- In this segment the Quest party's toughest and coolest character is traced back to a real life tough guy actor of the time. The entire 2 hour plus documentary is now on Rapidshare for downloading at my blog: chriswebber037....
Race Bannon, the cat so cool, even the parody of his show acknowledges his badassery.
Brock Sampson agree
Before Sonny Crockett and Rip Wheeler there was Race Bannon.
Race was always my favorite because he was the tough guy of the group.
he never lost a fight
Race Bannon was the most bad ass cartoon character of all time. He was kind of like James Bond. He must have been ex special forces.
That's explained in the exposition Quest file review scene in episode 1. Race was assigned to Quest and Jonny as a bodyguard after Benton's wife was murdered if I recall the implied setup.
Just plain cool and unapologetic series...but it was a prime time series in 64.
Since this is 1964, I believe Race is suppose to be a former Marine, Paratrooper or Ranger.
One of the best to with some would say.
Race Bannon was one of my first crushes as a girl in the 60's and still is, lol...along with Racer X. Now there's a crossover episode I'd like to see, since they were both govt agents.
Racer X was the best--remember the episode when he finished a race on only three wheels, and came in second place only a whisper behind Speed Racer?
And one of MY first crushes was Jade, Race Bannon's girlfriend.
@@fjtalleyauthor2242 Jade was also one of my first crushes.
Race Bannon's was Brock Samson, Swedish Murder Machine, inspiration!
Lol, Bannon, Brock, Pence, it all makes sense
When you take Mike Roads looks and voice....he could have played Felix Liter, CIA agent in any James Bond movie along with Sean Connery. But the chose Jack Lord ( later to star in Hawaii 5 - O ).
As a kid I thought Race Bannon was a light skinned Black guy. The Jeff Chandler reference in fitting. He was a badass.
4:58 When I began watching Jonny Quest in the early seventies (around 1971-73 as a rough guesstimate) on my hometown ABC station, it was on Sundays at seven thirty in the morning, and I remember they didn't have the sponsor announcement, but it had the very beginning of Race's announcement left in the opening credits. Until watching your documentary, chrisweb, I always thought that Race was just saying the title of the show.
Really enjoying the documentary so far.
I was fortunate to catch it when it first aired on _Primetime Television._ Six PM Pacific time it was, and I got hooked straight off by the action, and _especially_ the music scoring.
I remember seeing Jonny Quest on Sunday mornings as well. However, it seemed like they played the same episodes over and over. It wasn't until I purchased the DVD set that I was able to see every episode.
chrisweb037 Did the Best History of Jonny Quest. I Bet Race Bannon is a U.S. Marine Fighter Pilot.
US foil fencer (Bronze medalist Rio O-Games...among other achievements) Race Imboden was, in fact named after Race Bannon.
Man... Mike Road had the voice...and the look. It's amazing he never became a big star in front of the camera.
David Smith I find that amazing too. Mike Road was cool as hell!
Another guy who had the look and voice was Paul Frees, when he was the news reporter in the 1950s War of the Worlds. He voiced Cap'n Crunch and a lot of other Jay Ward cartoon characters. He made so much money doing voice overs that he bought an island. Can't remember where that island is now.
I think some producer should make a live-action movie version of Jonny Quest. I'd love to see it, just for the hell of it.
@@DavidSmith-xs3or ; Maybe he moved the island.
While Mr. Road did have a very busy voice over career continuing with Hanna-Barbera. He had two other very famous roles as Zandor leader of The Herculoids and as John Butler in the Valley of the Dinosaurs. Along with a number of appearances on H-B shows far too many to list here. I have to agree as well he really did not get the movie or television fame he could have.
Race Bannon is right up there with Racer X from Speed Racer. Both are cool tough guys who would probably make a good team if there was a Speed Racer/ Jonny Quest crossover.
Race Bannon and Jezebel Jade bedroom scene kids watching it may not have noticed but the parents did don't think a stink got raised about it, though.
I would definitely cast George Clooney as Race Bannon.
Nope....in my JQ...Clooney would be Benton Quest..I'd get Thomas Jane to play Race..imho of course;)
+dyrstraights I agree. Jane would make a great Race Bannon.
Jane is too old now to play Race. Need a younger actor
steve mcqueen could have played him
John Hamm would make a great Race Bannon

Never anything about the red Race Bannon shirt (Goes back 100-200 years to fire fighters, police, cowboy shirts.)
When I was in second grade (1968-69), I wished for a Race Bannon shirt with all the hope I had. Looking back, I'm sure it would have done much to accentuate my little Pixie-Stick arms, and provided me with the sought after Race Bannon effect. I still have Pixie-Stick arms, and I still want that shirt.
I hope you get one. Something similar is offered by cowboy outfitters, but given Race Bannon's popularity, you'd think the shirt would be ... available, at least as a sewing pattern.
Given the popularity of Race Bannon, never understood why his red shirt didn't catch on at least as a sewing pattern.
