  • With regards to the holiday of Hanukkah, while most everyone knows about the Maccabees’ victory over the mighty Seleucid Greek Empire and the subsequent miracle of the menorah oil lasting for 8 days, less known are the parts of the story that involve Jewish power struggles, religious oppression, civil war, and a political alliance with Rome. Even though the “good guys” aren’t all good, Hanukkah remains a celebration of resilience, beating the odds, and standing up for one’s beliefs.

Hanukkah is the only Jewish Holiday I celebrate, in fact my non-jewish mother made my Secular Jewish Father celebrate Hanukkah so I stay grounded in my Jewish Heritage ✡️ but after my parents slipt, my dad stop celebrating Hanukkah and wasn't until adulthood that I started celebrating it, now every year Hanukkah keeps me connected, for 8 days I feel as though I am 100% Jewish, completely Jewish! Hanukkah was the only thing I had as a kid to keep me connected to my Jewish roots. Now, Hanukkah is the only thing that reminds me that I am Jewish, I spend so much time pretending that I am not. Hanukkah isn't just a holiday it is the only thing I had for my entire life that kept close to the Jewish People, my people!

I can 100% relate to you on this. I am 1/4 Jewish. My (mothers mother) Ashkenazi Jewish grandmother immigrated to the US from Israel in 1945 and ended up marrying and having kids with a white American guy (my grandfather).. and so Hanukkah was the one Jewish tradition that we celebrated every year that kept us all reminded that we were Jewish. Had a ccd teacher as a child as a Catholic. She was the 1st person to introduce me to Hanukkah & gave me my 1st WORD of GOD❤ Didn't realize then but a great deal of what she taught & practiced was Jewish ❤ Left the catholic church at 13, thankfully my Mom did too! And have been seeking a personal relationship with ELOHIM & YESHUA HAMACHIACH & that has adopted me into being a jew!❤ Met Corrie Ten Boom in First grade when she came to our classroom, & the holocaust was a subject my Mom always studied & taught us about! Spent my life absolutely loving the stories of when GOD really shows up & delivers HIS people! I love the story of Daniel, & it is my grandson's favorite book, as well as name. Tee hee! I also love the story of Jeremiah & others who faced all opposition by seeking GOD first & not following man, but speaking up when GOD called him to!❤ This story/history of Hanukkah is much deeper than most realize & reminds us to repent & turn from all fleshly evil ways! GOD bless & keep you & yours❤ And GOD BLESS ISRAEL 🇮🇱 ❤ HAPPY HANUKKAH ❤🎉🇮🇱❤️. Praying for VICTORY in this present day war & attack on GOD'S CHOSEN ❤

This is a very good over view with great film clips. It's a story, really, about the fight against assimilation. In the Book of the Maccabees (not part of the orthodox canon) it tells how some Jews were so desperate to fit into Hellenized society that they attempted to have their circumcisions reversed. Now that sounds painful and I doubt it really works.

i know this involves a different religion, but there are more than a few similarities and corruptions that involve chanukkah.
antiochus iv was called epiphanes, or the revealed. a play on that name in hebrew is epimines, or the madman.
epiphany is the christian celebration of what they believe is the revelation of jesus as the messiah to the magii on the 12th day of christmas, 6 jan (i'm not making the proclamation, only stating their belief)
some celebrate epiphany with a dip in an ice bath.
the polar bear plunge is closely timed with epiphany.
for that matter, christmastide itself is timed closely with a collection of celebrations centered around winter solstice, even though jesus was more likely born during sukkot.
chanukkah is about combating outside influences on judaism. SO WHAT IS THIS HANUKAH BUSH NONSENSE? what next? will we anchor the date to the gregorian calendar so that it rarely begins on the 25th of kislev?
as topol said (as the character tevye), one little time i pulled on a thread, and where did it lead? where has it lead? to this?
    stay strong. stay true.

i wish mel gibson would've completed his mission to finish his movie about the maccabees. the passion didn't stoke antisemitism...at least not for muslims...it took us into a world we kind of already knew where objectivity was possible. he would've done the same for the maccabees. he's a big fan of "good jews". it would have changed how we see groups of that time vs the progress we've made today. i think a maccabee who was brought into the present in a time machine (with a memory update) would be pleased that these two learned to live side and side and gave each other full rights to worship as needed. today, you can say i don't eat pork and though some bug you or worst case snicker....few push a plate in front of you and say "EAT!" respect my friend, has won the people's ways.

My understanding is that the Maccabees were great warriors, but lousy administrators. A bit too theocratic for the public at large. Like you say, Hanukkah is...complicated.... Enjoy the latkes!

Years ago I read both books of the Maccabees, the first book was written shortly after the revolt. There is no mention of an oil miracle in either book. They celebrated the rededication of the Temple for 8 days. Why? Because a few months earlier was the holiday of Sukkot but they couldn't observe it because of the war. So to honor Sukkot along with Shemini Atzeret they celebrated the rededication of the Temple for 8 days. So why the meshugas about the oil miracle? That fable was created by the Talmudic rabbis which was about 500 years after the event. The speculation is that the rabbis didn't want to honor a holiday celebrating a war or the Hasmonean dynasty, whom were not viewed very favorably. Another thing the Hasmonean dynasty did was combine the priestly family in the Temple to the King, that is, one and the same whereas in the past they were separate entities. No separation of church and state!

I'm a gay Jewish stoner for Jesus! I love Hanukkah. I celebrate from Hanukkah to Christmas. I call it Christmukkah! Now I have another 24 nights! Zechariah 14 is coming soon! Watch and pray, watch and pray! Stop playing games and watching tv all day! That's idolatry, btw.

Everything is correct except for the part about the olive oil miracle… That part was only added much later by the religious Jewish sages (Hazal) in order to add a religious aspect to this historical event with a tiny sprinkle of miracle from God. That’s the only reason why we now eat unhealthy yet super yummy deep fried oily food on Hanukkah… Thanks Hazal!!! 😂😂😂😂
