Most of the time less is more, as a pianist, it's a beautiful arrangement but most people that hear this arn't going appreciate the complexity of this arrangement!

      Thanks for watching :)
I agree that less is often more. In classical rep I really favour Bach more than anything else. In the first half of this I wanted to create that feeling of 'every note matters', and then have the massive textural and emotional contrast in the second half.

All of the jazzy and softly played versions of this song, as pretty as they all are, just really fall flat for me. THIS is the way this song was meant to be played. EPIC!! Really captures the spirit of the song. Great Job.

Excellent arrangement. My 2nd favorite of this Christmas classic next to Luca Sestak's "bluesy" arrangement (also on youtube). May I offer a freindly suggestion? Post another recording without the verbal introduction. That way, listeners can add it to their Christmas/holiday playlists and have continuous music with no verbal interruption (especially at an event).

Yeah, I think a contoured chair is actually so much more comfortable than most benches, and yes, Gould was definitely an inspiration for that. Merry Christmas to you as well!

Very nice. More pianistic than vocal, but I gather that's what you were going for. Are you selling the sheet music for this anywhere? Would be fun to play it for my church (next year, lol).

    • @hanellipsis

Thanks for watching! Yeah, I wanted to make a piano concert piece out of it. In the first half, though, the little bits of counterpoint were based on choral arrangements I'm familiar with. You can download the score from my site (see 'About'). Happy holidays! 😊

  • @miltonmcbride5453

I realize you did this arrangement and I do not profess being a concert pianist but I feel compelled to give a "listener of her favorite song" word of advice. I watched and listened carefully and what I heard was my favorite Carol being butchered. I could listen only once and I feel confident it would be very beautiful if at lease one-third of the runs were eliminated. Sometimes, as I have proven many times to myself, less truly is more.

    • @hanellipsis

I just never set it to write an easy listening version for a general audience (because that's been overdone), but this recording has reached a general audience. Most listeners have really enjoyed it; the occasional one may not. You said it's your favourite song and so you're used to hearing it in a particular way.
I wrote it for myself and classical pianists like me who are familiar with the type of repertoire I'm referencing - variation technique, cadenza style, and the Prok 2 concerto cadenza specifically. And in that context, this arrangement, by concert repertoire standards, wouldn't be considered even close to maximum virtuosity or technical difficulty. The formal point of this arrangement was to have maximum textural contrast between the first and second verse; to thin out the cadenza passages would weaken the cataclysmic character of the second half.
I know it's not for everyone, but I really wrote it for a pretty niche segment: people who like this song and who also either appreciate or are familiar with some very specific aspects of classical music, namely 19th to mid-20th century concert rep. If you strongly prefer easy listening and are also not familiar with those eras and what many composers did with the development of piano writing, then my arrangement would be a mismatch for you.
So I'm afraid this is a case of the wrong piece for the wrong listener in your case. However, thanks for listening anyway!
