The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

He had terrific control over his voice, the emotion and intonations he puts into his words really convey what he wants the audience to feel so well.

I saw him last night in Clearwater Fla. (3-8-24) and at 82 he still has the ladies swooning! Outstanding entertainer who gets into the crowd and makes everyone feel welcome and happy they are there! I had NO idea just how many songs he wrote for so many people! " I did it My way" Frank Sinatra and the list goes on and on! GO SEE HIM if you can! :)

This was Paul's first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Thank you so much for posting it! His second appearance, in which he also sang "Diana" has been a common video due to its inclusion in a "Best of Sullivan" show but this one is extremely rare, and I've always wanted to see it. Filmed at the 1958 Ice Capades. Please also post the Chordettes singing "Just Between You and Me" on this episode. Also, please post more '50's pop singers!
Always loved his voice, met him in Las Vegas in 1990 , one of his shows, and I danced with him, thought i was going to die ! He song lay your head on my shoulder!! Star struck 💫, almost forgot my husband was with me, 😂 ❤ he still was great !

Ed Sullivan must have thought that the fact Paul Anka was appearing for the first time on his show on exactly the same date as Elvis Presley's first had the year before, Sept 9, when ratings are highest as it is the start of the TV year, that he was going to break Elvis' record, not just because "Diana" was the Billboard #1 hit that same week.but because there were as well 4 million MORE TV homes in 1957 than there were in 1956. But that was not to be. Anka garnered a huge 48,100,000 viewers for Sullivan with a 41.1 rating and 15.1 million homes reached, against the humongous 60,710,000, 57.1 rating and 24 million homes reached by Presley the year before. The record was only broken by the Beatles on 9 February 1964, 73 million viewers, when there were the same number of networks, but 16 million MORE TV homes.

Paul was and still is one hell of a talent, although this sounds like a cute little song it's a total fucker to sing let me tell you, I sometimes add this one to my set when I do my shows and I only add it when I'm feeling in top form because that 3 step transition through the notes leading up to "Diana" is a killer, for a young lad of 16 to write this kinda song is an incredible feat that should never be underestimated
