  • Video from GWOT shows US Army soldiers using the APOBS, or Anti-Personnel Obstacle Breaching System to clear an IED. Most will be familiar with the MICLIC, or MIne Clearing LIne Charge. This would effectively be it's baby. The parachute at the tail-end of the line keeps the line charge from bunching, affording maximum depth of the line to clear the obstacle.

0:12 incase if someone wondering, just Right side of that RCWS/Mounted Browning
That straight Baseball like object is Sound Locater..
Basically in an ambush Having perfect and precise location of enemy is important, this device tell's U the weapon firing Location of enemy.
This helps a lot during Ambush where enemy is well Hidden. U can suppress Enemy allowing precise fire and More time to aid ur Friendly injured troops.❤

I'm a vet of Afghanistan (got out in 2011 -- deployed in 06 & 09) and we didn't have sound locators back then. I wish we had, sounds like they would have been pretty useful at times!
Question - how does it indicate where the gunfire is coming from? And does it help locate enemy fire if the enemy is in an elevated position? (Up along a ridge line or hilltop?)

@@chrisburke624 they were deployed in Afghanistan in 2012 so you just missed them.
Firefly I think was the name.
Edit: “FireFly Acoustic Threat Detection System”
Apparently used acoustic and electro-optical sensors - seeing muzzle flash is much faster than waiting on a sound wave, right‽
Far as I remember it was a good idea but could be jenky asf, and the static ones worked better - used in most US cities by law enforcement

I was in the Marine Corps and did route clearance. We had to escort an Army unit who had these. The Army Lt said we got a boomerang hit. Our Lt was whats that? Then he told us it gave a direction. And azimuth to enemy fire. Our Lt's reply was. We don't get cool stuff like that.

A rocket pulls a hose full of explosives out of two backpacks. The parachute stops the whole thing from going too far. The system is designed for clearing small minefields or concertina wire type obstacles.
