@@FullInstall I quite enjoyed it myself too! Loaded with style and atmosphere with a great lead performance Niamh Algar. Would make for a good pairing with Saint Maud.
@@GoldenGyroBalls She's tremendous in The Virtues if you haven't seen it. Yeah it would pair well, or with anything dark and British, which is basically Ben Wheatley.
Was really thrown by the song choice for the ending of this movie. It was also fully featured in that pivotal scene in A Field in England. I think it’s called Black Mass by Chernobyl.
This was a smart play on video nasty and the mind's ability to edit out / censor content - with an over the top ending making exactly this point for both its protagonist and the viewers. Love this meta shit!
just worth mentioning that i think it's pretty cool how much detail robbie is prepared to give to justify his angle on this. if it were my film, i'd certainly feel better about that being the case.
Really enjoyed this, had a worry midway that it might go off track , but the last 15mins or so more than make up for that , loved the end, good stuff 👍
This was one of the most "knowing" films I've ever watched. It felt like it was written by very intelligent video nasty fiends who were addressing the issue in a very even handed ( conciliatory?) way. Also, I'd love to know if Michael Smilie "accidentally " slipped into a Mark Cousins impression. Fear is in the soul. Mr Reviewer man
Just finish watching Beau is Afraid -- A film criticized by some viewers for being longer than it should (almost 3 hours), before watching this film. Yet despite this one only having not even half of Beau is Afraid's runtime, it felt much more empty.
Well worth a watch, and a great calling card for the director, but a wee bit over hyped. Will look forward to her next feature. It constantly threatened to up the ante but never really reached the levels of say Ben Wheatley's "Kill List" which its atmosphere reminded me of sometimes.
@@turnipjuice2626 Yes, he's not reviewed it on the radio show yet but the five-star review in The Observer is no surprise given the positive things he's been saying about it for weeks.
Can we have another Hereditary style Kermode vs Collin showdown? That debate was immense and would love to see how they lock horns over this film!
Mark never gets to review the movies he wants to talk about the most.
He did a podcast interview with the director not too long ago, so fingers crossed he can talk about it again when he comes back.
@@GoldenGyroBalls Yeah that's what got me excited to see it! Top film.

Strong and thorough review from Robbie Collin!

The track is called 'Chernobyl' and it's by Blanck Mass.
Great track
Agreed. I saw this a while back and I wanted to love it. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

excellent point, I noticed Gaspar Noe in there, but did want the screen to spin like his camera work

When's Mark back?
Have been asking myself the same question for 3 weeks now...
When will Kermode review Possum?
I had a plot for this film in my head 20 years ago, unfortunately I'm not a film director
Directors direct, screenwriters write the story
@@mooseratt I'm not a screenwriter either
Probably a sign you could be!

It's mainly only been over hyped by Dr K. Not many other reviewers have been quite as enthusiastic.
@@EppyGibbon Its had quite a few glowing reviews, but it's a solid and interesting one for me!
@@turnipjuice2626 I enjoyed it a lot but I'm not quite as sold on it as those glowing reviews.
@@SkinnyEMedia I think we all know our James Fermans from our Uma Thurmans here... I just want less homage and more fromage from my horror flicks tbh.
Just loved it. Full stop.
I agree with this review except for the fact that for me the ending is terrifying and makes up for it a lil
This movie slowly went nowhere. Not even Michael Smiley could save it.
I'd love Mark to review this on video
I think I enjoyed it more than Robbie but less than Mark.
did mark review this ?

great non obvious British Horror

It sounds so boring. I'll give this a miss.
Looked like a bbc two drama.dull.no suspense.snail paced.i dont get the hype for this at all.
