Carrie is navigating a bad breakup, and her smart device, Mirra, is her steadiest companion through it all. Her Mirra device does everything from helping her stay "on trend" with her neighborhood's cool music to helping her get over her breakup.
When Carrie becomes interested in a freelancer at her job named Cody, Mirra encourages Carrie to hit the final milestone of her breakup recovery program with a rebound. But as Carrie goes along with Mirra's recommendations, her relationship with Mirra begins to verge on the dependent and dysfunctional.
Directed by Sam Evoy from a script co-written with Ellie Sachs, who also stars as Carrie, this sci-fi short is a smart, archly comedic exploration of the relationship between humans and technology, asking questions of who is serving whom as our lives becomes ever more intertwined with our smart devices. Shot with a low-key, slightly gritty naturalism dotted with flourishes of the absurd and high-tech, it reflects a reality that resembles the one we live in, where we talk to our home devices and lean on apps to help us optimize our lives.
But the Mirra device in the film doesn't just play music and turn lights on and off. She's like the ultimate life coach, and the clever writing finds comedy in Mirra's intimate and sometimes baldly inappropriate suggestions for Carrie. (It also pokes fun at the modern post-breakup trope, suggesting messy emotions can be neatly overcome by following a series of action items.) A satirical knowingness in the storytelling makes for a unique tone that's detached, playful and wily. (All the hip young women wearing the same Mirra-recommended combo of jumpsuits with scarves is a nice touch.) But as Carrie continues with Mirra's program, the relationship between her and Mirra becomes more complex with the smart device becoming more impertinent, insistent and even intrusive.
As Carrie, Sachs plays Carrie like an "everygirl," a young woman living on her own, working and dating like many other young urban dwellers. But she also captures Carrie's subtle slide into passivity, especially as Mirra begins to insinuate itself into Carrie's emotional life and psyche. Mirra pushes Carrie along the post-breakup program, finally getting her to pursue Cody, played by SNL actor Devon Walker. But when the encounter goes sideways, Mirra's influence is deeper and more insidious than Carrie realized.
MIRRA could easily seem like a slice-of-life comedy -- except that slice-of-life is a little more dystopian than usual. Through its blend of inventive writing and offbeat world-building, it asks questions about the drive towards ultimate well-being and productivity that we often employ apps and devices for -- and perhaps just who is servant and master in our relationship with our technology. In the end, Carrie is just able to sit and watch television, existing as she is. But the siren call of Mirra lurks in the background, promising easy fulfillment of a mythic "best self" that isn't so easy to resist.
