This is one of the best productions I've seen showing and explaining the making of stone ground flour and the operation of a gristmill. Ken Koons and miller Ivan Lufrin cannot be given enough credit for doing such a masterful job!! Congrats
Thank you for this! My ancestor owned a grist mill in Windsorville (now Windsor) in York County, Pennsylvania. Doing a genealogy project and this was a perfect way to learn how it was done back in the 1800's!
Thank you for this video. I am working on some family history and my grandfather's family ran a gristmill in Ontario, Canada. I am reading my grandfather's diary and he talks about dressing the stones, fixing the dam, and several other things that you explained.
Excellent walk through of an entire Oliver Evans system. Evans held the third patent in the U.S.A. and was endorsed by George Washington who had his gristmill upgraded to an Evans system at Mt. Vernon. Many fortunes were founded on flour in the 1790's. Cool stuff.
Thank you for revealing the origins of miller's lingo, "run-of-the-mill" and "nose to the grindstone" etc. Very informative video, relaxed presentation. Congrats from a Hockley In The Hole kid.
Great video! It is fascinating to see how flour was produced before there were steam engines or electric power. Great that some aspects of maintenance (stone dressing and lubrication of the moving parts) was also included.
"Run of the mill" and "Nose to the Grind Stone" two saying's that I used all my life and never knew where they originated from. Thank you so much for sharing this video for I've never seen a Grist Mill before and I now feel almost like I've been to one in person.
Awesome!!! Im working on restoring a 1776 grist mill which may be the oldest in the united states you can look it up by typing in klingerstown pennsylvania mill and a page called mahantango heritage will pop up The mill is located along the mahantango creek and uses the pine creek for back up if the mahantango goes dry
BUENO DE VERDAD PUEDO SENTIR CONTENTO POR PODER APRECIAR EL TRABAJO DE NUESTROS ANCESTROS CON RESPECTO A LOS TRABAJOS REALIZADOS CON MUCHA VOCASION FELICITASIONES
Trying to find a video about the old gold rush day grist mill north of the bay area ? The only one I've seen on it , was from the California Gold series, but so far nothing on UA-cam. In fact any old tech mill, saw or grist or whatever, I'd like to know about. So feel free to enlighten me . thanks in advance !
The "Original wheel" would have been mounted on the piston pump as a combination pulley speed reduction from the motor on the ground by the wheel, to the wheel shaft, then gear speed reduction to the pump. it would have been interesting to look for name plate data on the motors.

Fantastic! I love to see these objects made hundreds of years ago in working order, it makes me feel connected.

I certainly did enjoy watching your teaching us the old ways of milling. So fascinating and enjoying to watch and learn. Thank you and God Bless
Thank you for making sense of the phrases, run of the mill and keeping his nose to the grindstone!

Great video!! A really nice looking old mill..
Loved the way you use the phrases that originated with the profession!
i hope more people take the time to learn the trade from these old timers, keep the old ways alive just in case we need it some day.
They have many events at the mill, I live nearby. They have a corn roast in August and a Micro brew festival in September. You can tour the mill.
Thank you for the video.. My 8 yr old daughter needed to write about this and the video helped...
Very informative! Thanks!

Do you see a lot of deer around Union Mills?

This mill was built long before electric motors were invented.
I was being a wise guy
Hello sir. Great work. Are you still operating it today? (2019)
Yes they are still making flour today.
💪👍👍👍👍
Do both stones turn, or just one?
Only the top stone.
look how much polution we could avoid if we turned all electical mills back into water mills .....
