"Each tree that there is, there is a turnip that isn't" had me dying lol
I'm pretty sure Confucius said that during the Ming Dynasty... and it is as true today as it was back then.
I read something a while ago (can't remember where) about the lost art of playing single player games together - something anyone growing up w brothers/sisters will find familiar. this video reminds of the frustration/fun of trying to explain to someone else what you want them to do. thanks for the terrific video
I realize this is an old comment, but you might be talking about nakeyjakey's video "the death of couch multiplayer" which used almost that exact line
Dude, I don't know the video, but I know exactly what you're talking about. Personally, I think it's just reborn in a new way. I have friends, and we all like to call each other over discord and stream games that we're playing for the other to watch. We usually have a really good time doing it too :)
I genuinely think that's what let's plays are. Just that experience distilled down to the barebones, most interesting moments.
Yeah my cousin and I used to play everything together. Animal Crossing on the GameCube together! Hours of it! There's no big decisions to figure out together like when we played most singleplayer games. We played it so freaking much and then we'd pace around the basement conjuring up ideas for new features if they made a new animal crossing and then we pretended to be in animal crossing sometimes when we played outside.
My brother and I still play single player games together, there was like a phase where we didn't
I wanna say when we were teenagers? Point is we really enjoy SDV, Undertale, Cat quest, animal crossing and similar sort of single player games together
I still remember one winter where we played cat quest and each time one of us died we'd swap and the other person would play until they died
I like how the answer to "How I Found the Fun" was just Griffin being like "Okay step 1: turn on the game, k? Step 2: now....play it."
"Hey, why don't you just go to bed... this day is ruined" Griffin saying exactly what I think every night.
big ass fucking mood
too relatable my dude
What amazed me about this video is not how bad Justin is at SDV, it's how bad Griffin is at giving relevant, helpful advice.
Loved every second of it.
Polygon.. playing on the expertly built PCs by the Verge :-D
Griffin is just used to playing while Justin commentates (see: almost every episode of Monster Factory)... doing the opposite... is pretty hard for both of 'em, at least with a game Justin isn't good at yet. ;)
It wasn't too bad but i was screaming about griffin's aversion to fishing he could've made so much money
"Looking for a buddy to bring me a potato. Please, god." That made me laugh so much
There's one simple rule for all Harvest Moon games and games like them, no matter if you played one before or not: Prepare to suck the first year. Every game has maybe a similar gameplay but the mechanics are different as well as locations, things are removed, others added. Even those who played many HM games need a bit to figure out how things work this time.
So, if you're new, don't be too ambitious during the first year, take it easy, explore, prepare to screw up here and there. You'll notice that things suddenly fall into place when the 2nd year starts. Or if you want to start over, you'll be surprised how different the game suddenly feels compared to the first attempt.
and most of all: no need to rush! The game is meant to put no pressure and everything will go smoothly eventually.
That's what I love about Stardew. It's at whatever pace you need it to be.
Very, very true. My first year in stardew valley was very rough. Tons of my crops died, I didnt know how to fish, and I constantly died in the mines. I'm currently replaying the first year and in the second month I already have a working chicken coop and I make around 5k each day. It literally just takes time to get used to. It can be super frustrating that first year though
yes take it easy. my idea of "easy" is making everything as efficient as possible. i have a full winery going by the end of year 2. and a collection of rare seeds im planning to make into one giant crop once i have enough
@@YayoiFujoshi No! I need 5 million by the end of year one or else I'll die!
I'll tell you how you have fun in Stardew Valley...listen to the McElroy Brothers in the background! MBMBAM makes watering plants less of a chore I tell you!
+TheTinkerThomas I would listen to the brothers read the phonebook
That needs to be a stretch goal for one of their fun-drives!
That's what I do lol
Couldn't agree more!!!
I've now been playing SDV for a few weeks and I often rewatch/listen to this in the background while doing so. Or just to get myself into the mood to play, even. I wish there was more than one ep (like there is with Griffin and his Animal Crossing 2020 vids).

