That's when we figured out that it was pretty much ok to stand and watch the bombs come down, you just had to get down immediately after. By the way, I was an Anvil guy too (Aco), but 3rd platoon.

I got to see six Taliban vaporized by a 1000lb bomb airburst. Two of the group lived though and made it close enough to a village where they couldn’t be targeted. We had tracked the group for several miles before clearance came through and Viper was on station to deliver...Predator downlink gave us ringside seats.

Yeah... Air Force doesn't keep 1000 lb GP warheads in inventory. Only 500-pound Mk82 and 2000-pound Mk84. Navy uses the 1000-pounders. And I don't think the 500 pound JDAMs were fielded yet in 2003, but I could be wrong. Thought it was all GBU-31 back then

The Navy and Marines are the only services that use the 1000 pound Mk83 (they wanted a bomb bigger than Mk82, but that required less shipboard storage space than Mk84). So those are almost certainly 2000-pound GBU-31. The first JDAMs fielded were the 2000 pound GBU-31 variant