Thanks. My "bucket list" is a modest one, but a Race Bannon shirt is on it. Second-grade dreams die hard. As proof, the picture you see is of me and my youngest daughter, roller skating. I always wanted to learn to skate, and when she said she wanted lessons at the local rink, I signed up, too. Not bragging, mind you, but I was easily the tallest student in the beginner class.
Ha, ha. Thank you for the lovely picture, glad you're sharing roller skating with your daughter (tall and small)! We grew up next door to some former Ice Capades members (my grandparents' age back then); the husband made an ice rink for us in our yard and taught us to skate initially. We also went on to the local rink. My brother got into ice hockey, taught his kids (a boy and a girl); they spent a lot of quality time together over the years on both ice hockey and soccer. His daughter just recently wound up her ice-hockey "career" at university level. Time with kids is precious and goes so fast.
So interesting, thank you!
Fique de Olho, Timoneiro! Milhares e Milhares de Algas no Mar de Sargaço! Anos 2022 ... 2999 #DER #SABESP Governo Roberto/Paulo Maluf nao aceitam... kkkkkkkkk...
WTF,Race Chase, glad that didn't work out. Sounds like a down home quarterback playing for Hickum University.
May Mike Road who voiced Race Bannon RIP. Passed away 4/14/2013 at age 95.
He did a guest episode on I Dream of Jeanie as Eden's ideal man to make Tony jealous. He looked like his Race Bannon character. Definitely a bad ass,
@@tombucsfan666I didn't know that actor Mike Road had passed away . Sir you and all the other Johnny Quest actors made my childhood happy . You lived a full and long life and your talents were truly appreciated by me , and countless others . May your spirit forever Rest In Peace 🥹 .
This show, looking at it from hindsight, was a combination of James Bond, which influenced a lot of tv shows back then and a predecessor to The Incredibles...minus any super heroes. I could see how the Incredibles producers were influenced by both. That movie, even though it's animated, has a cool 60s James Bond/Jonny Quest feel and atmosphere.
Mike Road should have been chosen for Steve McGarrett.
race was a bad mo fo.
That Bewitched episode is when Aunt Clara summoned Ben Franklin and he stole a fire truck and Mike played the prosecutor Mike also played Tony Millionaire in a great episode of I Dream of Jeannie it was titled "How do you compete with Superman" it had Mike as Mr. Perfect because Jeannie was lonely whenever Major Nelson had to go to work or up into space on a mission so she blinked up Tony Millionaire and Mike was great in that fun part.
And the announcer for many seasons of Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY. The announcer for the other seasons was John Stephenson who was the voice of BENTON QUEST!
This is surprisingly well edited for a video from 2008
I have just been informed that the entire Jonny Quest Documentary has just been posted in the newsgroup ALT.BINARIES.MULTIMEDIA.CARTOONS.
This is the full resolution version of the entire two hour and twenty minute program and it looks like the same high quality file that I had to break up in parts and reduce the picture quality to get it on UA-cam.
Best,
Chris Webber
Every man wants to be him
Every woman want to be WITH him
Even his name is badass
I forgot what a wise ass Race was.
Y'know, a lot of tall, granite-chin actors have a hard time keeping up the tough guy image. They get their feelings hurt, too, but they can't show it.
increhible... una verdadera coleccion de jonny quest... un trabajo muy elaborado que deberia salir en television sin lugar a dudas
Archer would be a good choice in help fighting crime
I wonder if Doug Wildey might also have been influenced by Richard S. Prather's popular "Shell Scott" books, about a fun-loving LA detective with close-cropped hair and eyebrows so blond, they were nearly white.
I remember when an ad on Johnny Quest plugged the sneakers Johnny wore. I am sure that those sneaker became very popular among the young boys like myself who were watching the show.
Wow, your blog is seriously cool. Is this episode (and any others) still available for download?
I just read here in the comment section that the actor who did the voice of Race Bannon supposedly passed away in April of 2013 at the age of 95 .
If this is true , then all I can say is :Sir you and all the other Johnny Quest voice actors made my childhood very happy .
You lived a full and long life and your talents were truly appreciated by me and countless others . Mike Road Sir , may your spirit forever Rest In Peace 🥹 .
Race bannon fits him very well! Bad ass!!!😁
"That's the oven timer. The cakes all baked."
Its amazing how my son looks like Race Bannon!!!
Hmmm. I didn't realize he was a traitor.
Race Chase? Yikes.
Looks a lot like Mike Pence to me........
Nice work.
i cant believe dwayne johnson will be playing him in the movie called, ofcourse jonny quest starring Zac Efron as Jonny!! XD
Race Chase season 3 please.
Ok
The Rock is going to play Race Bannon in the new Johnny quest movie
John Cena would be a better choice for Race Bannon.
@@gregoryhainsworth2663 Former V.P. Mike Pence has the Look.
...Race Bannon is Mike Pence...Vice president Mike pence - He is awesome!...
