Of course, Artie was never going to allow Helen to take this one at a more relaxed tempo, which might seem more appropriate, but still the masterful vocalist managed an exquisite chorus, doing full justice to De Lange's wonderful lyric. Tony Pastor's bridge and Cliff Leeman's support throughout are excellent.

I enjoy this version very much. It's pure dance music, played at a perfect dance tempo, for a time when social dancing was a common pastime. When I hear Shaw's arrangement of Deep in a Dream, I picture a ballroom, with elegantly dressed people swaying to the music. To me, that quality makes it intensely evocative of the era. Everybody likes something different, right?

@@stevewood7598 Indeed -- and the world is a much more interesting place for its widely ranging artistic views. I do love this side, and was merely making playful allusion to Artie's notorious tolerance, at best, for vocalists; he, it seems, never wanted to make a showcase for them, as, say, Tommy Dorsey did.
