital Reverb plug-in into your mixes. Topics covered include: Adjusting the decay times and parameters of the 224 for use with percussion, creating futuristic Blade Runner-esque kick drums, and developing ethereal guitar sounds a la Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

    You cant make authentic late 80s and early 90s music w/o this reverb's magic. The same way we have learned in the digital age of the magic warmth and coloring saturation of analog gear with transformers, the pleasant musical shaping of tape, and the mixing and arrangement techniques of yesteryears' greats....so must we not overlook the king of reverbs: the Lex 224. If you cant replicate something similar sounding with your reverb, your reverb has failed and is obsolete in the digital age(vs this retro "digital" reverb masterpiece).
    If you truly wonder whats missing from some mixes, its reverb treatments like this that you find in so many of yesterday's greatest works(including film scores etc). Its only surpassed by what can replicate its "magic" and do even more realistic sounding stuff vs the magical sounding stuff you find in the 224. That long tail is something youll never hear in real life...only in masterpiece mixes, fantasy worlds, and visions of being in Heaven.
    Its artificial for mortal ears but it reminds you that there is something greater...its the one of many nuances that made us look up to artists and consider them "stars" for sounding unreal in our speakers(literally like nothing we ever heard in real life...digital reverb).

    This is a great reverb. Had it next to a 224XL and a 224. Sounds just like the 224XL hardware but without the noise and digital glare from those ancient 80s converters. The 224 actually sounded a little darker then both. While I like hardware when working with a desk, for itb or hybrid mixing this is a no brainer. Great Reverb right there with the hardware.
    Demo it for yourself. And don't listen to the comments about the hardware being better. hardware owners keep trying to propagate the myth that 1 and 0s sound different rendered in one box vs another.
    Digital is Digital the same algorithms is the same algorithm. Unless you love the sound of old converters or use a console where a hardware box makes sense the UAD 224XL is a amazing

      +John Frusciante While I don't agree with you that digital is digital, I do agree with the fact that this particular plug in is - as are all UAD plug ins - the best in its category. These hardware boxes have a little more than just a DAC and some DSP to process the signal. They are full of electronics crap to shape the sound whereas your computer just has the CPU and you use your proper converters. I started out using Digidesign 882 20 IOs and was extremely unhappy. They were really really terrible. I then moved on to Prismsound ADA8 and that was a HUGE difference. Everything sounded 10 times better so no, digital was no longer the same digital :-)
      I am surprised by UAD plug ins. In my opinion there is no better. They really stand apart.

    • @GabrielXDrums
      @GabrielXDrums 5 років тому

      Lawrence O yet you contradicted yourself, UAD doesn’t run off your CPU, they’re based off the Apollo’s own DSP so therefore UAD knows what they’re doing so digital IS digital and if it’s from UAD it’s the SAME as the hardware since they’re the ones testing and making sure it passes the stages. It’s 2018, digital is and always will be digital, 1 and 0 are always going to be that, you can’t change math, it’s the one universal law that’s always existed since the dawn of time, as long as those numbers are there, it is what it is.

    that plug in sounds great. I got an original 224 and a 480L and both are much more useful than all those japanese reverbs, if vintage sound is attempted. I even prefer the 224 sometimes over the 480L. I remember times where the Nuverb (Lex 300) was the only affordable way to get rich reverbs for composers... best with DA-30 converters ;-)

    The real 224 has a control surface with physical sliders and buttons. Too bad UA does not allow MIDI control so their users can also use a physical control surface. UA seems to be in love with the idea of having to use a mouse to perform every and any parameter manipulation.

    Wow, the negaivity in here abounds!
    Why the sour grapes folks?
    This plugin sounds darn good, as close to an original as it gets.
    I have spent hundreds of hours messing with the 224 just writing presets back in the day, these are certainly a bargain by comparison, and sound very good in a mix.
    My only complaint is, I'd love to have a rack full of UAD accelerator cards, not just the two :-)

    Actually, no. If you read the manual for NS10's, it specifically states that the listener will experience a phase-shift effect if they are 'laid down'. Most people don't read the manual, though, and set them sideways b/c of the branding/writing. It's a common mistake.

    You're obviously an accomplished engineer. However this plugin sounds like any other tweeted or no. I have A/B compared this plugin to a few others and honestly the difference is only found in the edit pages. Audio difference is relative and in the mix is negligent. I have the hardware where the difference is better heard. I appreciate the time you've taken to do this and the plugin needs a tutorial, but ears be true, so much of it is great in isolation. In a mix it's like everymans own religion.

    • @anabellecurtis75
      @anabellecurtis75 9 років тому +9

      Dragon Lee Sorry but no. This plugin does not sound like other reverbs. Perhaps it does if you are using it extremely sparingly - which is not really what it's famous for lol. But there is really no other reverb on the market that will give you the kind of grainy / thick / modulating tails this thing does. It has a distinct enough sound that you can spot it in almost any production that uses it.

    • @GabrielXDrums
      @GabrielXDrums 5 років тому

      Dragon Lee talking out your ass, use it and then tell me again how it sounds like Space Designer or Realverb Pro. Or even a AKGBX spring. You’re so laughable right now it’s not even funny.

    Your products are wonderful but you really need to address the ridiculous iLok issue which forces customers to use either an (overpriced) iLok USB or the 'cloud'. It appears that some of your products can be licensed to a computer, but not all. This seems rather arbitrary and is pretty frustrating imho. Even your Customer Service have no idea why this is, which is pretty poor.