Yes, I've seen all the Spore monster factory eps, got the Space Jam aspect, etc. etc. but the specific backpack/applesauce thing... unless it's just a Griffin/Justin childhood inside joke or something...
@@gfox9295 i think its just something griff said in the moment and justin expanded on with no questions asked
i've watched this so many times and only just realized that "that's your dad, clint" is referring to the actual name of the character is which is, in fact, clint, and not clint mcelroy

i laughed so hard when justin couldn't find the library and griffin is just losing his mind esp since justin made a comment abt it not too long ago

@@TheNicolexoxo "it was like above me and to the right when I was on the way to the blacksmith... now it's not above me and to the right anymore... where... what do?" Justin's 3d brainmapping of the game is not yet complete. ;)

This is exactly like my sister trying to teach me to play literally anything. Let me tell you, Portal 2 multiplayer was ROUGH.
Lmfao
It was nice watching a video where someone didn't know what they were doing - like an average person.
Agree! I've been a bit intimidated to try this as there seem to be so many things to do
Goomashroom Justin McElroy is incredibly smart. He's one of the head people at Polygon.
Don't forget the 15% off at ALL Sam Goody Stores™ "Goody's got it" and that he can run two miles per diem! Dude's a genius.
Anyone who has played harvest moon for at least a year (ingame of course) will likely have most of this game down. With exception to restoring the town which the game does a decent job explaining, but perhaps a bit too late in some cases for people to start planning.
You start off the game kinda weak. You are a city boy after all, not a farm boy yet. You have to come into your own. Naturally your energy is kinda low, severely limiting your options. Your levels are low so the results you get are not quite there yet. But by pulling up them sleeves and really digging in and putting a few weeks of hard work in, you can overcome that issue.
I'm new to it and this video helps more than most. Most of them are just too much and make the game seem more difficult than it is, explaining every little thing and acting like everything is an urgent matter. From what I can tell, nothing is urgent. It's a really relaxing game and you can go whatever pace you want. People play for so long and completely lose touch with what it's actually like to be going in blind, I quit the first time I tried it.
"Is that my dad" killed me
"Oh, you haven't met Pierre! What, you just thought he was some sort of vending machines for seeds? He's a human!" - This killed me cause I couldn't for the life of me figure out who was the last person I was missing, and it turned out to be PIerre XDDDD
justin: *presses the walk button*
justin: the sprint button keeps slowing me down
griffin: well there's... it's not a sprint button.
justin:
justin: hmm.
ojcorp haha well I think the game tells you it’s a sprint button (or everyone just assumes sprint = left shift) even though they auto enabled sprint. I was confused as well when I just started playing for the first time a few days ago.
Expert gamer..
@@ErkFX Yeah, I just started playing for the first time and noted the "shift = sprint" when it popped up that helpful info along with the WASD and whatever else.
Then pressed it and slowed down and was like huh... later I was in the options and saw auto-run was on by default.
Just gotta change that helpful pop-up in the intro to "shift = sprint/walk slow (depending on your auto-run setting)" or something...
I need a whole series of this
Amen.
I was struggling to “get” this game until I watched this video. Serves as a great tutorial for those of us who similarly messed up the first 30 minutes of the game and quit in frustration.

How much farm wisdom is in this video?
Good question. I'm wondering the same question. ( before watching)
the game is like 25% in early , 35% when u start to get in touch whit the game and like 80% when u finish the game

It’s fascinating to see a taz fan that doesn’t Hoover up McElroy content like a vacuum cleaner with a Zelda tattoo.
Fishing and blowing crap up with bombs in the mines are about the most fun to be had in this game, I freaking love every aspect of the game though, very rewarding. I love giving people gifts and getting the cool little cutscenes with them. Shane is one of the best, because his life is in ruins and having you for a friend helps him turn his life around.
For someone with over 500 hours in stardew his is truly painful to witness

"is that my dad?" this was my exact reaction to Clint on my doorstep "is that Justin and Griffin's dad?" lol
I've loved the Macelorys for years and have become obsessed with Stardew Valley in the past month and this is maybe the best content ever.
Seeing Stardew Valley in the title I was so hoping it would by my McElboys and I was not disappointed what a blessing this video is
god hearing griffin rap nicki added ten years to my life
Personally, I found the fun in Stardew valley by figuring things out by myself. On the first couple of days, I explored the town which seemed a lot bigger then it does now. I saw what crops had more worth, I explored the mine at my own pace and just found it relaxing. I don't think that this game is the type you'd want someone to explain to you, but rather something that you yourself should explore.
Hello from almost two years in the future. I'd like to see this being revisited with the new updates, and see if any of these steps need to be altered.
Honestly this video is making me want to play Stardew Valley all over again. Like Justin reminds me so much of my first time and how I grew to love the game
Thanks guys, this was mega helpful as well as being entertaining as always.

