You have done a much better job helping me understand New Historicism than my textbook did. Thank you so much for your hard work on this!
Just brilliant !! Even my professor can't explain in such way !
I loved the voice of Dodo that you frequently tried to marginalise. 😀

Such a wonderful video..Thank you so much ma'am for making this critical theory easy.
thank you, your video is very informative and well-structured
Fabulous lecture, precise, crystal clear in concept, without any deviations and relevant examples. Thank you so much. The reference books are mentioned. Kindly ignore the earlier comment. Could you please let me know how to apply this theory to a novel? Thank you so much once again. Will now regularly watch your lectures.
Thank you for letting me know that this helped you. Of course, you can apply the theory to a novel. When we attempt a close reading of the novel, not isolating it from the social, cultural, economic conditions of its production and reception, we are attempting a new historical reading. Basically, we are trying to look at how the historical factors of a work's production affect the work. For example, in Jane Eyre, the new historical reading would involve taking into account all the textual and non textual evidence to show how the novel deals with its main issues. One can study the newspapers, legal documents, other works of fiction, history books, documentaries on the age in which it was written, to get a broader picture and challenge the mainstream view of the novel, its author or the age. Also, you can investigate the factors of its reception. For example if we consider Bertha Mason as a victim of colonial and patriarchal exploitation, what made US consider these viewpoints? Observe how a new historicist reading involves investigating the critic's position and involvement as well. To sum up, we look at a work in its entirety, especially including textual and non-textual sources, and challenge the stable assumptions about the work, author or age.
Hope this helped. 🙂
Also, try to observe the novel through the lens of all the ten points I mention in the video. For example how Jane Eyre was shaped by the social factors of its production, but also how it affected the society and culture in a particular way.
@@TheLiteratureLife thank you so much for that detailed reply. I am planning to apply The forest of enchantment written by Chitra Divakaruni. If I’m not wrong I can analyse it with the 10 topics which you had given and how the character Sita was moulded Because of the societal pressure. Am I correct? I have selected this theory for my PhD studies so wanted to give it a try with this novel, before proceeding it with my PhD thesis.
@@TheLiteratureLife Is there any way through which I can have a live chat with you, Regarding this matter
I haven't read this particular novel so can't comment very authoritatively, but maybe you can argue that characters like Sita are constructed through cultural mediums like literature to create a discourse favourable for patriarchal practices. If this novel challenges the usual images of Sita, you can show how works like these try to question mainstream history or mythology and shatter dominating discourses.
Thankyou Ma'am. Really helped for exams..🙏👍♥️
excellent lecture. i have a doubt- can historical fiction be studied using this theory? For example: can this theory be used to study a fictional work (novel) based on Biblical events?
Yes, because the work nevertheless is still the product of the time in which it was created. Consider, for example, how the story of Spartacus was treated in the 1951 Howard Fast novel and in the later film and how it might be treated today in a novel and subsequent film. In either case, the treatment inevitably would reflect how the age viewed the issues of power, race and color, gender and even war itself. If nothing else, a writer has to consider the audience and its consciousness if he or she hopes to make a living as an author.
Best lecturer on New historicism ever hard...thanks mam
