This song and Shoshana is a match made in heaven. Her voice and story telling really brings out what is a great song Plus Jess just makes it all the better
F******CK!!!!!!! No words, no words... just goose spots all over my spine and tears in my eyes... Love, love Shoshana and of course, thanks you Jess, again and again!
💜💜💜 This performance is an experience unlike any other. The way she just lets it hang in the air at the end...there’s so much space she could’ve filled there. But I think she felt that energy and just needed to let it be. Absolutely stunning!
I'm glad you got around to listening to this. When I provided the link a few months ago, I was surprised to see you respond, and your reaction was on par with mine when I first saw her sing this. IMHO Sho is a singers singer, and she is very very smart. People who are professional singers speak about her with awe and admiration. People like Eden Espinosa and Morgan James, to Ariana Grande are fans. Most people don't understand the skill and training it takes to do what she does, and make it look so effortless. This particular performance is astonishing for a number of reasons, and you could devote hours breaking it down, and I really appreciate your observations, I have watched this countless times, and you pointed out things I never noticed before. Her specific vowel modifications, her silent "N's" I never registered before. But I think it's important to point out a few other things. First, it's important to remember, this was recorded LIVE! There was no rerecording, no lip syncing, no post ADR. She did this on a stage live without a net! Second, this song is a summery of all the vocal techniques I can think of. She put them all in there, from sub harmonics to whistle tones, from growls to squillo. From mixed belting to head voice, its all in there, but it doesn't come off as a vanity showcase, everything she does is in service to the song. As you point out, she commits emotionally to everything she sings, and it carries us along. Her passion and focus is so intense that we all lean in, and are on the edge of our seats to hear what she will do. Her charisma and dedication to the craft is inspiring, humbling, and transcendent Also, she is super smart, in how she presented this. She slowly builds up to it, teasing us with a few notes and sounds until BAM she blows the doors off the place. A less confident singer would get to the climax to early which would leave them no place to go. In her arrangement, it is deliberately structured to build up to a high point, and then gently let us back down. It takes us on a journey. The last thing I need to point out is that she does this all on her own. She doesn't have an agent, or manager. She creates a gig, hires the band, books the halls, produces and does her own arrangements. She has charted her own path from her roots on Broadway as the first replacement Elphaba taking over for Idina Menzel to touring with Post Modern Jukebox. She refuses to be pigeonholed and can work in a HUGE variety of styles. Jason Robert Brown lists her as his favorite collaborator. All this is to say that she is a true professional, and is an inspiration to all of us in the performing arts.
I don’t know how I could ever see her live, I’d be either dumbfounded and sit there with my mouth hanging open, or be shouting. My God she is unbelievable! I’d seen her with Superfruit, but I had no idea…

@@jessicasopranonotes Yesss, I second Stewie on that!! I think YOU - of all reactors - would truly appreciate the subtle beauty in her 'Finishing the Hat' cover. It's not a huge vocal, & I wasn't even familiar w the song/play until I heard it, but her storytelling still moved me (& her!) to tears.
You are so thorough in your analysis. Shoshana's voice and technique are ethereal. From the changes in timbre, dynamics and stylistic choices that just brings you into the story, she is just phenomenal. As a trombone player, I resonate with the way she controls her instrument; she is highly attuned to its subtleties and spends her vocal currency wisely to captivate the audience. I agree with you on paying the top dollar! She commanded the stage, told a story with conviction, and pushed the band, who supported her masterfully through every measure. As one who has come lately to the party, this was an amazing performance and your reaction gave it its due. Not only did Shoshana provide an amazing, totally integrated performance but her backing band was fully engaged and in sync. From the piano at the start to the trumpet solos to that wonderful--and necessary--deep bass trailing piece, the band was equally up to backing this top-shelf singer. It was a *total* performance by everyone on stage. I wish I could have been in that audience!
💜 I love your reactions & am Sho-obsessed, but I esp love what you said re: how it almost sounds improvised. I think it's bc - even though it's a cover she has sung many times - she's masterful at fully entering into the emotion of a moment & letting it inform the way she flows through a song. She's technically impeccable, but my favorite part of watching her is how she completely transports herself into the world of every song she writes or performs, so it's always a new journey.

I would like a double analysis of two versions of "all to me". 1- the version Shoshana recorded with Scott Hoying 2- the live version with Avery Wilson. The two versions are striking good and dissimilar, conveying different meaning with the same lyrics. And the cause is not just vocal choices. In the live version it's as if Shoshana and Avery really "gives all to" each other and in the middle of the performance there is no more characters but two souls transparently "giving" the music. Jess, thanks for this review, Shoshana is a great singer. You don't have to review it, check out Shoshana Bean's version of "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" on her album "Spectrum". She's wonderful, and the band could not be better.
I love this song so much and I love that you were able to analyze anything about this because the first time I heard it I couldn’t get words out. I would highly recommend Morgan James singing Dream On with Post Modern Jukebox. In fact, Shoshana and Morgan were in an all female production of Jesus Christ Superstar (Morgan’s Gethsemene is perfection).
Love to see people reacting to Shoshana! It’s so nice to hear someone breaking it down too! Please react to her singing “ain’t no way” because it stands up next to this💕
Something that I've noticed is common in jazz and blues music vocals is they often modify vowels to make it sound somewhat more "husky" without making the vocalist strain. It's also common to leave off consonants at the end of words, such as the n's because it doesn't necessarily effect the integrity of the lyric, in fact, it makes it sound that much more jazzy.
Yes!!!!!!! One of the best displays of vocal prowess in the last decade

Please advise if you are still interested in reacting to that magnificent Soprano prodigy Amira Willighagen. You originally ( some weeks ago) were very interested, so I’m not sure whether to-remind you or not.
Cheers, Graeme. ps. I recommend “ Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church “. It’ll knock your socks off.
I was *really* moved by her performance! Just brilliant...Mmm! Mmm!
Jess, thanks for this review, Shoshana is a great singer. You don't have to review it, check out Shoshana Bean's version of "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" on her album "Spectrum". She's wonderful, and the band could not be better.
Great recommendation, thank you!
This is my kind of music, sung by one of my favorite artists 🎨 don't know how to leave a purple heart .lol
lol! It took me a while to find the emoji too. Idk why the hearts are so far down in the emoji library. But here's one for you 💜
I love this song so much and I love that you were able to analyze anything about this because the first time I heard it I couldn’t get words out. I would highly recommend Morgan James singing Dream On with Post Modern Jukebox. In fact, Shoshana and Morgan were in an all female production of Jesus Christ Superstar (Morgan’s Gethsemene is perfection).
Also, I’d love to see you talk about Beth Hart with Joe Bonamassa singing I’d Rather Go Blind. It’s another masterpiece.
Amazing.
