- There are many ways to get from Embarcadero in San Francisco, to the Caltrain Station on 4th and King streets. Of course, you can drive, walk it, or, like us, take MUNI, the San Francisco public transit option. With MUNI you have options too. We chose to take the MUNI Metro under Market Street, connecting to the new Central Subway. This gave us an excellent comparison of rapid transit infrastructure technologies from the 1970’s and today.
The trip took about a half hour overall, including the waits at Embarcadero and Union Square stations. This was on a Sunday, so I would expect that the weekday frequencies should make the trip take less time. Still, it was an easy commute, albeit with a long connecting walk, and featured the latest MUNI infrastructure.

Nice video! From Embarcadero taking the N to 4th and King would have been faster to Caltrain, and would also remove the need for a transfer.
Concerning the T line transfer at Powell, I timed it from BART using the eastern exit. The BART-Muni transfer only takes about 2-3 minutes. And most of that time is spent on escalators rather than walking. I do this transfer all the time now. It's pretty nice once you get used to walking to the last escalator at the back of the platform.
Yes, in fact when I planned this trip, I wanted to take the MUNI N to 4th and King from Embarcadero, which would have been a lot quicker. However, I then realized that the Central Subway will already be open by the time we're going to travel, so I wanted to get a taste of the new infrastructure.
Thank you!
And also yes ( :-) ) to your other comment. To make for a quicker transfer, travel in the back of a BART train, head up two levels, and the connector to the Central Subway will be a short walk.
@@BordRestaurant the travel between Yerba buena and 4th and King should be way faster when they finally install the new communication based train control over the next few years. *Supposedly* it will remove the need for trains to stop at the portal entrance and shouldn’t stop at stoplights either… I say supposedly because there is a good chance they mess it up.
I was part of the communications-based train control system design and development for the MUNI Metro back in the late 1980's and 90's, and it was a challenge. But, in the end, the MUNI Metro train control works well, so I hope that this new addition will succeed also.
You aren't kidding. That is quite a walk from the Powell Street platform over to the other side leading into the new T Platform. I've never tried it yet though your video did a great job describing this to me. Thanks
My goal was to show the entire trip, from Embarcadero to the Caltrain station via the new tunnel, so I'm happy that helped you visualize the details, including that long walk.
@@BordRestaurant Living locally honestly I believe you described it well using your video approach. Thank you.
That’s a long walk from Lowell to central station !
The connection is definitely long, but doable, if you plan ahead with enough time.
