    It's funny I was doing this when I started learning a DAW on my own. I mix live sound, but that's obviously different. You have to start from the bottom up with gain structures and channels, then adjust overall EQ and compression on the mains last. I heard the reference a couple of times of 'top down mixing' but wasn't sure what it meant exactly.

    The finished mix sounds good but it's a tad bright.

    I don't understand this logic.. If I adjust a threshold value on a compressor within the mix bus, then start playing with the individual tracks volume input into that bus with compression applied. The compression may sound totally different or maybe the audio will not even exceed the threshold I had put into place. Same goes or all kinds of effects like distortion that relies on a drive input. Using gain plugins defeat the purpose no?

      It's a progress, so you do go back and tweak slightly any affected bus plugins, but you would already be 80% there already. I can never recall a time that I set a plug-in on a bus and never tweaked till I was happy.
      One thing I would add is if mixing live drums, that is the first thing I edit & balance to a bus.