"Oh. Sorry. Are these your rocks?"
- Jason Mendoza. And also Justin McElroy.
This was anxiety inducing. Curious to know if Justin has improved in the year.
When your dad showed up, I laughed so loud, a coworker peaked over my cub and looked at me weird.
I've just very recently got into this game and it's my go to therapeutic stress relieving pastime, and i get to WATCH MY FAVORITE BOYS playing it too??? my heart is soaring
This was pretty interesting because I'm very new to this game and it didn't interest me at first since I played years worth of Harvest Moon on the SNES as a kid, but I'm starting to get the itch back for this type of game, especially since it seems to have been done right.
I can't believe I just found the McElroy brothers on UA-cam playing my favorite game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why didn't I know about this????
welcome to a special video game themed farm wisdom
I did a real 180 on stardew valley. I tried it twice and found it a whole lot of nothing, but so many people liked it that I tried it a third time. Once you get into it, it's a fantastic game. Actually one of my favorite harvest moon style games I've played.
This transported me back to being a real little kid standing on the rungs of the chair that my older brother by ten years played games like Lemmings, Mad Professor and some boring game about landing a plane on our Acorn computer. He put up with a lot of questions. Sometimes I would lean over him and press my ear to his and stay like that while he played, which for all his griping about me being there, he never once mentioned being annoying.

"I tell you what, why don't you go to bed, this day is ruined" griffin talks to his big brother like my depression talks to me
This game seems SUPER relaxing
It really is most of the time. I think it's slightly less relaxing than classic Harvest Moon though because it features combat (I've rage quit a few times after not paying close enough attention to my health bar lol)
Syvelocin I've never played Harvest Moon and I only spent a couple weeks playing Animal Crossing. I think I'd enjoy watching other people play this game on Twitch than I would playing it myself

This is such a fun game and I play it all the time. I'm glad you're learning... but I do remember being like you when I first began, so I can understand totally how you're feeling. It's especially confusing if you've never played a game that's similar. But once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun. :)

😂 I had fun listening to you two.Thank you for the video I did learn a thing or two.
You should have looked at the early game again before this video. You suggested a ton of stuff that simply doesn't work yet.
The 28 people you need to meet do not include people like the Wizard or the Dwarf. It pays off to put effort in your relationship with various people in town. They'll give you goodies if they like you.
You should make sure to always have something growing and to water it every day. It's actually pretty darn fast money and you can use the rest of each day for other stuff.
Also, it's a good idea to actually drop off your items that you don't expect to need, because they take up storage. - Build multiple chests! You can plop them down basically anywhere. It might be a good idea to have some out- rather than in-door.
In the mines, energy is what you carry around food for. Don't be afraid to eat stuff. You'll get a lot farther.
It says in the top left corner what floor you are currently on and that it is a 5-increment floor was clear right away because of the very clearly visible elevator door and the ding-sound upon reaching it.
The 3x3 field isn't really that important in Stardew Valley: You can just walk through crops like they aren't even a thing. The only advantage is that certain crops have a small chance to turn into mega-crops. So you can have a huge 3x3 cauliflower or pumpkin if you plant those in a 3x3 grid.
Kram1032 I'M GONNA MAKE A FUCKING MEGA PUM0KIN HOLY SHOT
It literally does include the wizard you fucking idiot.
And 3x3 is good for mid range sprinklers.
This video and Catlateral damage give off strong as fuck sibling feels
as a longtime AC player Stardew Valley stresses me out. Time goes by so fasttttt
Also you can use the acorns and oak seeds to make field snacks, which are nice to bring into the mines.
Your dnd adventure zone podcasts were the best things I've ever listened to
I agree with Justin more hand holding is exactly what I need from this game
I just started watching this, and I gotta say, as an older sibling who can’t play video games, this is incredibly relatable
